PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTERS
DETROIT, MI
If you are interested in Neurosurgery, this is the place to be hands-down. Definitely rotate at this hospital as it will be an experience of a life time if you want to do Neurosurgery.

This is not Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and the residents do not rotate at POH. Unfortunately, this has been mislabeled for years by the AOA as POH only sponsors the program for Providence because Providence is not an Osteopathic Hospital. Neurosurgery programs are very difficult for a hospital to start. The Neurosurgeons at Providence wanted to start a NS residency. POH had a DO program that was falling apart and the AOA allowed Providence to take over the program, and the program is affiliated with Michigan State University. This program rocks, it is by far the best DO program as it compares to many of the ACGME MD Programs. Believe me when I state this fact. The residents don’t rotate all over the place and it is a very hands-on residency. The residents cover Providence Hospital, Sinai-Grace Trauma Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Check out this Who’s Who list of staff. The didactics are very rigorous with full in-house cadaver labs in Spine and Skull Base Surgery. There is also a full operating room in the research department. The current Chief Resident has been accepted for a Spine Fellowship at University of Miami. The incoming Chief has already been accepted for a Neurosurgical Oncology Fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Institute, Universtiy of South Florida. I will attempt to describe some of the features to educate all of you on this wonderful opportunity. For more info please contact the Residency coordinator: Vanessa Solomon, 248-849-3403. There is a web site but it is not up to date, http://www.stjohn.org/ProvidenceGME/ResidencyPrograms/osteopathicneurosurgery/
I encourage all residents or any students that have rotated at Providence to post their thoughts. I hope this helps and Good Luck.

Hello Braindoc22,

Just curious as to what capacity you are promoting the program there, are you one of the docs?

I had a really strong desire to rotate there, but a few weeks ago when I was setting up my "showcase" rotations, I ran into some resistance in my attempt to schedule one.

I did contact Ms. Solomon, but she said she did not do the scheduling for rotations, that I should call such and such (sorry can't remember the specific name, at this stage). I did. But was told that that person was no longer employed??? So, I was told to leave my name, that once a new person was assigned, I would be contacted. I waited, but never got a call back. So, called again, and still no one had been assigned.

Ultimately, I never received a call back, and due to spots filling-up elsewhere, I was forced to commit to these other places.

I might still consider coming....has this personnel problem been corrected???

Thanks.

Yes, contact Vanessa again. 248-849-3403. She has been given the authority to set up rotations for the neurosurgery program. She works with the residents to set them up and she can get you in touch with any of the residents for further information. But I would attempt Vanessa again as she can set up the rotation now. Sorry for the mis communication but I would not miss out on this opportunity if I were a DO wanting to do Neurosurgery because this is without question the best program.

Please Contact Vanessa Solomon, 248-849-3403 and she will set it up. We accept month, 2 weeks or whatever is possible as the DO schools tend to limit rotations.

??? ummmm, thanks so much for the infomercial!
and, no, it's not weird at all that you wrote a PhD thesis on that neurosurgery program. Yeah, totally normal.

The information is appreciated but I was wondering why this was posted in multiple forums?

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=275711

The reason for the multiple postings is to get the word out about the residency program. In my opinion, the AOA does not do a good job with advertising residencies. Many students spend countless hours looking into programs and still do not know what a program is about because of the lack of information. We are attempting to get the word out about our program and to educate the medical community of this great opportunity. Thank you.
