Official 2016-2017 Endocrinology Fellowship Application Cycle

Statistics for 2015: 271 positions and 342 applicants ( 71 unmatched). Total number of programs 133 - my own calculation. 2.6 position per program.

This is my question, if number of position is increasing by 5% every year, number of applicants decreasing by 15%, why number of people who did not match still equal 68-71. Are those candidates also applying for different fellowships and therefore system marking them as unmatched?

Stats from last 2 years suggest that we have positive trend for applicants for endocrinology fellowship. So this is not over because many programs will not filled their position by first round by being super picky about candidates and not adjust for current national trends.

Can you post how many programs did you apply? This will help PD to realize current situation with electronic application and national trends.
This is what I think:
1. everyone is applying everywhere (partly becouse it is very easy with my eras)
2. good candidates are good and will be good for all programs
3. applicants applying for other more competitive fellowships and keeping endo as second choice

I was wondering if anyone knew a good website to read people's experiences about endocrinology fellowship interviews? Also what types of questions to expect on interview day?

See the trends at http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Results-and-Data-SMS-2016_Final.pdf page 35. Match rate went up from 2012-2014 and has been stable since then. No further decrease in applicants as far as I know.

Fellowship interviews are very laidback, even more so than residency. Generally, have a good answer for "why endo?", "what do you envision yourself doing in 5/10 years?" You'll pretty much be guaranteed those questions. Be able to talk in detail about everything you list on your CV (research projects, volunteer work, etc.)

Other than that, I found that many interviews turn into the interviewer selling me about the program

Spoke with one university whose program fellowship coordinator told me I wasn't offered a position due to my low step scores of at least 230. Didn't realize those things would come back to haunt me still. Not great for those of us that have graduated a while ago, but thankful for the offers that have come.

No one has heard from Chicago schools yet? Seems that they would have done so already.

scores actually play a huge role in rank order too. we would think that USMLE scores wouldnt be an issue once u start residency but guess not. Big name programs take residents from big name residencies coz they usually have higher score than their counterparts in community programs

Yes and No. Scores play a role, when in your CV there is nothing interesting with respect to your specialty. How otherwise differentiate candidates? If you have 30 candidate with almost identical CV , you will look for scores to give objective measurement.

since there is no such school, it would be hard to get info on that...

however there is an Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS)...the program recently increased to 3 fellows a year and has a strong emphasis on DM (with the Strelitz Diabetes Center being part of EVMS) and Dr. Vinik being part of the faculty you will get great neuroendocrine exposure...

(am an EVMS alumna...if you are going to interview there, you should at least get the name right...)

I don't think anyone should give up hope. Last year around this time others got interviews as part of the second wave.

And I just heard from icahn mount Sinai/st Luke's-Roosevelt medical center.

I think we will see a second wave, it's mid September, keep up the spirit, and email program coordinators/pds. You may be placed on a list that will be considered after cancellations, but don't lose hope.

Need your advice about number of interviews to attend.
If applicant participating as a couple match (endocrine and nephrology) what would be the least number of interviews to attend to be on safe side.
we have around 9 interviews in same programs but wont be able to afford the travel expenses. do you think interviewing at 6 only out of 10 programs is safe?

In my opinion does not make sense to go for so many programs. Anyway endo is not so competitive (1.2 match rate) and after 3-4 IVs you should be able to match, with couple match probably you will need 5 to 6 IVs.

9/12 - Just heard from Boston university - but they only had one date available (sep 30th) to interview. my assumption is they sent out their first wave, and this was part of the second wave? Is it worth going? Did anyone else heard back from BU earlier than this? I have an interview at Tufts that day, wondering if it's worth rearranging for something that was part of the second wave, vs. a school that wanted me on their first review??

Tough to say... sounds like you're interested in the Boston area so I would try to go to both if possible. Maybe see if Tufts has alternate dates?

I matched into a program that invited me on their second wave, and it ended up being a fantastic program that was a great fit for me. So as long as they invited you to interview, no matter first or second wave, they're interested in you and think that you have what it takes to succeed in their program

depends on your background for endo...nephro is wide open so i wouldn't worry so much about that (the likelihood of there being an unmatched spot at where ever the endo person matches is pretty high).
 
are people going to email their #1 program letting them know? if so when are you going to do it?
 
Can we conclude that the program director like us and want to rank us high based on his reply to thank you letter or shall we do not read much into it . Some PD replied with neutral email , does this mean they wont rank us high?
any input from last year applicants.

Well, I matched in a program where PD didn't reply to my Thank u email :) . I thought in fellowship they are more open about showing interest since the number of applicants in much less.

This is updated list. I received rejection from Duke today. They did not invite me because they worry about cost of the travel for candidates and time of their faculty :)

If anybody would like to add to our list, so can used for next year and include programs and invitation or rejection, please do it.

To my knowledge all programs across all Medical Subspecialities have to be "all-in," or "all-out," of the match (this is the first year)..Someone feel free to chime in though.
 
University at Buffalo has 6 spots this year, 4 spots will be prematch, and the other 2 will be through the match.
 
Which program do u guys think is better: Baylor or NIH?

My criteria is ranking the programs according what I liked the most and a lil about my possibilities matching there.

No idea about Case Western
