Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After you get accepted there will be bullet points under the "Thank you blah blah blah" part which will say something like "The required tuition deposit of xxx blah blah blah. Click here to proceed to payment." This is for the $250 deposit as well as the $1500 deposit (once you pay the $250 and it shows up on your checklist as received, that bullet and link goes away).
Just to clarify, will these bullet points show up prior to receiving a letter via snail mail that you have been accepted?

Depends on when you get your letter, honestly! Some people's portals updated prior to them receiving a letter (but it was obviously on its way), and others saw the portal update after receiving the letter. There's more variation in when people receive their physical letter since there are a lot of other variables in its delivery, but the portal will update if you've been accepted (whether or not you have a letter in hand).

Anyone who interviewed in March hear a response yet? I have yet to hear anything myself. Additionally, if anyone has an idea, do you think spots are still available or are the most recent interviews (end of March) probably for a wait list position?

I interviewed a few days after you and have not heard anything yet either. When i was at the interview one faculty member mentioned that we were interviewing for a spot in the class, not a waitlist spot.

Well that's good to hear for sure. Really hoping for some good news soon; honestly thought we would have heard something by now. I will say however that at the end of my interview, they were pretty adamant on it being around five weeks before we hear back so who knows! Good luck to you in hearing back!

Hey guys, I'm applying to PCOM this year and it's my #1 choice. It seems like you have to somehow stand out to the school since they get the most applications out of any DO school. I don't have much that makes me stand out in particular (when trying to prove to them that they are my first choice) aside from the fact that I've attended their open house twice. I'm trying to get an LOR from a PCOM alumni who is a DO. Thoughts? For those who got accepted did you have certain connections to the school or anything that made you stand out?

The best thing you can do for yourself is to get your secondary submitted as early as possible! Everything else is on a very individual basis since everyone has such diverse experiences...have your PS and activities reviewed by multiple people and be on top of your LOR writers, a missing or late letter could hold up your secondary from being considered complete for weeks/months.

Did anyone who got the Financial Aid Award info get anything other then the unsubsidized loan or do other awards like possible PCOM scholarships come later? I was just curious because I only received the unsubsidized loan and wondered if thats because it is all I'm getting or if the others come later.

I received a small PCOM scholarship. I believe you receive both at the same time.

PCOM deposits are due today, so hopefully there's some waitlist movement this week!

With deposits due yesterday, hopefully some of us who interviewed in March will hear back as well! I was told five weeks which is making a lot of sense now; I would assume they were waiting to get a count on deposits to release additional acceptances, etc.

Do any of you know if PCOM Admissions would be willing to talk to a caller about why they didn't receive a interview/advice

Anyone knows when was the last interview day or when is it going to be?

Did that two years ago and they told me to self assess myself, grades, scores, letters, and just plain so many applications and too few slots to fill

No word as of today. Anyone March post-interview or post-waitlist hear a response yet? I've been checking the portal, unchanged thus far. Also, is it worth calling admissions? Not how receptive they are to admission status questions via phone.

Nothing here either...I heard they won't say anything if you call. Patience is a virtue...too bad I don't have any

Yeah to be honest I believe I heard the same at one point. I guess I was just hoping someone would say otherwise! At this point my patience = anxiety unfortunately.

If the deadline was Friday, April 15, do you think the committee met today and will send decision out this Friday? They always meet on a Tuesday right?

I got the Tuesday meetings from the 2014-2015 forum. I guess I just assumed that it didn't change, hopefully it didn't

Does anyone know if PCOM takes transfer students? I was just accepted elsewhere (and I am beyond excited to be accepted and go to school there), but PCOM is still my top choice and more convenient location/money wise, so if there was a chance of transferring...

Looks like PCOM is renovating to offer on campus housing

Just got this email from our President

To the PCOM Community:

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine announced plans today to provide on-site housing for our medical and graduate students. The college has issued a request for proposals for the development and management of this housing.

In order to offer those accommodations, Overmont House, a subsidized housing facility located at 4001 Monument Road on our campus, will close as of April 30, 2017, and the building will undergo renovations to allow for this new use.

The well-being of the residents of Overmont House is of utmost importance to the College, and PCOM administration is working closely with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to ensure the smooth transition to replacement housing for the Overmont residents. Current tenants have been given more than a year’s notice in advance of the closing, and an experienced relocation specialist has been hired to work directly with residents and their families to ensure that all of their needs are met. Tenants will be offered placement in a similar building or issued a HUD voucher to assist with rent payment in a private rental facility. All moving services will be provided and paid for by Overmont House.

More details on the plans for our new medical and graduate student housing will be made available once the College has selected a developer and building plans have been solidified.

Isn't that an assisted living facility? What will the current residents do? I got the same email I completely ignored it!

My class has a transfer student but I think it's fairly rare.

Apparently it was a building originally designed to be a dorm, or at least that's what I've heard. It looks like they're working with the residents to find places for them.

Yea me too! I got my interview invite email on a Friday...hopefully good news will come again today?
My invite was a Monday and Interview was on a Wednesday. Ultimately my interview group was told five week wait and they were pretty adamant on the five weeks and probably not before so yes, hopefully today! If not I'd assume very, very soon.

Question for accepted students - is there a date by which we need to accept our financial aid?

Thanks!

Thanks!

It didn't say anything that I could find. I was confused about this as well, but I assumed just before the deadline to apply for the Grad PLUS loans? Probably would be best to call the Financial Aid office if you need to delay anything for any reason.

By the way, we have a facebook group, it might be more prudent to ask these kinds of questions on there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PCOM.DO.2020/
