Pain Fellowship Match 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Put a sandwich in your pocket for Cedars. They don't feed you or give you time for lunch.

Just for future applicants' knowledge. Cedars had breakfast and lunch provided with plenty of time for both. They had really good Greek the day I was there.

I was part of the 2015 season and by the end of april I already had completed two interview. Not sure if the timeline is the same this year as ERAS is new.

Are any of you emailing the programs with supplemental documents? (i.e ITEs) or are you only doing this upon request?

Love the username. I ended up sending my ITEs to everyone. They'll contact you if they need anything else that wasn't in ERAS. For instance, UCSD asked for a supplemental form to be filled out by my residency PD and intern year PDA and some places asked for a copy of my med school diploma.

Only sending if requested. Just curious.. what did all you pain applicants score on your CA1 and CA2 ITE's?

If a program provides you a set of interview dates, are most of them pretty flexible about accommodating you for another date if you cannot make their original specified dates?

Some of these programs emailed me earlier to wait on my in service score to be complete and because I'm NEURO I had to wait longer than most people....do you think once they offer interview invites they are done? Or is there still a chance I may here from them

Hard to say. I know at least Emory sent 2 waves of invites and maybe more we don't know about because of the small sample size on SDN. I'd just call places up and ask if they're done interviewing. I have a buddy who applied late and he just called programs before applying so he wouldn't waste his time or money.

*******

Do programs typically send out more than 1 wave of interview invites?

My application became complete JUST after interviews were already sent out from UCSD and Rush. Do I need to contact these programs or are interviews rolling and are they continuing to send out invites?

*Note: If you receive a 2nd round invite, please add the date to the running list (do not re-add the entire program name on a new line).

Why did you apply so late?? You're just complete now, it's almost May??

Anyone have a sense of how many interviews are needed to give you a decent chance at matching? I know, I know, as many as you can get. But really.

Only a guess based upon what I've heard from previous residents.

Top applicant - 3-5
Average applicant - 5-8
Below average - 8-10+

Took this from the PM&R thread. Might be a good idea to list rejections so that others can see if they are still in the running at a program.

What did you guys score on your CA1/CA2 ITE's?

Anyone heard how many applicants this year? up/down from last year? looks like around 400 applicants for last 2 years. Don't know how to tease out the US applicants vs foreign...anyone have that data? What's the word on the street for interest in Pain this year?

I can't remember ITE...passed the written board. I applied to a lot of programs, in fact all of them participating in ERAS... I think 72...willing to relocate anywhere to accomplish my goals. I've got one interview under my belt, one rejection....nothing else yet.
Not seeing the benefit of having been out in practice in terms of getting interviews; this being in line with what I've been told about this process. Not starting to freak out yet because it's early but I'm always just a little worried.

Are ITEs and LORs the main things programs are considering? I've seen some programs asking for usmle/comlex scores. Is that more of a traditional thing or are they really looking at what you got as a med student? Obviously, research is a plus.

I did ooookaaaaay on the ITE.
Nothing crazy.

It appears to be more on LORs, research experience, general work/education experience etc. I think step scores and ITE/SAE scores aren't all that important. I've been on two interviews, and in both they've asked specifically about other stuff, no one has mentioned scores to me..

Hey guys, long time lurker here, never really felt the urge to post until fellowship application season! My home program does not have a pain fellowship so I feel like I am applying with little information/advice. Have only received two interview offers thus far from maybe a dozen programs applied to. With the match in place, does anyone have a sense from co-residents, fellows or PDs at your program what is an average or "adequate" number of interviews to go on and rank? Also, how are people finding the time to even go on more than 4 or 5 interviews? Your programs must have pretty liberal vacation/professional development policies!

I have a small sample size but previously matched residents seems like at least 5 is a reasonable number to shoot for. Definitely not easy to schedule these interviews. Lots of switches, favors, IOUs. Makes you appreciate the Monday, Friday, and Saturday interviews.

I guess I'm lucky cause my director lets us travel to fellowship interviews any time we like and we don't even have to declare vacation days for them. I have 5 interview offers so far (midwest and south). Applied to 23 programs.
