Hi,
While you're certainly welcome to hang around here, the overwhelming majority of people on this board are (pre-)medical (MD&DO) so we won't be able to answer specific questions about vet school. There is a pre-vet board (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forums/pre-veterinary.73/) where you can get better info on the specifics for pre-DVM.
On the "am I too old?" or "how to I get back into school-mode and do well?" questions though, there's lots of info here.
So 1) you're not too old, and 2) use the search function, there are lots of useful posts about how to study & do well in classes.
Don't worry about starting slow, do what you need to do to succeed. If that means easing in slowly, then so be it. Much better to get As in 2 classes, then get Bs in 3+ classes. Just work on figuring out how to get As for now, and build up the intensity as you go in.
