Anyone know a good text and handbook for Pediatrics? I'm gonna need to brush up on it for the new job in 4 weeks.

Congrats on getting the peds job - not sure on general textbook for brushing up (do you have your old notes from class?)... The only references I know are drug info resources like the Teddy Bear book (pediatric injectable drugs), extemporaneous compounds for pediatrics, etc. My only references for general knowledge are my notes.

Here's a general article I have found online for a few drugs that have altered kinetics in kids/neonates: http://www.uspharmacist.com/content/d/feature/i/2066/c/35936/

They didn't teach anything about peds at Touro for our class and didn't offer any peds rotations either.

That stinks - we had part of a semester's worth of lectures in our therapeutics class. We have a few peds rotations (I didn't preference any). I'll see if I can find any of my old notes / see if I have them electronic. Are you interested if I can find them?

I've heard Pediatric Pharmacotherapy by Benavides et al is good, but I haven't forked over the >$100 to see for myself. Lexicomp's Pediatric and Neonatal Dosage Handbook is an excellent reference, but would have no value for "brushing up."

Interestingly, my school includes 1-2 pediatric lectures in each therapeutics course and has a series of 3 pediatric elective courses and a number of pediatric APPE rotations.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but anyone know good resource in addition to those that have been suggested?

Hah. I didn't realize this was a necro bump and thought that Sparda was taking another job in peds.

Honestly just get a subscription to Lexicomp if your hospital doesn't have it. I assume you aren't going into a specialist position if you are looking for a review, so you should be fine. Ask questions during your training and just double check doses until you get it down. Always be extra cautious when dealing with neos because their gestational age, post-natal age, weight, and creatinine all come into play when dosing antibiotics.

My personal holy trinity of pediatric handbooks are Lexicomp (Peds edition), the Teddy Bear book, and Neofax. That last one in particular is invaluable if you will be dealing with a NICU.

Lexicomp is helpful. The guides offered for peds BCPS (through ACCP?) are also helpful!

neofax (forneonates - duh?) and harriet lane

Nope, they're just rotating me to Peds and NICU at my hospital.

Oh cool, I have access to most of these sources. Is there anything that I should be wary of when dealing with pediatrics (IV fluids, unusual orders, etc) ?
