Post your "Chance Me" threads here

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I already posted a "chance me" and thank you for the replies, but now I'm questioning whether or not to even put that I took the DAT on my application or just wait for my new scores. Does it make a difference?

Old Scores (2014):
19AA, 17TS, 21RC, 18PAT, General chemistry 15

Retake: scheduled for the end of July

Schools will see all your scores regardless. If you put on intending a retake, many schools will hold off on looking at your application until your new scores come in regardless of whether you put your old scores or not.

Hi guys,

I am very new to the process (new to the research stage lol) and just wanted to throw some feelers out to see if I could potentially be a competitive applicant GPA wise.
I have a few more pre req's to get before applying.
I'm thinking about applying to Dalhousie's Dental program for the Fall 2017 class.
I am a Dalhousie student with a cGPA is a 3.69/4.3. Just finished my third year.
I had a rough first and second year, so that is why my GPA is so low :(
First Year --> Fall: 3.42 Winter:3.54
Second Year --> Fall: 3.67 Winter:3.34
Third Year --> Fall: 4.08 Winter: 4.22
Does Dal look at students having a full course load?
I have not wrote the DAT. What is a competitive score?
Also I have no dentistry relevant shadowing experience. How many hours are a competitive amount? Or do they even focus on shadowing?

What do you suggest my next steps be?

Also for some reason I can not find a thread about the entering class of 2016? Could someone post the link for me.

Any information would be helpful! Thank you for your time!!

DAT: 24 TS/22AA/16 PAT
GPA: 3.56
Volunteering: About 50 overall
Shadowing: 80

I'm submitting my application on the 20th which is late. I'm planning to apply to all California schools and some out of state schools. Can someone chance me on the California schools?

GPA: 3.85 oGPA, 3.77 bcpGPA, 3.78 sGPA
DAT: 24 AA, 22 TS (23 Bio, 22 Chem, 21 OC), 23 Reading, 30 QR (yeah idk how that happened either), 24 PAT.
Shadowing: 265 hours
Volunteering: ~300 hours, plus ~700 EC hours for a total of ~960.
Research: 600 hours, 1 publication (independent thesis), won 1st place at a research colloquium.
Work: ~500 hours (tutor at Kaplan, Hebrew School teacher, petitioning work (summer job), human physiology TA).
Residency: OH

Submitted 6/24/16, complete w/ all LORs as of 7/9/16!

School List:
OSU
Michigan
UPenn
Harvard
UConn
Colorado

Good luck y'all :) Hoping for advice, do you think I applied to enough schools? Especially given how difficult of schools I applied to?

do you think I applied to enough schools?
Probably, but I'd add a few more. Uconn isn't exactly easy as an OOS student. Harvard is a crap shoot (but you'll probably get an interview).

Thanks so much, I figured. I was thinking, if I were going to add any, it would probably be Oregon, Case, VCU, and/or Maryland?

Don't know much about Oregon and VCU but definitely add Maryland. Great school.

I want to go into pediatric dentistry and work with special needs patients; I applied to many of these schools because they have good programs for that.

Think I have a shot at any of these schools/do I need to apply to others?

Do you all think I should retake my DAT (which would push my application to no longer being early) or should I just apply broadly? I am a Texas resident. I am planning on applying to the three Texas schools, Midwestern (AZ), Western, Tufts, and Boston U.

Thanks, guys! And good luck to everyone applying.

I think your GPA is at a sort of borderline between "solid" schools and "upper end." So, I think it depends on your DAT, which could help you and maybe open up Columbia or UPENN. What about UNE?

Should I cut some of the schools on my list or is this a good number? Money is not really a problem; I just want to make sure I get interviews and an acceptance this year as I made my decision late (graduated bachelors in Chemistry this spring) and I don't want to delay my life any longer.

UG GPA: 2.8 oGPA, 2.8 sGPA (The bane of my existence. About 10 years ago.)
MS GPA: 4.0 (One semester left at Syracuse University.)
DAT: 24AA, 23TS, 26RC, 24PAT, nothing under 22 (A retake from a 20AA which expired. I had a strenuous job at the time.)
Shadowing: 149 hrs (Mostly from a general dentist.)
Volunteering: 75 hrs (Military related.)
Research: 500 hrs (Lab technician while in undergrad.)
Work: former EOD company commander (Seven years in the army.)
Residency: WA (Just moved here, should make the 1 year cutoff by next July.)

School list:

UW (First choice since I'm living in WA now. I would consider this a reach because of my UG GPA.)
OHSU (High reach since I'm OOS. But, would like to stay in the pacific NW.)
UOP (High DAT but my UG is a mess and I've heard they look at every detail.)
Roseman (I really like what I've discovered about this program.)
Case (Alma mater, price is reasonable compared to some private schools. I like the faculty and my fiance went there for dental school.)
University of New England
LECOM
Midwestern Illinois
Midwestern AZ (Will this school outright reject me due to a sub 3 gpa?)
Tufts
Creighton
Western
UCSF

Thanks in advance for any input or constructive criticism. I've carefully considered schools based on the ADEA guide, and resources on this forum. Great stuff here. I would like to apply to 15 schools in order to maximize my chances. Of course, my first priority is to get in. I am also considering a HPSP for the VA after my first year. I have one year left on my GI bill for dental school.

Best,
-Jay

First, why did you retake on a 20AA? Did it expire?

Second, yes your UG GPA will get auto-rejected from MWU-AZ.

Third, due to your UG GPA, some advisors suggest a second Bachelors. But since your Masters GPA is good I would stick with that. I spoke to an admission counselor for one of the dental schools that stressed the Masters should be with a thesis. Don't ask me why but I guess maybe because it's more difficult and research-oriented? Idk.

Good luck with whatever you do! I'm certain you'll find yourself somewhere after this cycle.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, the 20AA was 3 years ago
I will remove MWU-AZ from my list, thanks for the heads up.
I considered routes involving more undergrad courses but I have a BS/BA in Mechanical Engineering, Biology, and Psychology. So, the amount of credit hours I would have to take to remedy that mass would be a bit more than usual. I selected my MS program (biomedical forensic science) for two reasons (other than proving I can do well academically at this point in time)- 1. another interesting subject and exposure to forensic odontology 2. back up-back up plan. Unfortunately it's not a thesis program.

Any schools I should add to the list or remove?

My stats are 18 AA, 19 TS, and 19 PAT. My college gpa(not AADSAS) is a 3.12. My AADSAS gpa with +/- are ogpa is 3.11, sgpa 3.11, BCPgpa 3.11. My AADSAS gpa w/o +/- are ogpa 3.17 sgpa 3.17 and BCP gpa 3.17. My coursework is only focusing on the hard sciences like Bio, Chem and Physics. I have taken English classes as well as humanities and my nonscience gpa is a 3.22 with +/-. I do not recall my nonscience gpa w/o +/-. Help me with the list by removing schools or adding schools. Thank you.

You do not need to retake. Sure, it will be tough and most likely get a post-december interview and acceptance. I had your similar stats and same "Work".. Don't you worry, but if you do retake... Make sure its 20+

It's tough to chance anyone without knowing the full picture. Science gpa? But that said, QR is weighted the least. I know someone who got in with your exact stats last year but had a 19 PAT - it's really a crabshoot - I would make sure everything is top notch, from the PS to the extracurricular description. Pick individuals that know you well and would write you solid letters and the rest is out of your hand. Best of luck!

Not quite sure where you heard that from. I know for a fact that Penn certainly does expect applicants to have enough shadowing to know what they are getting into. It may not be 200 hours, but 20 won't cut it.

Just wanted to jump in b/c I see your a UPenn student!

GPA: 3.79; sGPA: 3.81
Credits: Biochemistry at two 4 year universities (University of Toledo and West Virginia University)
DAT: 21AA, 21TS, 29 OC, 19 GC, 20 Bio, 19 RC, 17 QR, 21PAT,
Shadowing: 320 hrs (general dentist/orthodontist)
Volunteering: 650 hrs (Elderly care, University volunteer at basketball and football games (face painting and farm guide) Biochem student ambassador (spoke with prospective students and families about WVU), Volunteer Ortho assisting at a practice outside Pittsburgh), Operation Christmas child and several others.
Research: No research currently, but will be working in a lab this fall
Work: 1.5 years with Kaplan, waitressing, Bio supplemental instruction leader, chem tutor, Biochem TA
Leadership: Worked with Provost and President at WVU to initiate the building of a new tutoring center on campus
Residency: OH
Letter of recommendation: Orthodontist I shadowed and worked for, 3 science professors, teacher from HS that I lived with (character letter), and Committee letter from WVU.

I am applying to OSU, WVU, and that's it so far. I was wondering if I would have a shot at UPenn? Any other schools you would recommend?

Thank you!

I will retake in November. I have well over 1000 hours in dental volunteering and other community service. Pretty strong LOR as well. I conducted undergraduate research and dental research at a dental school. Earned several scholarships. My question is, will they delay to review my application until they have my new Novemrber scores ?

You have a great shot at Penn; my stats and volunteering/ECs were very similar to yours. I'd consider adding Maryland and Temple as well if you don't mind the cold. Both are great schools.

I am so bummed about that crazy low OC score. Never imagined I would have a higher QR score than orgo. I took orgo I and II sophomore year and received an A- both classes and even tutored others. Will my other average-above average scores offset that or should I retake in October? :-/ I'd hate to be so late for this cycle but I really don't want to postpone another year.
I'll be calling the schools im applying too about my low score as well:

I am so bummed about that crazy low OC score. Never imagined I would have a higher QR score than orgo. I took orgo I and II sophomore year and received an A- both classes and even tutored others. Will my other average-above average scores offset that or should I retake in October? :-/ I'd hate to be so late for this cycle but I really don't want to postpone another year.
I'll be calling the schools im applying too about my low score as well:
Tufts
BU
UNE
UConn
LECOM
Nova
Temple
Louisville
UMD
VCU
Marquette
Western

The 15 is going to really hurt you. I'd retake in October.

You have a great shot at Penn; my stats and volunteering/ECs were very similar to yours. I'd consider adding Maryland and Temple as well if you don't mind the cold. Both are great schools.

Awesome! I'm going to check them out online. Thank you again for your input and congrats on getting into Penn!

Apply to the schools that weigh RC the highest. You obviously know how to decipher through tough questions on the spot and you have the ability to read throughout dental. Apply to all the places that you would be competitive for. I've met people in interview rooms similar to your stats. You can PM me if you want to go through a list.

Penn as well? A friend of mine from school with similar stats (19 AA I believe) was accepted sometime in Feb./March.

Keep it if you want but the 18 AA is on the very bottom of their DAT range. Just be weary of that. As trivial as it may seem, there is a difference between a 19 AA and an 18 AA to admissions officers.

I totally understand.. it's significant in terms of percentile, of course. Does Penn have application minimums? I'll still be able to get my app in, right?
