Pain Fellowship Match 2015

So its past mid July. I feel like all the programs are pretty much done and whatever interviews have been given are pretty much what you're gonna get.. maybe one more and that too probably because of a cancellation or something.



So coming from neurology, I have 8 interviews with 7 of programs participating in the match. These programs account for a total of 33 positions through the match......... What are my chances!?!?

Yea, by now you pretty much have the interviews you are going to get, unless someone cancelled and they invite you. So I'm not accepting any more interviews past this point (honestly, I wouldn't want to interview somewhere where they didn't really want me at first anyways).

I think with 7 interviews your chances are pretty good, unless you are an unbelievably unlikeable person ;). It all depends on how you think you did during interviews or how the programs felt about you at this point.

I gotta disagree on that point. Maybe in the past that was more true. But now with ERAS, programs are getting slammed with applications (over 250 apps per spot at some places). The difference between getting an interview last minute vs earlier isn't necessarily that big and is hugely subjective and can be as simple as "applicant A is from our state and applicant B isn't, let's give the invite to A." I wouldn't waste the opportunity to show a program the person instead of the paper.

I think it's safe to say whatever interviews you have now are all that you're going to get and any programs you haven't heard from are probably not considering applications for interviews any more
 
I did not meet many applicants from those institutions with a big name pain fellowship at my interviews. Does that mean many of them have already been promised a position from their home programs? does that explain why some big name programs only interview a small number of applicants?
 
Anyone getting feedback from programs asking you to rank them high? I only had one program tell me to do that but iheard from past years its very common for programs to contact interviewees they like anyone else hear of this?

I've heard the entire range of responses. Been getting more "you'd be a great fit for our program." I have received a few "we will be ranking you highly." I haven't heard anything about "you are ranked to match." The other half are non-commital and generic. These responses are nice but it's all a game and won't affect how I do my rank.
 
Do you rank a program highly that didn't send you a reply vs one that did?

Anyone hear feedback from MD Anderson post interview?
 
Rank according to your preference. Match favors the applicant. Nice to know you're wanted but it shouldn't necessarily change your list. Nice to be wanted but if they want you, they'll rank you high whether you rank them first or last
 
Do you guys contact some PDs and let them know you rank them high? I feel it would not change anything, but I do not know if I should do it anyone.

I think for the most part, it does not matter. A PD will likely not change their rank list based upon your list. And you can end up doing more harm than good (esp if you change your mind about your ranking last minute). Better to just keep this to yourself and let the match work itself out. You also may inadvertently come off needy/annoying. The only reason I would consider doing this is if I really had a geographic need to match at a specific program (eg. family issues, spouse job issues, etc.) But this should have already been discussed during your interview.

That being said, I have heard from at least 1 program that they would like to know if I will be ranking them high. This was a prominent program in the midwest that has only a few fellows. I imagine the thought process behind this is that there are probably plenty of qualified applicants and the PD's wish is to fill their program with fellows who genuinely want to be at their program and not fellows who are only going there because their other ranks fell through. Or maybe they were just curious.

I've heard back from 2 programs that I will be ranked to match. Although one is from my home institution on the West so that may not really count.
