I received the same email! No idea how to interpret it..

I'd like to think that they have considered our applications but have not decided our fate yet..

For people who are interested in nephrology there is good news and bad news.
The good news is the applicant this year 2012 is 60 percent less and all program are worried if they can fill all the position and the reason and the bad news is the future for nephrology job is the lowest with expected salary way less than hospitalist around 120k-140k with long hours of work which most after finishing nephrology are going back to hospitalsit.for those applying in nephrology please now this fact and currently I am doing Nephro fellowship and very disappointing .

that's a normal trend for most subspecialties....demand, salary and competetion takes turn, GI was once the least desired fellowship but changed overtime with changes in guidelines and CMS rules. I think you should not worry about salary now as long you have a strong passion for what you choose...

I agree. I think they like our application by they are behind in scheduling. They might let us when the dates are available.

Just got one more IV from temple.

Thank you for posting your experience! I have not started interviewing myself but have thought about a question for a while. Of the interview itineraries I have seen, it appears that we are going to have 6-9 interviews a day which is way more than residency interviews. Did you have that many during your two interview days? Was it exhausting?
Also, on average how many candidates are they interviewing in a day?

the two program i went to 1st one had 5 interviewer and 2nd one has 4. I was told by other interviewees that it is normal for fellowship. I guess the norm is 5 to 6? To me it is a bit exhausting since there are so many chances for you to mess up (5 - 6 times) during the interview. However the best part is that the conversation is not as intense since most of time are just general questions.

Both interviews i had were a total of 4 candidates each time.

Medscape Nephrologist Compensation Report: 2012 Results

The question here isn't much about the prospective compensation for the nephrologists, it is about what current ground realities are...

Nephrology is definitely a very interesting field, and intrigues those who love it....

Current situation is that, not many "Residents" are applying for the Nephrology Fellowship, for one reason or the other (let's not go into the details here for that)...

The program directors are also worried that the J1 Visa pool of candidates who would apply for Nephrology, has also decreased lately (i am not sure what the exact reason is)....

So currently there is a very limited pool of potential candidates who have applied for the Nephrology Fellowship and PD's would have to select from that pool.

In my Nephrology program (which takes 3 candidates every year) only 100 applications were recieved (while more then 50% were from the working Hospitalists/Internists)....

I agree with Nepsap here, the situation is a bit disappointing, but if you love Nephrology then you have a great chance of getting it this year and that too in a good program of your liking. Good Luck all.

Thanks for your comments...I thought 100 applicants for 3 positions is more than enough for PD to recruit from...not sure what is the typical appl/position ratios?

Being a fellow, do u think PDs prefers residents over hospitalist/internist?
Thanks in advance for your reply..
