General inquiry: According to the 2010 Physician Compensation Survey, ophthalmology had an overall 7.7% increase due to: "Ophthalmologists reaping the benefits of the growing popularity of laser refractive surgery and other non-covered services."

I imagine they are referring to procedures such as ptosis repair, blephs, and brow lifts in addition to refractive surgery. Are there others? What are the out-of-pocket expenses for these common procedures?

Most ptosis repair is done under insurance coverage. Blephs are more of a mix, some under insurance, some not. Brow lifts are similar to blephs, some are cosmetic and some functional.

Since the most common of all procedures by far, not just in ophthalmology but in all disciplines, is cataract surgery, the most likely source of increase in elective surgical income is enhanced IOLs and combination refractive-cataract procedures, LRI or LASIK with custom IOL.

Toric and multifocal lenses are the primary non-covered items in many comprehensive practices. They're nice because there's really no significant additional overhead required, unlike laser refractive surgery.
