new special pay plan for general dentists

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why wouldn't you sign up for IP? Does that mean right now specialists don't have a bonus system?

Right now specialists are on the old system. The only reason I can think of to not sign up for IP is the obligation it gives you. You contract to serve for the entire year if getting IP (though they are trying to change that). For example, if you were getting out and had 9 months left, but your IP has just come up to sign back up for it, if you sign the paperwork and get the IP at that point, you now have obligated yourself for 12 months from that date. So if you have less than a year and are planning on getting out, don't sign up for IP unless you're good with staying in those extra months.

Has there been any updates on incentive pay for specialists? Is it IP for everyone?

Individuals still keep asking about the new consolidated pay program. Please understand that it will be at least as good as the current system in place, and possibly give a little more. It is not going to change the landscape and increase pay dramatically. Therefore whether it goes into affect this year or in 3 years...individuals shouldn't get so focused on it.

I have been told that the specialty pay plan will be implemented at least by FY 2017. It is back being looked at discussed by the 3 Services. It will not likely be this year.

Is there / will there be a difference in available bonuses for initial ADSO pay for someone coming out of school on HSCP/HPSP who does a credentialing tour and does not do a 1 yr AEGD vs someone who does?

Yes...if you do a one year, you can do what is called the Advanced Clinical Practice. After the one year, you show competency in several areas, then your bonus goes from 25k/year to 35k/year once your obligation is up.

@AirborneDentist Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, does that mean that for the years paying back for HPSP/HSCP, the person with AEGD and the person without are paid the same, but when they re-sign their retention bonuses are different?

So as it stands right now an HPSP dentist that just completed a 2 yr comp residency would have annual bonuses of $3,000 VSP+ $10,000 ASP + $2500 BCP= $15,500 annual bonus. While an HPSP general dentist fresh out of dental school would be making slightly more money at $20,000 IP/ year. Is this correct? Seems like the comp dentist should have a greater special pay.

I do understand that after the 4 year obligation is up, the comp dentist will be eligible to sign for 4 more years and receive a DOMRB of $50,000, while the General dentist would receive a DOMRB of $25,000.

When the new special pay plan kicks in in the future (the date keeps getting pushed back) it will even out. Until then it's not equal...until the comp dentist pays back his time and is eligible for the DOMRB. There have been variations with pay between specialists and general dentists for more than a decade. When I went through my specialty training, no resident received their ASP. Later it changed and now everyone gets it. There is always an evolution to things and it's usually for the better.

Again...look at the big picture. Within a few years after the residency you will more than make up for the $4500/yr that you missed out on. Remember it could have been worse...you could miss out on the ASP like a lot of dentists used to.

That was Very helpful, Thanks for the info! Do residents of all programs receive the 20k/yr IP?

Do you think the comp residency is extremely beneficial vs. AEGD when it comes to separating and entering the civilian world? I do understand that comp is beneficial in the mil because you are considered a specialist.

Any general dentist that has a valid dental license and has passed BOLC (or other Service equivalent basic course) is eligible for the $20k even when they start residency.

Yes I do believe the Comp program will make you a better dentist in private practice.

That's correct Vellnueve, but I interpreted his question as asking about residents who (at least in the Army) are not specialists until they graduate and specifically about the $20k HPOIP (combined VSP/DASP).

In the Army if you are a general dentist and have signed up for the HPOIP, you will continue to receive it during and even after residency until you submit a change in program request (which would normally occur when you are eligible for the higher DOMRB pay) at which time you would revert back to the legacy system mentioned by Vellnueve.
