Rejections without interview (8):
-Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (AZ)
-Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona (MWU)
-Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois (MWU-IL)
-University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry (UCSF)
-Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLU)
-University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine (UNLV)
-Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry (MEH)
-Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine (WESTNU)

STATS:
oGPA-3.35
sGPA-3.12
DAT (aa, ts, pat, reading, lowerthan 16)
19, 19, 17, 20, No
Mailout Date: 8/28/15 (application)
10/09/15 (DAT Score)
Bachelor's Degree from Cal Poly
CA resident
RDA licensed and working as an orthodontic assistant/treatment coordinator for 1.5 years

Currently waiting to here back for an interview from 9 schools :dead:. Should I start looking into investing in a post baccalaureate to raise my GPA?

I think retaking the DAT would help you more, and be more time/cost efficient, than doing postbac. Just my opinion. If you can get a 21 or 22 I think think that you'll be in good shape for next cycle. Also, don't give up hope for this cycle yet!

I agree with retaking the DAT, but I'd also get your application out in June. I think a mid-Oct date with your stats was just way too late. AZ, for example, started sending out interview invites in July.

Rejection #1: Western University (expected, never completed secondary, obviously w/o interview)
Notification date: 2/13/16
Method of notification: checked AADSAS portal update
Residency: SC
AADSAS mail-out date: 10/2/15
Application complete date: 8/26/15
GPA (science, overall) 3.18, 2.97
DAT (AA/TS/PAT/Reading/any section below a 17): 21/21/28/23/no

Interview #1: MUSC, 11/20/15 (top choice)
Still waiting to hear back. Has anyone else been accepted/declined/rejected??

Nothing yet from BU or Univ of the Pacific, portal status still reads, "Received/Under Review" for both.

Non traditional applicant.

Does anyone know if BU or UoPacific notifies of rejection/interviews in other ways besides Portal updates? Are they even still doing interviews?

UOP sends an email when your file is under active and "Invitations to interview at University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry are extended by telephone."

Haven't heard anything either :/

Figured I'd chime in on other schools i'm waiting on.

Temple, BU, Maryland, and Pittsburgh (was "denied" from Pitt in November and then "un-denied" through AADSAS 3 days later?) but have heard Pitt is done.

Will be attending University of Minnesota.

If you don't mind me asking, how many shadowing and volunteering hours do you have? I have basically the same stats as you and haven't heard anything from the University of Minnesota (I'm also a Minnesota resident). Maybe I just bombed my interview, since it was my first dental school interview. Also, I'm waitlisted at Iowa and Wisconsin as well.

Shadowing - 100+ at a few general and one oral surgeon.
Volunteer - don't remember exact but 750-1000 hrs. Spent time at food shelve quite a bit, president of group at university that raised $30,000+ for conservation, church, programs through university for youth etc...

I also have 1000+ hours working with at-risk youth in northern Minnesota in and around a few reservations and in the twin cities area. My experiences with the youth really helped with my interview as I had a lot of examples for various questions.

Yes, fortunately I was accepted to Maryland and NYU and put my deposit down at NYU :)

Why nyu over Maryland?

I'm just curious to hear what you considered, or the points of consideration, when you decided?

Both schools had great programs. For me, I felt a lot safer in NYC than Baltimore.

I had a similar choice between Rutgers and nyu and I chose Rutgers for the price difference and smaller class, unless Columbia accepts me, I will be going to Rutgers , which isn't in a great neighborhood either, deff consider as the above poster mentioned the price , because 100k is a lot, and with interest it's even more

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I interviewed at Maryland but I didn't apply to nyu. However, I know a lot about nyu dental school because I used to have a roommate that went there when I lived in NYC for a short period of time.

If you are a female I would say that is a huge point to consider and I couldn't agree with you more.

I'm happy for you! Good job getting in!

I'm a male, and I'm from Los Angeles- so, I don't mind a dangerous area at all if It can save me some money.

The trick is to walk fast like you are in a hurry when in bad areas, be alert, pay attention, and whatever you do don't walk around with your cellphone out and your head down. You're asking for trouble when you do that.

I'm a strong believer of going to the cheapest school, choose Maryland and avoid schools that are 500K like NYU, MWU, and USC at all costs

Not safer for your wallet or future in the long run. I don't mean to be rude and the choice is yours in the end, I can't decide for you but with that price difference I would really, really reconsider that. Please don't let the perceived safety threat of attending Maryland cost you tens of thousands (possibly over $100,000) dollars. I'm sure the school has some sort of escort/security service to walk you back from the library late at night. If you're smart and don't travel alone at night I'm sure that you will be fine. I would bother to write this post unless I really wanted you to think long and hard about this. It's no skin off my back if you end up spending all that extra money, but it just concerns me and I'm trying to look out for a future peer.

Good luck in dental school wherever you decide to enroll.

I hope you already looked into this, but doing some very quick, loose math without considering health insurance or living expenses at all, as well as ignoring tuition increases that will inevitably happen, the four year billed total at NYU is 320K (again, this does not include the drastically higher cost of living compared to Maryland), OOS Maryland 288K, IS Maryland 180K.

I'm sure I missed nickels and dimes here and there because I was rounding but the moral of the story is that without taking into account the cost of living discrepancy which is HUGE you'll be $32K pre-interest behind as an OOS student. I haven't really looked into cost of living that much and I know some schools overshoot their budgets, but NYU looks like it'll be $30K per year even if you go at least $4k per year under what they tell you to budget for. I cannot imagine Baltimore being $20K per year (I think this is too high for that area), but assuming it is you're $72K pre-interest in the hole by attending NYU over OOS Maryland. After interest, by the time you're done paying this back, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a $120,000 dollar decision, i.e. a 20% down payment on a $600,000 home...

Please don't tell me you're a Maryland resident because I literally might have a stroke sitting here at this desk.

I agree with you, I think it would save you 200k after accounting for the in-school interest that accrues and the instate tuition you could gain at Maryland.

Saving this money would have a huge impact on your living situation and life after graduating.

But, we never knew, maybe the poster doesn't even need to borrow loans lol
