I don't know about you guys but whenever I read about specialties, no one ever seems to talk about OM Pathology or OM Pathology.

No one talks about Pediatric Dentistry as much, and ESPECIALLY not Public Health dentistry?

Why is that? Is it the money? How much do public health specialists make anyway?

I don't know about peso, but public health, radiology, and pathology is probably due to just volume. There are hardly any of those. There aren't even that many programs. Those three specialties combined graduate less than 50 people per year.

Pediatric dentistry is very popular. Many people talk about Pedo.

The other 3 - I don't think there are many spots. Probably not in high demand/need and probably don't pay very much.

OM Radiology? Why would you need that? Radiologists (medical specialty) can read plain films of the head and neck, CT scan of head, MRI of head... What would OM Radiology read? Panoramic films and bitewings? Worthless... dentists read their own panoramic films and bitewings. If you have a question about a Panoramic, OMFS can read them well enough. ENT never order panoramics.

OM Pathology? to diagnose head and neck cancer? Medical pathologists can and do read specimens to diagnose this... And I'm sure they can also diagnose the once in a lifetime oral lichen planus as well. Pemphigus/pemphigoid are also common diagnoses that medical pathologists read...

I probably felt the same way a couple years ago. But I'm not so quick to dismiss path and radiology now.

I never got the great hype about Pediatric dentistry. I know with Obamacare there has been coverage for pediatric dental care, but there has been a massive explosion of pedo residencies (like Lutheran Medical) which opens a new residency like each month. Isn't pedo going to get very very oversaturated soon?

I looked at the match data and since the year 2010 the number of spots has increased by almost 35%. There are also a lot more Pedo spots (in the match, anyway) than there are Ortho spots.

So then this is bad news for pedo, correct? It means there is going to be tons of oversaturation? Also won't the dental chains be able to just dominate the Medicaid market?

https://www.natmatch.com/dentres/aboutstats.html

From 2006 to 2014 the spots went from ~250-->400. There are probably a number of positions outside the match, too.

So the people who came out in the early 2000s, who are now making out like gangbusters, did so because of the supply-demand dynamics. I wonder how long that will last.

Thanks man. Great link!

Pedo has seen a proliferation like no other. And what are all the little orthos crying about, there hasn't been sooo many residencies opening up like they always cry about. 255 spots offered in 2006 for ortho, and now 256 offered in 2014. Orthos need to stop crying lol.

Pedo has it the WORST.

Re: Ortho--I think that a lot of the newer positions are offered outside of the match so they don't show up on that website. Also a lot of them charge obscene tuition. One saving grace of PEDO is that most of the programs pay good stipend and permit moonlighting. The exceptions are the screw-job programs like BU, Tufts, USC, NYU, etc..

most of us got into this gig for the use of our hands on a daily basis...you could do well in those two specialties without thumbs...a lot of predents love people...those two specialties rarely speak with patients...a lot of predents like money...those two specialties make the least money...almost every oral pathologist and radiologist i know works in an academic setting...most of us come out of dental school hating dschool and if you end up in academia the only way to make a decent salary and have job security is to be on a tenure track and not associate professorship...to be on the tenure track, you gotta have a lot of research... a lot of predents hate research

a lot of people talk about pedo
