Kinda depends what you mean by "soft." When I was on gen surg none of the residents I worked with really seemed the stereotypical "surgeon," not even the chief. The neurosurgeons, on the other hand...
It's kind of like porn. I can't describe it, but I know it when I see it.
In all seriousness though, he just strikes me as the kind of person that complains a lot and likes attention, both of which are "soft" qualities that won't do you any favors in a surgical residency. At least until you're an attending, when those qualties become the essence of your personality .
