Hello, new to the forums but have lurked around from time to time.

I am interested in getting into medical school. I'm in contact with my HPO at Rutgers University but wanted opinions of others as well.

To start, I have not taken the MCAT yet. I plan to around May. I realize this is a large determinant but I wanted to know how strong as of now my resume would be with what I already have. I'm going to graduate with about a 3.7 overall GPA, about 3.5 science GPA (although I plan on taking at least one or two more science courses in the summer to boost it more). I have very large amount of EMT experience on my town's rescue squad. I have worked at my hospital for over two years in escort services, so I have more than enough exposure to the whole environment and direct patient contact (I also help out nurses and techs with whatever they need as well). I never shadowed a physician because I just don't have the schedule to fit it in between work and school, but I see doctors at my job every day doing their work. I will have a year of research by the end of May, with hopefully more to follow. Tutoring in physics, bio, chem. Member of Delta Epsilon Iota honor society. I have been involved in roller skating competitively for over ten years with national medals, while being actively involved in teaching children from time to time with skating and helping out at competitions when I am available. Recently started to take up guitar. Recommendation letters from professors, job at the hospital, my skating coach, hopefully my research professor too, committee letter when I apply.

Now I understand my science GPA could be better. I feel I have a legitimate reason for why it is the way it is. I had many family issues and needed to move to my friend's house, but I also needed to take up a second job, so I was working 30 or so hours a week while being in school full time, volunteering, skating, life, and so on. I understand not all schools care about those types of things.

So my main concerns are: What are the likelihoods of even getting accepted at any med schools? Obviously I want a 30+ on the MCAT. I feel I have a strong background but my science GPA has concerned me. Any advice or honest opinions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

I really think you need shadowing. i am seeing a lot of EMT applicants this year catching hell for making a change. You need to explain why you want to make the change, and the best way to show this is with shadowing. i really feel like you need to make time for this. if you can get 50 hours before you apply, you should be set. not good enough to be selective, but good enough to get in. assuming you apply to the correct schools.

Thanks for the reply!

Actually, my interest in medical school helped lead me in the direction of volunteering as an EMT because I wanted to start exposing myself to patients and the medical field environment. EMT work was something completely out of the ordinary for me, and I had a blast jumping right into it.

I figured PS would be useful to solidify my resume. It's something that I am going to have to attempt after graduation then. Thanks for that confirmation!

Does anyone else have any opinions if there is anything else to try and do to increase my chances?
