NY Med [ABC tv show]

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Kinda depends what you mean by "soft." When I was on gen surg none of the residents I worked with really seemed the stereotypical "surgeon," not even the chief. The neurosurgeons, on the other hand...

It's kind of like porn. I can't describe it, but I know it when I see it.

In all seriousness though, he just strikes me as the kind of person that complains a lot and likes attention, both of which are "soft" qualities that won't do you any favors in a surgical residency. At least until you're an attending, when those qualties become the essence of your personality :D.

In general surgery, all residents in their final year are "chief resident."

Only in non-surgical specialties is it something where you are selected because of how awesome you are. And it may not be how awesome you are so much as everyone else turns it down before you lol.

QFT

Also, even in those fields where there is a selection process for chief res, very often the best candidates want nothing to do with the job b/c it just means doing a **** ton more paperwork and dealing w/ a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense instead of seeing patients (aka making schedules, going to meetings, reviewing QA/QC standards, dealing w/ other resident’s personal/professional problems, etc..).

For this reason alone it generally doesn’t go to the best resident(s) in terms of knowledge or skills, but the biggest ass-kissers.

Will check out the show. Hope it beats Barney & Friends. ha ha:cool:

This has probably already been brought up but if you guys like NYMed, Boston Med, Hopkins, etc. you should check out the show "24 Hours in the ER." If you have xfinity you can get it on demand. Much less soap opera, more medicine.

Also I don't understand the bashing of that female surgeon on nymed. She gets her **** done. Who cares about her makeup and what shoes she wears???? Professionalism? She's a surgeon... IMHO, appearance matters about 0.001% in her job description and I think her patients would agree.

Agreed, yeah I was a fan of the surgeon also and liked her attitude.

Saw episode 5 last night, they focused much more on the ER and it was fun to watch. One of the er interns is switching to surgery, no Oz & Dr. Kato made an appearance again XD

Guarantee that her patients and her co-workers care. You'll see once you start training and interacting with patients more, professionalism is a huge deal. As our dean says, "if you want to be treated like a doctor, you need to act like one."

Point taken. I was just going off of the patients she saw in that episode, which were a homeless guy that got stabbed, and a guy who likes to eat screws for lunch, hah

It's a good show but I think in this week's episode. The nurses and doctors should have tended to the patient with chest pains. They were just sitting on there computers and the patient went into cardiac arrest. They should have checked out the patient before going on the computer.

Would they have been able to do anything if they had checked on her earlier? They said she probably died from a PE but they had given medicine for that prior

Well prior to her being in arrest she was moaning. So I do think they should have checked on her.I think if they checked on her. Her chances of living would be greater.

I wonder if anyone from the show is on these forums and reads this thread?! Hell, they could even be posting in here! Crazy!!!

Classic boy-that-cried-wolf situation. Tough call to give a known drug seeker TPA when they have a history of faking pain to get narcotics.

Well, I tried posting a picture of scumbag steve that said:

Yeah they probably make snarky comments about her behind her back.

They would be able to do a hell of a lot more in the room rather than gossiping at the computers

you have all the info you need to properly hit on those nurses now if you stay there for residency you lucky dog

It's pretty hard to tell cuz they weren't really showing the girl. She might not have looked like she was about to crump, and then all of a sudden she just did. Moaning is not really a good sign of how critically ill you are; in fact, if you're able to moan it kind of makes it a little less likely you are right at death's door.

I thought episode 6 was the best one so far. It had the tragedy of the downward spiral of the alcoholic homeless woman, the young woman getting the lung transplant and then learning to surf, relationship drama (for those who like that), and lots of little vignettes that were good. Packed with good stuff for a TV show.

yay for fake television. The show picks patients that "seem interesting" (i feel bad for that lung transplant patient they followed, I hope ABC at least paid them some money for plastering her condition over national televsion) and they do not cover all of the daily routines for ER doctors (charting, calls, DDx...). Why are they showing the personal lives of the nurses? And of course they pick the most annoying people to follow (that one busty latino (?) nurse for example). I think she was in some sort of love triangle and she ended up going back to her ex-bf or something like that (it was honestly something I would expect on MTV). To top it all off, she is a "party girl." She looks like she is in her mid 30s and she is still going out to clubs and dressing up in a lascivious way? REALLY? grow up please, k thanks.

The show is called NY MED, not NY's personal life of nurses and various doctors. yay for junk television and I regret wasting my time watching this. gj ABC!

Anybody else agree?

Haha calm down. It IS television show. They show the exciting people because no one wants to watch the stupid and lame ones. The idea is to show the exciting stuff to make a good television series. No one wants to watch a show with a doc dictating his notes....

You have to realize that ordinary people are interested in relationships, drama, human interest stories (like the transplants)... and not really interested in medicine. The show wasn't made for medical students.

I find it interesting how med students really don't understand normal human beings. Love triangles, in general, are very interesting to women. There are tons of movies/books that prove that.

The same old formula is boring though. This is just like Boston Med but with sassier nurses and less-baller surgeons. Sure, people will have cheap interest in behind the scenes drama/love triangles/transplants, but that just makes the show mediocre. "Doctors' Diaries" was able to make the most mundane aspects of their lives interesting, and everyone would win if the [insert city name here] Med shows just tried a little harder.

But whadaya gonna do, it's kinda stupid to complain about network television. This show is pretty par for the course.

This.

The reality is, that the love triangles ARE the realistics parts of the shows. Think of your med school classmates who have relationship drama, or baby daddy drama, etc.

agreed. The formula for the show is 1.) show a few nurses and their lives and 2.) get a patient or two and talk about just their surgery. I felt previous seasons focused more on the patient's story which I think would be more interesting even for the typical person watching the show as they can relate more to the patient than the health care provider. That is not to say they can't have some of this silly nurse love stuff in there. However showing real people with real problems is what the show is advertising itself to be and I just don't get that feeling when watching.

Just watched the last two episodes. If they show the hot ER nurse one more time I am going to stop watching this show. Just terrible.

Hey I like looking at her. Sure her personality makes me want to vomit (goes to miami knowing she doesn't like the guy and then dumps him straight afterwards), but she looks good... I like the other ED nurse much better (the younger, more down to earth one).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

And a thought on the CF patient. I really feel they dropped the ball on this case. Lung transplants as we all know have a low success rate. The story would be far more real if they delved into the patient's story more. What are her feelings regarding the 50% five year survival? Where are all the other doctors (that surgeon probably only saw her in clinic one time before the transplant and that was likely 8 months before she got the lungs). I'm not asking for 20 minutes of a clinic visit with the pulmonologist but why not even interview the guy?

I don't blame the producers of the show. They don't have any medical knowledge. But they need to hire better medical advisers. The cases are there, but the content shown simply is not. Now this could be due to legal issues and what kind of freedom they were given at this hospital versus the Boston hospitals, but the drop in quality from boston med to this season is pretty drastic in my opinion. And if as others have said it is because they just try to show simple stupid stuff (5 minutes of the fellow pulling a drain????) to satisfy the dumb masses then I'm surprised because I'd expect slightly more from an ABC documentary type show.

I thought the "hot" ER nurse is too hard looking. Though, not bad at the beach. Why do they focus so much on her? Her personal life seems like a mess lol. Going on an elaborate trip with a guy and then wishing she was with some other guy who apparently doesn't "know what he wants".

The "hot" RN is an example of the type of women you should stay away from at all costs. Nothing but problems.

Yep all the nurses are so arrogant it blows my mind away. I don't even know why I watch Ny Med. Hopkins and Boston were way better.

Pretty accurate depiction of women in NYC. And of most people here in general. Psychotic, arrogant, neurotic, hedonistic, narcissistic, weird and distrusting. On the bright side, people walk faster and get stuff done.

Think about it this way. Why do people want to move to NYC? We don't have the best medical programs in America, we don't have the best artists in America, we don't have the best lawyers in America. We do however have the best finance scumbags. Plus people want to feel excitement and want to live in "the center of the universe" as some people like to say. So a lot of douchebags come here and the personalities are contagious over time. However, there are a minority of good people here. A very small minority that mostly isolates itself from most of the public.

Finally something we can agree on, only I'd throw Boston into this rant too. The big northeastern cities are way over-rated, I personally couldn't wait to get out of Boston/NYC. In my experience, the people who idolize those cities either a) grew up there and have never lived anywhere else or b) have never lived in a major city and confuse the perks as being exclusive to NYC/Boston.

Yes, I'm there right now. To be fair it is also somewhat of a city of immigrants. A kind of proving ground to see if you can make it out.

She has an amazing body, but I agree that she has this hard look to her face. I wish the show stopped going on and on about her sex life.

I had 3 patients in clinic today ask about Dr Oz quackery. This guy's holistic crap has officially spilled over into my training, wtf.

does anybody have/know links for hopkins 24/7 streams?

^^ This

" Hopkins 24/7 " NOT "Hopkins" anyone ? the one which aired in 2000 and was the first of this series.

haven't been able to find a dvd/stream anywhere

Do you mind sharing the things they asked about?

I don't have time for TV but I like watching these shows as it reminds me what I strive for.

"Is it true that green onions help lower my blood pressure? I heard that from dr oz and was wondering if maybe I can stop taking my meds eventually"

"Dr oz says you should take iron pills and metamucil" - person with no history of anemia or constipation

"Dr oz said one time that bottled water is dirtier than tap water, so I don't drink either. When I need water, I boil it first." -Person with kidney stones who should clearly be drinking more water.

BTW: After watching a more recent Oz (the kind that focused on homeopathy ect.) I lamented about it to my uncle. I just mentioned that I thought it was odd he was embracing eastern medicine and old theories that have been debunked. My uncle responded: "No need to be jealous just because he's figured out a way to make money in medicine". As our convo went on he seemed to think that Oz was sort of the whistle blower in medicine and was doing a public service... other physicians were upset with him because he is giving away trade secrets and is rewarded well. I wonder how many people view Oz in this way who are not in the medical field.

Does anyone know if there is a way to watch this show outside the US? ABC won't let me watch this online outside the US and it hasn't been posted on youtube like Boston Med or Hopkins.

How have you not heard of torrents before?

I really like the show. The doctor that gets married looks like a total D-bag. Why do we need to see what kinda car he's driving?
