Oklahoma State University (OSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe early admittance interviews are held separately.
Well if that's the case, you would think if the regular interviews have concluded then we would have heard some sort of response by now. Whether it be a rejection or belated interview invite.

there is, but you have to be invited by the admin which took a little bit for me! Congrats!
Thank you! My facebook name is simplified and does not match my legal name (which is long and hard to spell). Do you think that will be a problem or that I should contact someone about it?

Current students: In the financial aid allowance there is allowed 6000$ for first years for books and supplies. Do most students use all of this? It seems like a ton of money for books and supplies.

The money you get is just whatever is left after tuition/fees have been paid (not factoring in grad plus if you need that). It's a lump sum that goes to your bank account, use it as you see fit. The cost of attendance breakdown is just what is reported to the government and they do try to pad those numbers a little for your benefit. If you need to ask Uncle Sam for more money, you can borrow up to the COA without filling out a budget sheet.

Oh and something they forget to tell you: the money from first year has to get you through the summer between MS1/2 so plan accordingly.

tl;dr--Most students probably use all of that $6000, but it doesn't exactly go mostly to books and supplies.

Does anyone know how full the class is currently?

Call it what you want, lol of you who were denying my claim of a more minority's focused year. I called up there, this year they are on schedule to finish their matriculating class at an average 498 MCAT and 3.4 cGPA. While I know many of you think I was making up stories to justify why I never received s phone call from OSU, well, that is just pure ignorance. Also, for those of you who discounted the claim I spoke of about OSU pushing for heavy minority representation this year, well, you also are mistaken and showing your ignorance. I have explains this time and time again, but too few times do people ACTUALLY look into a claim before jumping to conclusions just to defemd their view point. One user actually went as far as to say OSU never posted on Facebook about minority recruitment (which is a huge lie). OSU, this year, will have one of the most diverse classes they have ever had. Not only will they be diverse, but they are also going to have an incredibly low average on their entrance statistics this year when speaking comparatively. Not that any of this matters to me since I wouldn't choose OSU given my past experiences with them (which is a shame because OSU was my propr #1), but I just wanted to update all of the inpfnorant posters about my most recent phone call for to the admissions coordinator. Thank you all for reading and I hope all of you the very best of cycles! :)

I think we might all be able to guess why OSU hasn't called you back yet... and it's got nothing to do with ethnicity...

Assuming pretty much all of this is directed at me: I did not claim there wasn't recruitment of minorities, and did not see anything on the school's facebook page other than what I mentioned in a previous post (sorry didn't feel like scrolling back past several months). You never backed up your claim so that we could all know what programs you are talking about (I'd genuinely like to know about these minority recruitment efforts), so if you have explained this "time and time again" it must have been in some other thread.

OrdinaryDO scored the 33 percentile on CARS and OSU has a minimum of 7 in each subsection of the MCAT. That seems like a likely culprit.

You don't have to guess, you can find the exact stats online. But, OOS applicants are going to be exceptional applicants I would assume. OSU has as average cGPA and sGPA of 3.65 and 27 MCAT so I would assume an OOS applicant would be much higher than that. OSU also has the largest Teaching hospital in the nation in downtown Tulsa. It is pretty amazing.

I have a friend who is MS4 here. All of the osteopathic physicians I have shadowed are from OSU. It is a great school. I live down the road from OSU-CHS.

I didn't mean to come off the wrong way, I was just sort of "thinking out loud." OSU is an amazing school with a mission to provide physicians to Oklahoma based on need, do you by any chance have strong ties or obligations to oklahoma?

Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention the comment I quoted you for. I was just going to say that as Osteopathic physicians I could imagine the rate of students leaving their D.O. schools would much higher than M.D. schools for the simple fact that their are many D.O. schools that are privately funded and have no preference for IS vs OOS, therefor I could see there being a lot of OOS students coming for medical school, then returning back home. But, this may not be the case. Many students form a sense of loyalty for the region that has taken them in and treated them well. I plan on staying wherever I get accepted. Oklahoma State is my home University and 20 minutes from my house. I would have free transportation, rent, food, etc. If I got in to OSU. I am also an IS resident, so I have better shot at getting a look here than elsewhere. But, I am open to whoever gives me the time of day. Burrell is looking very nice, also.

Poor guy. I know how it feels to be rejected by your home institution and shut down from your first choice school

Actually, OSU did not set section minimums this year - likely because of the new MCAT. I had called earlier in the year to ask, and Sarah said they only have an overall minimum. That said - low scores in any section will certainly hurt your application.

I called yesterday and Sarah said they are still holding interviews. Just thought some people who haven't heard back would like to hear that.

To current students: what do you think the rationale behind that decision is? Do you think they are having a hard time filling the class or something?

I will be the first to admit this WAS my first choice simply due the COA and the fact that I lived basically right next door to the school. Who wouldn't choose a school where you could save literally ~$250k? As far as the educational staff and curriculum are concerned I definitely feel like I have better options, but I am not here to downplay the amazing efforts OSU has put into their programs. All of my mentors are graduates from this amazing school, but I am certainly not bitter about being rejected from my home institution.

I never said they set section minimums, this was actually the first question I called and asked about due to my one low scoring section on the MCAT. I am saying that as an overall effort OSU has dropped their average MCAT and GPA for this class thus far by quite a bit. Just off the top of my head, I think last year was an average of 27 for the MCAT and 3.6 for cGPA and this year is around 498 (~ <25 old MCAT) and 3.40 cGPA.

Now, like they always say, correlation does not necessarily pin point the causation and I am NOT saying that minority recruiting is the only reason behind these statistics, but it sure does make me lean even harder towards that assumption since they have been targeting the Indian and African American populations very openly and with great efforts.

I am extremely excited to be attending medical school next year and I mean nothing negative in my posts, but I did want to express how I felt about this application cycle and you all expressed your opinions as well.

Through the grapevine I learned that the former admissions director had stepped down and the admissions specialists had stepped in, essentially pulling double duty.
That is only what I was told.

I'm skeptical of these 498 and 3.4 averages. Med school admissions averages are going up so why would it drop 8 MCAT points (new MCAT) and .2 GPA points? Also anecdotally average LizzyM of the people I know who are attending OSU 2020, me and accepted people on this thread who posted stats have an average lizzyM of ~66. A far cry from the 58-59 one person is claiming.

By the way @DoctorKrieger is there any word on a match list?
Haven't seen anything. Last I heard was "...in a couple of days" earlier this week so should be pretty soon.

I'm sure you know this but match lists, while fun to look at where people go for residency, really have little value when trying to predict one's chances at landing a 'successful' spot of their own.

I would just like to know why you assume that there is such a correlation between minority recruitment and an entering class that may have somewhat lower stats than some previous classes. Are minorities only capable of performing at sub-par levels, hence the "sub-par class" that will be starting this fall? Maybe...just a thought...minority students are actually quite capable of performing to the same standards as the WASP kids (guessing you're one) that like to blame their rejection from schools, jobs, whatever they applied to, on the recruitment of such sub-par, sub-standard human beings such as some of us who may or may not fall in said sub-par/minority category. Maybe they are looking for character qualities, not just stats. Like I said, just a thought.

^^^ ordinary DO is just salty guys. Leave him be lol. We know we are going to an amazing school, and so what if the average is lower? In four years we will all be OSU docs and not give a crap about our undergrad stats haha

Accepted students - Have you filled out the medical release forms? If so do we need to bring proof of vaccinations or just sign saying we've had them. Can I just stop by the school to drop them off, or do I need to mail them?

Yes
Yes you need proof
I'd mail them to make sure they get into the right hands like everyone elses

If you mail the vaccination/medical records, be sure to mail them to the student clinic, not anyone at the school. They don't want any kind of medical records in the student affairs office.

I was only just invited to do an interview next week. I called a few weeks ago and they said they were done so this is a happy surprise. Anything different to expect. I've only interviewed at OU.

Awesome!!! Go to the interview feedback page on SDN and look at common questions. There are some funky ones you will see and if you take time to prepare you will be fine! I remember at my interview students that didn't prepare for these regretted it later! I did, and found the interview to be very pleasant and the best (most laid back/ inviting) interview experience I had out of the 8 that I went to. You got this!!

Why are you all taking this so personal? No, I am not saying minorities are under-performing compared to the so-called WASP students (which I am not, btw), I was just making an observation from what I have read in the past and applying it to what I have read on here. There is no underlying agenda to what I have said in the past and I tried to clarify what I meant and I said sorry to those I mislead with my words, but for some reason it still has some people angry. I can't help you with that. Sorry..again.

Who says I won't be going to OSU? Before you quote me, remember, interviews are still being held.

Once again, I love this school and I have always admired it as I drove by it every day. All of the physicians who wrote LORs for me and I shadowed in the past are alumni from OSU-COM. I have nothing but good things to say about OSU-COM - My earlier statements were just notions said to dig deeper into why such low statistics this year as compared to last year. So, once again, my bad if I hurt anyone's feelings or stepped on anyone's toes.

I am still so confused regarding interviews and if they are still being given out??? I keep seeing different people saying completely opposite things about the subject.

Juice, they are 100% still conducting interviews for this cycle. I even specified when asking Sarah and was like "are the interviews for early admits for next cycle" and she said "no they are for this cycle". That conversation was on Friday (4/1). I would call up there too and ask for an update on your application so they know you're still interested in the school.

Best of luck to those still waiting.

They have an orientation week at the beginning of school where they show you how to use the software required for class on both windows/mac platforms. So it really just comes down to personal preference. I have a mac and I love it, but its just my preference.

People are taking it personally because you are insulting the class that they hope to be a part of. I've been accepted at OSU-COM. I'm part of the reason the stats are lower. I have a 3.11 GPA and a 29 cumulative on the MCAT. Not a minority though. Obviously, there are other factors to look at besides the color of your skin and stellar statistics. I wasn't even going to join these forums but your posts are maddening. You need to take a long, hard look at yourself if you honestly cannot tell why what you have written is being taken as offensive. It's ugly.

I had a mac, then got a surface pro 3, bought another mac after like 2 months because the surface is significantly harder to use. Just my 2 cents but somebody would literally have to pay me to use a surface again.

What was difficult about using the surface? I have an old one that runs some weird RT version of Windows. Almost entirely unable to customize it but it has served me in undergrad well. I was considering a new one for school but you've got me rethinking it.

Maybe I am just not very smart, but I feel like windows surface almost tries too hard. Just too much going on, and unless you are a computer wiz or familiar it will be difficult to run. I like Mac because it is simple and efficient. Not as much "frills" I guess. Also, I feel like my Mac software runs much smoother, and the finger pad on Mac's are heads and tails better than dealing with that awful surface keyboard. However, I admit computers are not exactly something that I am passionate about or efficient with except for standard things like word, excel, internet, ect.

I just want to make a point here real quick. I NEVER said the two had anything to do with each other. I posted about one thing in the beginning and that post had to do with the interviews being offered and the lower stats..subsequently after that I brought up the point of OSU-CHS targeting the minority class this year due to their advertisements and outreach programs. NEVER ONCE did I mention the two together, that was someone else to decided it would be a good idea to correlate those two posts. That was not ME. So when anyone on here asks me why I am trying to say minority students aren't up to par with other students you can think those out there who decided to take two completely independent points and placing them together in such a way that the context spells out a sort of racist remark. If you are going to insult me with these statements then at least do your due diligence and read when and how I wrote my responses or posts. Thanks...

Now, the reason I came here tonight. I will be interviewing at OSU on April 15th! I am a Tulsa area native and have a potential place for some of you to stay overnight should you want to save some money and get to know each other. I can provide transportation, tours of the area, and guidance for anything you might need help with. PM me if you are interested and we can talk. I am always here to help when I can and I would love to help you out if wanted. My fiance will be with me so if you are a male or female you are more than welcome to take me up on this offer absolutely free of charge. Let me know ASAP if you are interested! Thanks everyone!

You are the only person I know of that is affiliated with OSU-CHS and denies the extra push for minority recruitment. I still text back and forth with a department chair from OSU-CHS (used to work with her) and I also have close friendships and close mentors who either OMS-IV or alumni and actively practice medicine in the Tulsa Metro area - all of those people pretty much agreed with that statement when I asked why they seemed to be recruiting differently this year (many more sub-par individuals this class). You can go to their website and even their Facebook and see exactly what I mean. They take pride in their diversity and they are trying to tackle the issue now more than ever.

Call it what you want, lol of you who were denying my claim of a more minority's focused year. Nobody is creating the context but you.

Look what happened in my post. I stated I got in. That I wasn't a minority. I stated that I had lower statistics. I never explicitly stated that you were racist. It was implied by my writing, right? Just like it was implied in yours.

I believe you when you say that it isn't what you meant. I genuinely hope your interview goes well. If you get in, maybe don't bring up how low everyone's scores are to your fellow classmates though. People tend to take that stuff personally.

Believe me, I get it, all I was trying to do was provide information for others out there. I had no intention to say the minorities had anything to do with the lower scores, but some people felt like I did and I apologize if I came off as confrontational or anything other than informative. I would LOVE to join the OSU family and grow in the field of medicine with all of you. Please don't take anything I say to heart, for more times than not I am just trying to provide information for people to base their judgements off of or whatever they may use it for. Thanks for understanding, Electrode.

Screw stats and numbers. The only stats that matter for us now that we are in are board/class exams (which we will crush if we all work together), the amount of lives we change for the better, and my K/D ratio in Call of Duty (which is well above 2 I might add).

Stats don't matter once you get into medical school. Now you just have to pass your boards and love up to the oath.

Screw stats and numbers. The only stats that matter for us now that we are in are board/class exams (which we will crush if we all work together), the amount of lives we change for the better, and my K/D ratio in Call of Duty (which is well above 2 I might add).

I've been picking up useful resources for well known study material so I'm not trying to buy it all at once or anything. Be glad to study with others so we can share and combine any resources we may have. The Sketcy series is going to be awesome for all of us since they are expanding the material

I am going to do firecracker to stay on top of things (unfortunately if I don't re-review information I lose a lot of it), I also am going to use first aide to study with class material. I have talked to a lot of people and they say if you wanna do really well on boards this helps (n=10ish). I really wanna do exceptional on boards because I tend to like a different area of medicine every week so I just wanna make sure I am not limited when I finally decide lol. I think if we all did this and worked together we would do really well! (Plus we all need to stay at nickel creek so we can have pool parties after we bust some test curves).
