P4 interested in a PGY1 Residency!

HI, I am currently a P4 and I am interested in doing a residency and planning on going to Midyear!
Does anyone have any advice on what I should be doing to prepare right now? When is a good time to ask for recommendation letters?
Is it a good idea to visit sites right now? or wait till I'm offered any interviews?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
