I bet that you get a spot at one of those schools this cycle.

There may not be scholarships available at this point. It depends year to year as to what is available when. Many of the schools are very clear on what students will get entering scholarships. The easiest way to get answers is to call up admissions and ask if you qualify and if there is any money left.

1. Barry, AZPod, CPMS, Des Moines, NYCPM, WUCPM, SCPM, pretty much all of them this upcoming cycle.
2. cGPA: 3.15-3.2 range, sGPA: 3.0-3.1 range (Yay Calc 2), Non-sGPA: 3.52
(I'm in my final semester with 13 science credits, I included these projected grades in my GPA calculation, gave myself a little lower than projected to account for error)
3. MCAT Score: 26
4. Podiatry Experience: None yet, however I know some DPMs I can shadow prior to applying
5. Non-Podiatry Shadowing/Clinical Experience: 30 hours MD (Cardio)
6. Volunteering: I am going back to volunteer at an assisted living home I worked at in HS, this summer, so probably 50-100 hours.

I am currently applying to work in a hospital/doctor's offices during my gap year as well. sGPA is getting killed by Calc 2, which I stupidly took and dropped my sGPA by 0.1 points.

Is there a reason why you're waiting a year to apply? You can probably apply now and get in this cycle.

Still waiting on my LoRs, and I haven't shadowed a DPM yet, I've only spoken to them. Plus my ECs will be coming this summer.

ECs don't matter. Start shadowing now and apply right away. You have a very good chance of getting in this cycle. Of course, that's if you don't want to. In that case then wait a year. Either way, you have a very good chance of getting in somewhere in both this cycle and next cycle. Best of luck.

Have been interested in Podiatry since before I even started undergrad. Anyway I'm all done with college in May. Podiatry application is submitted and varified as of yesterday. Just waiting on the committee letter.

Pod shadowing (no LOR)
Great EC's, Work as medical scribe, Shadowing, Research

Submitted at NYCPM however I believe their lowest accepted is 19. I will add more to my list today starting with Barry. What other schools should I apply to?
What are my chances?

I would apply to as many as you can afford. It is getting a bit late in the cycle and your stats are not stellar. Call the smaller schools first and see if they still have seats left so you don't waste money submitting an application if there aren't any seats left. Best of luck to you.

Thanks, I just submitted to Barry, Scholl, and Kent. Will call CSPM tomorrow to check on whether or not they have any seats left.

I was admitted to CSPM in January. Admissions informed me that they have filled 97% of their 48 seats. I got this information early last week. There are roughly 2 seats left for this academic year. Good luck in the admissions process.

Organic Chemistry 1: B
Organic Chemistry 2: A- (retook after C+)
Organic Chemistry 3: B (retook after C)

ECs:
-2 years of hospital volunteering
-60 hours of shadowing physicians (MD / DO)
-Spending a year teaching abroad in Taiwan as well as volunteering
-40-50 hours of non-clinical volunteering
-Worked as an assistant chemistry teaching lab preperator for a year
*** I also intend on shadowing a DPM in the future ***

Generally, I've been in the precarious position of having a roller coaster grade trend. I understand this looks very bad, and I'm very, very concerned about it. Here are my biggest problems with my transcript:

1. Inconsistent grade trend (as stated above)
2. 3 W's, 2 from the same course (Diff Eq). Ended up passing with a B.
3. 2 P/NP (non science courses)
4. C- in Org. Analysis, which isn't offered anymore by my college. Very concerned about this one since I'm not sure what to do. The class itself was fairly unpredictable (part of why they stopped offering it), but no excuses.

How would you rate my chances at acceptance?

You're definitely good for DPM this cycle. As far as DO, you're really late. If you're going to apply to pod school, you need to be sure you want to become a DPM. The foot and ankle isn't for everyone. Best of luck.

Are you looking to apply this cycle or next? If you are interested in applying this cycle: you have a good chance of getting accepted based on that MCAT score alone. Your GPA is below par but it's certainly not a red flag. Call the smaller schools and see if there are any seats left or if they're just interviewing for waitlist. I'm pretty sure all the big schools still have seats left. If you are planning on applying next cycle, then just shadow as much as you can and apply early (August). You'll stand a good chance even at the smaller schools that early in the cycle. Best of luck.

I'd be looking to matriculate Fall 2016, so I suppose this August.

When are the interviews usually? I might be abroad so I would have to work this out ahead of time.

Thanks!

Most schools start interviewing in late September/Early October each cycle and interview until spots are filled (usually March-April). If you applied right away in August, you could expect to be interviewing in October.

You could go DO or DPM.

If I were in your place I would continue to shadow and ask questions before you make your decision to attend medical school (DO or DPM). The DPM path means that you are going to be limited to the foot. That's a great thing if you want to become a foot specialist but if you want to do more then you might be better off going DO.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first thread since switching my career interest from osteopathic school to podiatry school, and I am very curious on my chances with my stats. I would really appreciate some insight since this was a huge game changing decision for me within the past 6 months and I am sort of stressing out due to my age (27) and starting my schooling career.

Overall gpa = 3.47 (Major :Bio, Minor: Chemistry and Business)
Science gpa = 3.25
Masters GPA= 3.87
Mcat = 19 (My previous score was a 23, but became past the three year mark so it was unusable, I also know I scored lower on my last one due to "bodily issues" during my testing period).

I just finished my MPH from Michigan State in December and I am continuing my research currently at a local hospital for a soon to be publication.

I am very interested in applying to Kent State since it is closer to Michigan and seems to be a great school. I have just begun shadowing a family friend who is a podiatrist, but I have 150+ hours of basic volunteer work, along with 75+ hours of shadowing experience with both MDs and DOs. I also have over three years work experience in a local hospital, as well as 2 years as a micro research student in undergrad. The reason I have switched career optiosn was due to my shadowing experiences with this particular podiatrist, and the overall excitment I had compared to other fields.

I know my MCAT score is at the lower end of many schools, however I hope the rest of my credentials and an early application could help offset that a bit.

Any advice or words of wisdom would be really appreciated, I plan on applying on the first day of the cycle and applying to more schools then just Kent State.

Looking forward to hearing back from anyone!

You have high chances to get in at Kent.

If I were you I would apply right now. You can start this August.

Good Luck!

Hi Everyone!

So I found a spot for the January MCAT and decided to retake it. My Jan score: 10PS, 9BS, 5VR

I'm not too sure if my VR score will automatically reject my application from schools..HELP?

Other Stats:

Double major: Bio & Neuroscience
GPA: 3.94, sGPA: 3.90 (my school does not have grade inflation at all, worked really hard for my GPA)
MCAT: 24 (10PS, 9BS, 5VR)
Will be shadowing a DPM starting next month
Lots of research experience (3 years)
Lots of volunteering experiences
Was a leader of many organizations
2 strong Recommendation letters for sure

You have no reason to worry. If you apply now you could still get in this cycle. You don't have to have your pod LOR before you apply and can interview before turning it in.

If you apply next cycle you will most likely get a large scholarship. Not saying you won't this cycle but it depends if there is still money available.

Strong applicant, when do you plan on applying? And what was your previous MCAT score?

I plan on applying this summer (so I will be entering next year). Previous score was a 19 (my science sections were way too low and I knew something was off so I found a spot for January and retook it).

Do you know if any of the schools have a minimum score per section?

Guess it's time for the annual posting of the "Unofficial KSUCPM2015 Guide to Getting into Podiatry School"...US & international copyrights pending. One more time before graduation:

In a (most likely, once again, futile) attempt to provide clarity/ease fears, here are some personal observations after 4 years of school and some work in the admissions office.

Disclaimer: Opinions are my own and not endorsed by KSUCPM in any way.

-If you have a GPA, especially sGPA, above 3.0, you are good
-if you have an MCAT above 25 you are good
-if you have one of the above, but not the other, take your GPA times 10 and add it to your MCAT. If that number is above 52 and your sGPA is above 2.7 and your MCAT is above 22, you are probably good to be interviewed just make sure you kill that interview.
-If you have neither 3.0 nor 25, the 52 rule is still probably a decent predictor, still.

Cold Hard Facts (ESPN/Coors lawsuit probably still pending, even though I'm pretty sure they stopped running that segment):

-If your undergrad sGPA is below 2.7, it will be EXTREMELY hard for you to handle the curriculum at ANY school of ANY kind of medicine. Not impossible, but you will have to work your tail off in a way you never have before.
-If your MCAT is below 22, you will quite possibly have trouble passing boards, given that it is a standardized test, if nothing else. Also, cannot speak for other schools but MCAT 22 is the stated minimum for Kent (I know there are exceptions you may know/have heard from friends of friends of friends, just reading off the handbook here, people).
-If you have done a ton of research/EC's in undergrad, that is great and admissions people love to see it and you should do them BUT, GPA and MCAT are decent enough predictors of med school success and if you're scoring low on MCAT's and getting more C's than anything else, you need to really be honest with yourself and think if you're going to be able to handle a 20+ credit hour/semester all science curriculum.
-Recognize that numbers of any kind that are thrown around by admissions offices are easily manipulated. Recognize also that admissions offices are part HR department and part marketing department. Choose the school at which you feel that you personally fit in the best.

That said, good luck to everyone starting at every school in August and to those applying for c/o 2019! Am I really that old?
Sending you a private message. Got some questions about my stats with Kent. Thanks!

Long-time Lurker here, just received my MCAT score today and not too thrilled (8PS/6VR/10BS). Have decent GPA and EC's. What are my chances at Podiatry?

--200 hours volunteering ER/patient floors.
--250 hours shadowing multiple sspecialties(mainly ortho) have a letter of rec from a doc and it's very strong
--100 volunteering at a homeless shelter
--Worked as a pharmacy technician for a year in high school
--1.5 years of research in an entomology lab studying bee virus pathology associated with colony collapse disorder with a puplication on the way in months
--4 strong letters of recommendation

--Most recent semester GPA: 3.75 and in higher level sciences courses

Strong upward trend compared to earlier years. Attend a large public university in PA and am a PA resident. Obviously the GPA is not the best. Do I have a shot of acceptance to a podiatry school? Preferably Temple...

No kidding. You have answers multiple times of people telling you you are good for likely all 9 schools. Don't blow the interview. You're at the point where you have to do your own research and decide what profession you want (you have the exact same question in DO and PT boards as well). Stop spamming the same question.

OK, going to throw my stats out there, too, and see what folks think. (Sorry it's so long, but it's a more complete

I'm 34. I have a family with 3 kids. I work a part-time job and a casual job. I am a volunteer firefighter. I volunteer with teaching a kids class at my church, and have been involved with my church in leadership and teaching roles for the last 15+ years. I have lots of other ECs that I have done in the past as well, but won't bore you with those details. I am the current President and former Treasurer of my campus Pre-Med club. I took 6 classes last semester and am taking 5 this semester. I did 3 years of a degree back from 2003-2006, and didn't do so hot. I have now been in school since Jan 2013, and have retaken some of my pre-reqs, and taken others for the first time. My school transcript shows my overall GPA at 3.04, but I am redoing OChem 2 (failed previously) and redoing OChem 1., Because of my bad past, my overall science GPA according to AACPMAS is 2.47 and overall non-science is a 2.93. However, my Junior Science GPA is a 3.30 and my post-baccalaureate (not sure what that means, since I haven't graduated) is a 2.67. My MCAT was a 19 (6PS/6BS/7VR), and I don't have any current plans to retake it, because I want to see what this year holds. I have shadowed over 15 hours with a podiatrist, close to 40 hours with a DO.
I know I don't have great stats, but I have tried to make up for that by showing that I have a dedication to the medical field and that I can balance a busy lifestyle with school. I am on track to get an A or A- in OChem1 and a high B or B+ in OChem 2. I am also on track to get a high B+ in at least one of my bio classes that I am taking this semester (signal trans), and I'm waiting for midterm results in the other bio class.
I guess my basic question, is will I even get looked at with KSU (or anywhere else for that matter)? I have already applied to KSU, but that's the only school so far; I don't want to waste money if there's no hope. I saw in the admissions viewbook that my stats fall into the range of what Kent accepts, but I figured if you had a low MCAT, you probably made up for higher GPA, and vice versa. I'm also considering applying to Western, Barry, and possibly Scholl.

I'm just hopeful that someone will see all of the things I do while I'm in school, and at the very least allow me to plead my case at an interview, but I realize that may be a pipe dream at this point. I try to be very real with myself so that I can plan appropriately for the future.

As a side note, will the fact that I have done exceptionally well in courses specifically related to my degree, even though they seem like they're not officially counted as "science" classes be taken into account (All As in my Neuroscience courses, except for the first one I did when I came back to school - I think I have taken a total of 8 Neuro classes)?

I'm sorry this is so long. I appreciate any response anyone is able to provide.

Hi guys. Econ major
3.0 science
3.4 cumulative
Mcat pending. What would my chances be at this point in the cycle, then again at the beginning of next cycle?

Since you have already applied you should just wait to hear back from Kent. If you don't get in I would give them a call and see what you can do to increase your chances next cycle. Your application will be looked at as a whole but your GPA and MCAT are the main things that will be evaluated. Your "specific" courses won't help much because the science courses and cumulative GPA are what will be most heavily weighed in regards to GPA.

You must consider if you will be successful in Podiatry school. It is harder than undergrad in that you have to learn an ocean of information in so little time. It wouldn't be fun to skim past two years of school only not to pass boards. Proceed cautiously. You don't want to take your family somewhere that you won't succeed.

Hi guys. Econ major
3.0 science
3.4 cumulative
Mcat pending. What would my chances be at this point in the cycle, then again at the beginning of next cycle?
Current cycle: You could get into any of the schools with spots left depending on your MCAT.
Next cycle: All 9 depending on the MCAT.

Hopefully you scored well on the MCAT.

kidding aside you will be good for this and next cycle if you score above a 20. Apply broadly.

Even though i have 2 Ds and a C on transcript from 4 years ago? I have since retaken those classes (ochem +bio) and have received As in both.

Never mind. YOU'RE DOOMED! (too bad sarcasm can't be put into text) Way to bounce back and get A's in the courses.

I still think you have a good shot. Make sure to call the schools before you apply and ask if they have spots. It wouldn't be fun to interview somewhere with a huge wait list.

Hey guys, I posted in here a few weeks ago, and now I've just submitted my application! Thanks for everyone's input!

Wow your stats look amazing! Way to make me more nervous about my 3.0 science gpa. Wish you the best!

Okay well, I always wanted to be a doctor. I love to help people, and am very hands on. I always hated research so I never did any. I am naturally pretty smart and can pull good grades, I have a 3.82 Cgpa from Stony Brook University witha 3.76 sciGPA. I honestly didnt study for my MCATs, I really didnt want to take the new one and I will not take it again. I scored a 26 (10-PS, 8-Verbal, 8-BS). I know this score is low for MD, so I dont even want to really apply. I dont mind doing DO or DPM.

Facts about me:
- I worked 5 years as a librarian assistant in the childrens library (working 25-30 hours a week at atime, along with taking a 16 credit load). I had a lot of supervision duties
- I have my own tutoring business for 4 years now, where I tutor children from underpriveleged backgrounds (both for volunteering and low hourly rates). I have had over 15 students from K-College
- I have volunteered in the hospital ever since I was a high school freshman, although i did less hours in college due to time constraints. I have a solid 100+ hours from college
- I also lost over 150 pounds during sophomore year of college, so that also was a huge transformation and prevented me from doing a lot
- My mom suffered from a uterine disease when I was younger, which exposed me to the medical field, and allowed me to develop interest
- Supported my family throughout college, working 40+ hours a week, plus volunteering, and going through weight loss. Paid half the mortgage and house bills
- Not an URM (Im south asian)
- I am going on a Global Medical Mission trip to Hondurus for 2 weeks in May to help with a medical sustaibility project!
- I have no shadowing experience so I am looking to get that done before I apply this June

Do You think I have a shot at all? Please be honest and tell me what schools I should apply to?

Thank you!

Why not apply to DO in June? You would be insta-accepted.

I applied to podiatry because I'm interested in it! I worked in assisted living and got to learn a lot about podiatry and I thought it would be a good fit :)

I’m planning on applying early September (09/2015). My cumulative GPA is a 3.25 and a science GPA of 2.97. MCAT = 22

Although my sGPA is pretty low, there has definitely been an upward trend (past 3 semesters). The reason for poor grades during the first two years of college was due to financial instability.

750+ hours – medical volunteering experience
6 months – DPM shadowing
2 semesters of independent research
University Honors
Medical Mission - Russia (2 weeks)

I plan on applying to all 9 schools. Do you guys think I have a chance? If so, how many interviews do you think I'll get?
