I'm a career changer, and won't be applying yet. Three issues I want to address are my sGPA, my grad GPA, and shadowing hours.

cGPA: 3.39
sGPA: 3.06 (a math class wasn't withdrawn properly and I unknowingly failed that course, retook it later -_- also got a D in Chem I, retook it too, hoping my A's in O-chem during my post-bacc will show I improved)
grad GPA: 3.21 (doesn't change my overall c/sGPA much...is this bad because grad grades are considered inflated and should be way higher? I've read other threads in other fields either saying it's fine or it's a red flag.)
MCAT: Haven't taken it, but got 505 on practice tests

Haven't shadowed yet, how many hours would be ideal? Volunteering at a hospice right now (200+ hrs, I think), 3 years of research experience, published a paper, and 7 years working in biostatistics.

I really like NYCPM and Temple, but I don't know if my sGPA and grad GPA will give me a shot.

You just need to shadow enough to get something meaningful out of it. You will need to see enough to make sure this is what you wanna do, talk about it on your personal statement, and talk about it at your interview(s). That may take 20, 40, or even 100 hours. There is no minimum, so it's entirely up to you.

If you score around a 505 MCAT, you have nothing to worry about.

Well that's a relief!

I'm curious if I should address my sGPA and grad GPA on a personal statement, or is it better not to say anything and risk bringing even more attention to them if my MCAT is high enough?

I had an obvious period of poor academic performance on my transcript and so I did address it in my personal statement. Temple admissions actually advised me to do so. I knew that once I was in front of an interviewer I could adequately explain away poor past performance. The catch is that you have to make it to the interview in the first place, right? So I did use a portion of my personal statement to address it.

Some people will tell you not to address it though, so there are differing opinions on the matter and perhaps someone else will chime in.

Hi, I was a previous applicant to DO schools. I had a 26 MCAT, 3.3 cGPA and a 3.0 sGPA. Working on retaking the MCAT later on, and taking a few science classes in biology now. Should have three New A's in biology to add in a month,

I have always known about podiatry but I really want to consider it now, learning that they are allowed to perform surgery (Something I have been interested in).

MCAT is fine but higher = better.

Shadow. Your stats are average for incoming. With the higher bio classes coming in to bump sGPA, shouldn't be a problem to get interviews.

You need to have a defining reason for picking pod so admissions doesn't think you're just one of the DOs jumping ship. Personally I find no problem with that either as you have the stats/work ethic to become a find podiatrist. Just make sure you shadow and really get a feel for what podiatry is and not just a plan C- plan D.

Also if you are taking a gap year, consider applying for internships. I know Temple has a winter and summer one that will get you very close to the school and admissions. CSPM has one as well but its more of a come and see rather than a real internship. This serves two-fold: give you more exposure to the field, and lets schools see your face.

As for surgery- its good to have enthusiasm and interest in a surgical based field.

However in order to get there, you need to do well in pod school and well on the boards. The first 2 years of pod school are very similar to DO. There are some schools that have their first 2 years (with the exception of 1-2 courses) mixed with DO students.

Continue to work hard. Focus on getting in first and doing well in your classes.

What are my chances?

I am going to apply for the next cycle in August. I took the MCAT in 2014 before the change and got a 28. I am wondering if I will need to retake it. My cGPA was 3.78 and sGPA was 3.58. I started to firmly become interested in podiatry my senior year and started shadowing since then with 30 hours to now. I am currently a year out of undergrad. I have done a year of research and I work as a full time chemist for a CRO right now, but I have never volunteered at a hospital. In college, I was also a D2 athlete and worked as a tutor and writing consultant.

You don't need to worry about your stats, they are well above average. You don't need to retake mcat, since it's only been 2 years.

Start looking up schools and see which one you like

Your mcat score is decent, I wouldn't retake it unless it's been 3+ years.

Your sgpa is a little low, but if you apply early, you should get interviews.

The most important step for you is to shadow a podiatrist and see if you really want to pursue the career. Don't let pod be your backup.

I had similar stats (cGPA: 3.25/sGPA: 2.96 - strong upward trend) but a lower MCAT score (489 - equivalent to 19 on old scale). I received 3 interview invites and was waitlisted at AZPOD for an interview. At the end, I think it all has to do with how you "sell yourself" on the application.

Thanks for the encouragement. I don't have an upward trend but I stayed pretty consistent, if that makes any difference. So did you get accepted to AZPOD?

Hi everyone! I'm a rising senior at Loyola University Chicago
Cumulative gpa: 2.859 science gpa: somewhere around there?
I started out bad as a freshmen did poorly in my classes because of no financial help, parents left basically telling me to pay for school. then came back into my life and then both parents went thru major heart surgeries which affected my grades because I took care of them.

-Upward trend I have been getting a 3.1-3.4 since freshmen year
-Did receive a D in physics retaking it now. Retook orgo 1 after getting a D in the first time, passed with a C. just took orgo 2 and got a C-. Pretty bumped out about that
-Do research at university of Chicago Hospital: learned bedside manners, how to talk to patients, and clinical hours.
-Volunteer at Ronald McDonald House of Charities for the past 4 years
-Shadowed 4 podiatrists and MD's, DO's including pediatricians, surgeons, heart specialist, family practice doctors.
- have done 70 hours of Clinical experience in Chicago at a family practice doctor and have done soap notes.
-Was a senator in Student government, in south asian student association, in muslim student association, pre-podiatry club

I will be taking my MCAT this august, I will study and put my entire life and soul into that exam. I truly do I want to be accepted into podiatry medical school I think its a wonderful growing field and can really see my self helping others relieve their pain. Please tell me if I have a chance, my low gpa and bad grades really upset me I wish I can go back and repeat my grades but unfortunately life circumstances and time cannot be changed now.

So what you're saying is..."What are my chances?"...there's a thread for that.

Your chances will depend entirely on your MCAT, since your GPA is so low. I assume you'll at least need over a 500, but maybe even higher than that.

HI, yes I did post in there and I wanted to post in here too. Just want opinion on what I should do, even apply this cycle.

You'll be good to apply next cycle, which starts in August. Your GPA should be above any automatic cutoffs so your app will at least get looked at by all the schools. Your MCAT is what's gonna make or break the deal. You'll also wanna apply ASAP, your chances will be higher towards the beginning of the cycle.

Also, for future reference, there's no need to double post. If you post, it will be seen.

Keep doing your best. If you do really well on your MCAT you will have a chance at a school with a large class size.

Okay great thank you. I will be taking my MCAT in August and have started studying for it, will work really hard to achieve the highest possible MCAT score. Yes I will definitely apply in august. oh thank you, I just made my account today, I wasn't quite sure if people are active on this or not. One more question, can I submit my application in August but I will take my MCAT in August? its registered for August 4th. is that possible?

You can start the application process as soon as it opens, something like the first Wednesday of August I think. You'll still need to send your transcripts into the application service and they'll have to verify them. That can all take 3 or 4 weeks in it's own. You should have your MCAT score back in about 30 days, right? Then you submit that to the application service as well. The MCAT only takes them a day or two to verify, the transcripts are the long drawn out part. After your transcripts and MCAT are all verified, you'll be good to go. You'll probably have until around the second week of September before any schools really start looking at apps anyway.

I don't have a great excuse for my W's other than that I didn't want to get a C in the class. Will this really hurt my chances of getting in? Do adcoms from all schools require you to address the W's that you have?

Great question!

They will look at your entire application and this may or may not hurt you. If it is a trend they may ask you about it during the interiews. Maybe start looking at the interview feedback section to see which schools ask about grades.

3.25 gpa
3.0 science

what do i need on my mcat?
Do the best to can. The higher you score the more scholarships you will be offered.

If you get a decent score you'll have no problem getting in.

3.8 science gpa

What is the latest I could take the MCAT for this coming cycle? I would be looking at January most likely. Would that be okay and allow me entrance to schools like MW-AZ, DMU?

Quick Google search yields:

When should I take the MCAT?
Applicants seeking admission to DMU-CPMS for fall 2016 entrance should plan to take the MCAT by no later than spring 2016 – the last acceptable exam is typically the May administration. Please note, due to our process of rolling admission, it is to your advantage to complete the MCAT earlier in the cycle, as we typically fill our class by April each year.

Taken from DMU website.

Hey everyone. I have just started to really consider podiatry school after I talked with some physicians and a friend in pod school. I'm curious what my options are and if i'm considered a competitive applicant. I really appreciate everyone taking time out their busy schedules to give me some feedback.

STATS:
3.6 CGPA
3.5 SGPA
495 MCAT (Will be retaking in JULY)
Ended undergrad with 15 straight A's which included OCHEM 1 & 2, BIOCHEM, and physics 2
2 summer internships working in oncology and geriatrics with a MD at a highly prestigious university
Have a paper published in a social science journal
200 hours in a research lab
EMT-B
150 hrs of volunteering at hospital and currently volunteering at the VA

There are no Pod Schools in my state of residence. My letter of rec is from a MD and 2 of my college professors, but unfortunately i never got off the waitlist. I'm going to shadow a POD after the MCAT and get a rec from him.

Regarding the application for AACPMAS do I have to have my letter of recommendations in before they are considered complete and I can be granted an invite? Or do I just have to ensure that the schools have them by interview day? Also are there secondaries like the MD and DO applications?

What schools would you suggest I apply to that will give me a fighting shot?

Thanks everyone!!
First off, very solid application especially if you pull up your MCAT a bit. Are you asking about applying for this current cycle to start in the fall? If you're asking your chances for the 2016-17 application you could potentially get an interview invite most anywhere (pending new MCAT score) and should get some acceptances as well based on your stats alone. As for this current cycle its really hard to say this late. I've heard of people apply as late as the first of June and be accepted by the end of June but that's a pretty tall order.

Generally, no, you do not need to have all of your letters in as most are submitted through Interfolio or the school's personal letter system. Letters are not part of the AACPMAS application process. You will need a letter from a DPM as I believe all schools require it except for maybe one. I believe some schools will grant interviews without all letters received, but will obviously require them before offering a seat.

There are no secondaries.

Thanks for the input. I will be applying next cycle which opens in Aug. I def feel that I will increase my MCAT Score, but worst case scenario if I don't it sounds like a 495 with my GPA should get me an acceptance somewhere?
Your MCAT is just about at the average + your GPAs are well above the average. So just off your stats, you should have an above average chance of getting in. You'll get interviews to most if not all of the schools, just don't bomb the interviews and you'll have more acceptances than you know what to do with. Heck, even if you bomb the interviews you'll probably still get acceptances.

Awesome. From my research it seems like all of the class sizes are relatively small so I'm curious which schools are more selective. I'm interested in Samuel Merritt and Western as they are both out west where I live, but they have class sizes around 50. Also from previous experiences I know Cali school prefer in state residents. Is this the same for POD?

Lastly I've read a lot on SDN that POD students take the same classes and exams as the DO students. Do you happen to know which programs are like this.

* on second thought scratch Samuel Merritt. My rent alone will be more than tuition....
I believe Western, Midwestern, DMU, and Scholl are the most integrated with DOs/MDs.

Hi Guys,

I am starting this thread to collect surveys of stats for those who plan to apply/have applied/have been accepted to NYCPM (New York College of Podiatric Medicine). Feel free to post:
-cGPA/sGPA
-MCAT (new score or old score)
-ECs

Personally I have:

cGPA=3.34/sGPA=3.3
MCAT= still waiting to get a score (will be taking Aug. 5th 2016, hoping to get at least in the 490s)
ECs= volunteer ambulance corp. as an EMT, DII athlete for 4 years, research internship and undergrad training, shadowed 2 DPM, job of 2 years in retail

What would you say my chances of getting in are?

There is an official What Are My Chances Thread.

Please post in there instead of making a separate one. Even if its exclusively for NYCPM.

your GPA is good, almost similar to mine. ECs are pretty good too.

Always aim high when it comes to your MCAT. However, based on my experience, you should aim for at least 495+ if you want to get an interview at NYCPM and Temple.

In terms of chances, it really depends on what you get on the MCAT. Get a decent score and you should be good to go.

ECs are solid and GPAs are acceptable/average to what incoming applicants have.

Do what @skim25 said and go as high as you can for the MCAT. Eat breathe and **** the MCAT from now until August and you have a sure-fire chance of getting interviews if not acceptances.

Also, forever is a long time. No need to go quite that far. You might have to work for it, but you can get there. People will probably tell you to do a master program or put in another year or two to try to get closer to a 3.0.
