*****Official General Surgery Interview Invite/Rejection Thread 2012-2013*****

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One option would be to reach out to the program director at your home program, explain your situation, and see if he/she can shed some light on the situation. However, that may reduce your chances at your home program, and it won't really change anything, so I think I would focus on doing really well with the interviews you get.

If November 1st comes and goes, and your invites are still not rolling in, then it's time to start asking for preliminary positions.

Unfortunately, I didn't apply to the home school because I want to leave the area. So they do not have access to my LOR either. I just received my Step 2 CK score this week and not sure if I should submit it to schools or not. I received a 234 while the national avg is 237 and US grad gen surgery match is 238. Step 1 score 230. Any advice?

All of my info is indeed uploaded to ADTS. According to this list, 13 programs I applied to haven't given out interviews yet.

I would go ahead and apply to your home program now. Talk to the program director once they have downloaded your app. It's busy season for them, so be understanding and quick with your requests. They may blow you off, but you may instead gather some important information from them.

I would submit your step 2 score immediately. It's perfectly fine, and it is an improvement from your step 1. The only thing that truly hurts is a LOWER step 2. Also, some programs will not interview or rank you without a step 2.

I would also consider applying to more programs now, especially ones that haven't offered interviews yet. It may be fruitless, but if it works, it will help you in several ways: More practice interviewing, more chances to match, etc. Include "safe" programs in your new application.

I know that geography is important, and factored into your decision to not apply to your home program, but most experienced people will tell you that a categorical position in an undesirable location is still better than a prelim position. That is, of course, assuming that the categorical position will give you what you need to become a board-certified surgeon.

Feel free to PM me if you want any specific advice on which programs to apply to next.

I don't know about other places, but at my institution, it is a BIG smack in the face if you don't apply to your home program. These surgeons invested time into you only for you to tell them you won't even consider their program....even if it's the truth, it's one of those times where it's just more polite to pretend...

you should apply to preliminary spot. It does not cost you any more if you are applying to the same program for a categorical spot. If you don't want a prelim spot then you don't have to rank it and wait for the SOAP.

Does anyone know if Univ of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital is univ-affiliated community hospital or U of Miami's main university program?

Miami is their main one. Their community affiliated one is Palm Beach Regional Campus, which is a really new program. http://www.umpbc.com/?page=mainPageContent&title=Home&S=3
(Unless I am wrong, in which case someone please correct me!)

FREIDA does not indicate whether it's univ-based or univ-affiliated but when I did search through univ-based filter, it wasn't included. Then, I searched with univ-affiliated community hospital filter, and Jackson Memorial showed up on the list. However, it appears that Jackson's ortho, neuro and ENT are all univ-based (through U of Miami) so I don't know if this is an error from FREIDA or real. Still not sure..

Would you please list small community programs - I'm considering adding a few to the list of schools I applied to.

Gluck everyone.

What's your home institution? You have the highest chance of matching there. I'd favor that angle.

It looks like surgery is pretty competitive this year, I've interviewed at 2 community programs thus far and most of the applicants interviewing with me have been from well respected and top US medical schools. This hints to me that even smaller programs have no shortage of well qualified applicants and that this is probably a buyers market. I was expecting to see some IMGs at those institutions but I have yet to see one.

I say this not to discourage anyone, but on the contrary, I hope this helps future applicants (US or IMG) understand that they must apply to a significant amount of programs to assure enough interviews. Some schools are still advising applying to no more than 30 programs, this number may be a little low unless you are a really stellar applicant.

Hey guys -- I am a Caribbean grad with step 1 227/98 and step 2 231, Cs passed -- all usmles passed on first try. I honored all rotations and am published in the journal of nuclear medicine and had a poster presentation. I have strong lors as well.

I am looking to apply to more prelim surgery programs that take applicants with my stats. Which programs do you suggest ?

Thanks

I am curious as to how many interviews people have gotten so far...also what is your goal for # of interviews? I have 10 so far and was hoping for 15 or so.

I am curious as to how many interviews people have gotten so far...also what is your goal for # of interviews? I have 10 so far and was hoping for 15 or so.

Currently I've been on 2 interviews and have 17 more scheduled. I'll probably go on them all as they are all programs with which I'm really happy- a mix of university and communiversity programs. Mid level applicant at non-prestigious mid-southern med school. Our faculty has been fairly progressive about pushing applicants this year to apply to 40-60 programs if possible and to try and secure at least 15 interviews if possible.

PM if anyone needs specifics

Best of luck to everyone in this ongoing process

Applied to 39, invited to 25 so far.

Rejected from 1 (Columbia), haven't heard from the other 13 (5 of them I see on here have sent interviews--Wash U, Michigan, Vandy, UCLA, and UCSF).

My goal was to be able to rank 10-15.

Hope this helps.

***Also should mention I'm couples matching and my mentors mentioned I needed to apply to as many as possible to maximize my chance of matching as a couple. They also mentioned that some programs won't consider you if they see you are couples matching as they feel it's more difficult to deal with when there are plenty of exceptional candidates who don't have the extra hassle of couples matching--which for programs may potentially mean they would need to go deeper into their rank list if one 1/2 of the couple blows and can't get a spot in that city. Odd, but true.***

NRMP matching outcomes from last year showed that ranking 11 or higher gave one about a 90% or greater chance of matching, so it looks like you can sleep soundly with your 10 interviews, no worries.

Applied to 39, 17 interviews, 4 rejections, declined 3, going to 14 interviews for now (may cancel 1). Still haven't heard from 18 programs..First interview starts soon.

Thanks for all the replies.

I should clarify my comment—I wasn't complaining about 10 interviews, just stating my goals and was curious about others. I applied to only academic programs. 33 total. Received 10 interviews, 4 rejections, and haven't heard from the rest.

Baystate just canceled their Tuesday Oct. 30th interview date due to hurricane Sandy. They will be adding more in the future.
