The key question is to ask yourself is if you'd be able to sleep at night at the prospect of not matching and having to reapply for the 2nd (or 3rd, etc) time. Or would you hate yourself for not taking the position. Personally match is too risky, and akin to Russian roulette in my book. I'd personally take the position, suck it up for a 1.5 years (be thankful its not 2) and screw match.

Here's the catch: I hate this area and was looking to move away when I went to residency and only applied here as a safety. Heck, I will not even date someone from this area for risk of having to come back here to visit inlaws. BUT if I take the position 1) I do not have to gamble and risk not matching (I am not a lucky person) 2) I would finish six months sooner 3) I would have a job to moonlight with if necessary.

How many programs will you be ranking if you stay in the match? More than five? that would play a big factor for me. Also, do you consider the said program to be a strong, average, or below average program in terms of your training. You seem to really not like your current city as hate is such a strong word! I'd probably stay in the match if I'd be ranking five stronger programs than the one you were offered a spot. Just my opinion as an outsider. Good luck in your decision as it would be super tough for me too!

I have not heard from LMC Arizona...does anybody know their direct number where I can contact them to know the status of my application ( probably rejection :))

I would say it comes down to whether you value security or freedom more. If, when you really sit down and think about it, you value having a sure spot, and you cannot imagine potentially not matching, then take the offer.

However, if your dislike of the location and/or program is so strong that you can't imagine staying there in order to complete the residency, then take your chances with the match. I'll echo what was said earlier, and say that if you are planning on ranking 5 or more programs above this one, then stay in the match.

LMC had their interviews already at the end of Oct - they only have 2 days of interviews which are both over

I still don't entirely understand the entire match process. Several people keep mentioning how unreliable/risky it is. Have people heard some horror stories when it comes down to match time??

Remember that the stats are for those that actually do match. According to the 2012 stats, roughly 1 in 2 persons, PARTICIPATING IN THE MATCH (doesn't account for non match programs), did not match to pedo. Those that did typically get somewhere in the top 3.

Match is just a scary beast I wish we didn't have to succumb to.
 
So has anyone else on the interview trail heard this information as yet?

Essentially Match Services has implemented a new rule whereby programs and applicants MAY inform each other if they intend to rank or not rank each other. For example, a program may inform the candidate that "I will (or will not) rank you on my rank order list" likewise we can do the same. Neither party is allowed to disclose what # on the rank list the program or applicant will be placed.

I'm very interested to know how programs plan to implement this, if at all. I personally think it's great for us; though it hurts to know a program doesn't want you, at least we'll have the opportunity to rank another program in its place.
I don't think I've seen this topic on this forum, can't find it anywhere on the match website. From documentation I've received, program directors were informed of this late September 2012.

Thoughts?

They emailed "in-house" applicants, not sure about outsiders (they don't much like outsiders here, 3/4 of our current residents are from UMC undergrad, the other is from Alabama) If you have any questions about the program, let me know.

You get great exposure to the pediatric,special needs, and medically compromised patients. Not many people know about this program, but it is a true diamond in the rough. 60+ Pediatric OR cases and 60+ Oral Conscious Sedations over the course of the year. I believe the deadline is Nov. 15th so you will have to act fast if you want to apply. The interview is in January and the program is match based. PM me if you have any specific questions as I am current a resident here.

I know LMC has Yakima, WA and San Ysidro, CA....what other programs are people aware of that are post match so we can start a list

Has anyone who interviewed at OHSU heard from them since the interview? Acceptance or rejection phone calls? I am losing sleep at night, hoping I hear some good news from them, but nothing yet.

Robin- not sure if this addresses your question or not but most pedo programs participate in the Match.. meaning you won't find out about acceptance/rejection until the match results are released. From my limited experience, most programs will not tell you directly if you will or will not get in (although I guess they could) but they may give you hints about plans to rank you or tell you to rank them highly.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious or doesnt help you.


Question: Is anyone waiting until match results to determine which state exam to take? Or does everyone just know where they want to eventually end up and is taking that exam regardless? I know we can get temporary licenses for residency but I wonder about post-residency issues with the licensing
 
OHSU has been nonmatch in the past unless they are part of match now it's a different story.

Yeah!! Have a friend who went there for dental school and loved it. I interviewed at other places- but no where were the residents/ faculty that nice and welcoming. it s expensive, but I think it s worth it. I know for me ill be much happier doing my on call rotations under the sun!:rolleyes::) Fort Lauderdale is a wonderful city too!
 
Hi everyone, do you think there's anymore interview invites this late in the game? There's been talk about 2nd rounds of interviews from Miami, Maryland, etc... anybody heard from them lately?
Some programs have started ranking applicants already for the match. I'm just wondering if there's anymore hope out there!!
