What does it mean if a single arm study reaches it primary endpoint which is overall survival?
Thanks
It means that they met their pre-specified primary endpoint. It likely has nothing to do with efficacy or actual clinical activity.

Also, why are you asking this in the fellowship app cycle thread?

Hey guys,

What would be a good time to request letter writers to make calls? (calls to put in a good word or solicit interviews)

If now is the appropriate time, then how longer can we wait before requesting attendings to make calls?

Would appreciate any suggestion from the veterans. Thanks.

Calls about what?

Calls to put in a good word or solicit interviews (I edited my post to include this)

Thank you gutonc
Good word about what?

If you have to get somebody to help you get an interview, are you sure you want to spend your time/money on that interview?

Thanks gutonc.

I am a FMG. I have been seeing people with less competitive profiles get interviews at better programs just because they don't have visa issues.
So I would spend the money and go to any interview from good programs if I can get it.

Would truly appreciate your thoughts regarding my initial question of timing for calls.

Visa issues are a red flag at the fellowship level. My mid-tier program gets plenty of apps so won't even bother interviewing anyone who needs a visa, regardless of how good the rest of their app is. I assume we're not alone.

As to your question, there's no real answer to it. Ask now, in a week, in a month, whatever. You've g0t nothing to lose.

Hi Knockoutmice,
I am also a FMG. How many ivs did you get so far? I got 4. I did not ask anyone to call programs and I am not planning to. Unless it's someone well known to the PD I think it's unless.

Looks like today is a dry day!

According to last year's thread, Aug 25 was the busiest day of the season. Hoping we will have some activity tomorrow...

@gutonc If someone recommends and we get an Interview, what is the problem with that? Are you saying there is no chance of matching with that kind of interview?

Chimed: Just curious, Do you need visa? UCSD does not sponsor J1 or H1 but your post indicated that you need visa?

Can only interview at 3 of 5 places:

U of C
UTSW
Utah
Pittsburgh
UCLA

How would you rank them based on overall reputation for heme/onc?

Can anyone comment on the cost of living in California as a resident/fellow? I was fortunate enough to get some bites out west but a cost of living calculator tells me I'd need to nearly double my salary to maintain same lifestyle as I do in my current city. We all know fellows don't make much and moonlighting is likely unrealistic (at least the first year).

Has anyone moved out west for residency or fellowship and run into this? Is it worth it? What have you had to sacrifice?

This is for GutOnc,
US Citizen - AMG here, state schools for undergrad, med school, and residency (academic center with large research component).
Initially thought I was going into pulm/crit did 2 years of research prior to medical school in the field with 5 publications.
Step 1: 236, Step 2: 240, Step 3: 219.
Realized that I really liked Heme/Onc but wanted to take a year off and work as an onc hospitalist while doing research during my off weeks in malignant heme. Using this year to sort out whether I want to be in academics vs private practice (I do enjoy teaching and research). I did well on my inpatient/outpatient Heme/Onc rotations and was told by the faculty that I would get strong letters if I ever thought about applying.
What are my chances of landing a fellowship position at one of these places: Emory, Moffitt, Duke, UNC, or Vandy (these are my reaches)
I'm also looking at applying to the state university programs in the area as well.
How much of a regional bias is there for fellowship? I was thinking about applying in Oregon/Washington/Colorado/Texas but wasn't sure if they'd consider my application.

Which C and what do you want to do with your life?

University of Chicago

Im thinking academic clinic GI oncology. But Im open to changing my mind.

Also really enjoyed my BMT month last year.

If it were me?
UofC, Utah (very strong GI dept) and Pitt.

Could easily make a strong case for UTSW as well but my hatred of Texas is well documented here (and irrelevant to your decision making).

Please continue to post your invitations :)
(Will update the list later. Using my cellphone now).

Does anyone know of any comparison lists ranking hematology/oncology fellowships? I'm trying to narrow down where I'm actually going to interview at but was having trouble deciding which interviews to cancel. I could find a US News Report of the top 50 cancer centers but other than that nothing to rank fellowship programs. The ones I'm looking at canceling are not in the top 50.

There are no such lists, so don't bother looking (remote internet throat punch to the first person who suggests Doximity).

Post the following:
Programs where you're definitely interviewing
Programs you're trying to decide on
Basic WAMC stats
What you want to be when you grow up

I'll try to help out. Don't PM me. Share with the class or keep it in your backpack.

Hi Everyone, I have conflict of dates and need to choose between MCW and UC Irvine and I am not sure if there is any major difference between both programs. I am interested in malignant heme and am looking for a career in academics. Which one of these 2 programs would help me reach my goal? I need to cancel one of them and don't know which one I should go to. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

Anybody heard from Mayo Rochester and MSKCC yet?

The ones I'm looking at canceling are not in the top 50.

if they're all in that non-top 50 category then cancel the ones that would cost you more money to go to

For those of you who will be interviewed at NIH, can I swap interview date (mine is 9/30) with someone? I would be really appreciative.

Still haven't found NIH interview switch. Looking for someone to help me.

Here's a little something to make you all feel better about your upcoming interviews RIGHT NOW.

--- --- ---

So today was my first interview and I was a little jittery because I hadn't slept well and had (maybe) too much coffee.

The first interviewer I had today -- her name hadn't been written down anywhere. Nowhere - not on any itinerary or anything.

I wasn't introduced to her ahead of time. I just had to walk in and meet her and have my interview.

Unfortunately, I didn't catch what she said her last name was...she sort of mumbled it and then started talking really fast and asking lots of questions that I tried to keep up with.

And so I kept staring at her white coat which just said "[Jill]*" but then her last name was all folded over.

I finished the interview without needing to know her last name (so I thought I was in the clear).

I breathe a sigh of relief and get out of the office only to be ushered in to my next interview.

And the first question the next interviewer asks is "So who did you have your previous interview with?"

And I freeze.

I'm about to look like an idiot because I don't know this lady's last name.

So I took a chance and said, "I might mispronounce the last name, but her first name is [Jill]"

And he looks at me for just a moment, confused.

And THEN he looks at me in surprise and says "[Jill] Howard?"

Yes, yes, it was [Jill] Howard.

With the unpronounceable last name "Howard", apparently.

So yeah, I looked like an idiot.

--- --- ---

The moral of the story is don't be afraid to just ask your interviewer if you didn't catch their last name.
