Guys! with the interview season starting, any feedback from recent interviews ? and how did it go for those who has done some ?

good luck to everyone

Did anyone get an invite from UIC College of Dentistry?

Just wanted to let you know that I received and went on an interview at UIC on 7/23, there were a total of 5 applicants at the interview. In my opinion, I thought the school was great! There seems to be tremendous amount of dedication to the program from the administration and faculty, the residents very nice, close knit group and most importantly to me the program is very clinically oriented. Hoped this helped.

not really . I have been waiting for an interview call. Do you know someone who interviewed with them recently ?

Did anyone hear from UAB or OSU ?

OSU have already started inviting. They have an interview scheduled on Aug 23rd which is full and for the one on Aug 16th, they shall start inviting after their due date ie Aug 6th!

completed PASS ca 7/14, supplementals ca 7/25. Applied to GRU (MCG), UAB, UF, UNC. I already got an interview invite at UF on 8/9. I did an externship at UAB, so I'm expecting an interview there. I'm a 4th year at GRU, so I'm also expecting an interview here.
Has anybody heard from GRU or UNC for interviews?

As far as i know you have to spend the whole day at the school and later in the evenings the residents take you all out for an informal dinner so consider it as a whole day affair!
btw did u get an invite?

How is the interview like ? General resume based questions or do we have dental principle based questions as well

Curious, what is a solid number of invites to attend to be considered safe or comfortable for an acceptance?

Dont know what is wrong this year................ everything is delayed!

Are the universities offering the spots immediately after interview or are they waiting until Sept 1?
Does anybody know anything about the offers made yet ?

Most of the schools have a "gentlemen's agreement" that wont accept applicants until August 30th, in order that schools will have a chance to interview their chosen applicants that is what the Program Director at University of Maryland told me. The schools that I know that have agreed to this are: UMDNJ, Temple, Unniversity of Pittsburgh and UCONN. There are some schools that are not part or did not agree to this and have rolling admission, like UIC, and can offer you a spot at any point.

Hope this helps

You can add UF and MCG (GRU) to the list that are part of the "agreement"

I am also applying for perio this year.
Applied to UAB, UM, U Penn, UW, OHSU, Colorado, UDM
Got interviews at all of them except for UAB
I heard UAB had 70 applicants this year and they only interviewed 3 of those 70. They are looking for someone who specifically wants to pursue a career in academics later (PhD). They only have 1 spot up for grabs at this point.

Had 2 interviews already (UDM, U Penn). Both programs I liked. Questions are similar to the ones at dental school interviews except that they are about perio.

Do you mind sharing your stats? Also did they ask any clinical questions about perio?

I interviewed at UAB with another student on the same day, they also had a bunch of students a day prior to us, dont think the (only 3 interviews were true), I also dont think they are/were looking for someone who wants career in Academia. They are a very very solid clinical program with almost zero non-clinical research and most clinical research is done by faculty in faculty perio clinic. On ave 50% of students are doing masters tho.

I think when I interviewed last year they had 120 apps for 4 spots and they interviewed 20-30 people over a few weeks. One girl that graduated in in 2012 is staying to finisher her Phd but for the most part they're all very clinically focused.

Hi, if the school give acceptance letter after interview, how soon are you supposed to give response? What if you want to wait for other interviews?

There is no good answer to that. You have to make that decision.
You can say yes to that school, interview at others, get accepted at others, and then take an offer from another school and call the first school to decline.
If you say no then you lose your spot at that school with a risk of not getting any acceptances anywhere else....
This system is not designed well

UCSF or USC for Perio????
Pros/ Cons?

Don't know much about either other than what I've heard. I heard UCSF has issues keeping a stable director (which I heard from some USCF grads doing perio in SoCal). A friend of mine is in their prosth program and he said doing implants with them is an issue sometimes.

As far as USC, super expensive, and they only let you use autogenous bone, no allografts!

Thanks for your reply! But if you accept one offer and then refuse it later, do we need to take some penalties?

Thanks for the reply !

Any other info for USC? Is it a good program (despite the costs)?

Also, is any one worried about the huge loans most of us will need to take to do any Perio program? Is it possible to pay off these loans, how long does it usually take??
I spoke to a Dentist who specialised in Oral Path. He said its very possible to pay off the loans.
Would really appreciate any thoughts on this.
Thank you!
:)

i interviewed at USC. the school is nice and the director is nicer. i think its his 1st or 2nd year in charge. i guess its strong clinically and you work in conjunction with pros ...and you have a joint seminar with pros once a week. plus living in LA is quite nice .

at the end of the day all programs are more or less excellent to prepare you for a career in perio. you just need to find the program that fits you as well as hope that you can be a fit for them :)

Thank you sooo much for your advice. I guess all the programs are good. It's just figuring out where you can do well and get accepted!!!

What do you think about the loan situation? Is it possible to pay off such large amount?
