just a question for those of you who have had experience in the new born nursery. i noticed on one of my med schl rotations that, soon after delivery, the babies are cleaned with some lotion-like soap rather than with running water, etc. maybe the also used something else, but i didnt see it. i know there are issues of needing to maintain the newborn's body temp especially so soon after birth, but im wondering if its really standard to not use much if any water on the baby's first bath. when the baby is at home, sponge baths are recommended to until the cord falls off, but i wonder how important this minimal water approach is on the first bath (where u're getting all the amniotic fluid and stuff off). have any of u seen any other alternatives to this?
