Hi all,
i didn't match, i was expecting not to i guess i am not crippled with emotions.
Here are the list of sites available:
https://www.natmatch.com/cgibin/instdisp.pl

i have a question; i have a practicum site willing to take me on but the spots are limited and i have to make decision soon. At the same time i want to exhaust all possibilities by applying to phase 2 and phase 3. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation?

Thanks

A few of the sites I didn't receive interviews from have spots remaining. Some didn't even seem like they filled the slots in phase I

Does it make sense to reapply to those sites? Or after already having been told no, don't bother..

This is from the APPIC FAQ for phase II (http://www.appic.org/Match/FAQs/Applicants/Phase-II#q23):

"If you discover that a site to which you previously applied has a position available in Phase II, it is perfectly acceptable to apply again. Some sites may actually prefer applicants who previously applied, even if they weren't previously offered an interview or matched to a position."

The Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville, KY will be entering the Phase II match (we did not partipate in Phase I). This will be a fantastic opp for those great candidates who did not match in Phase I to apply for a quality (although very new) VA internship with a focus on telehealth and primary care psych. Rotations in Trauma/PTSD and Neuropsychology available as well. 3 spots will be available.
You can PM for more details or questions if you like.

For any interested applicants…telehealth is a new/growing area, particularly for more rural locations. Being able to get experience in it would look good, particularly if you are considering VA work and/or working away from major cities/towns.

I would be very honest with the site and tell them that you are applying to Phase 2 with a Match Day on March 23rd (although you'll likely know by March 1 if you have any interviews). I would tell them that you're interested in the position and want to talk to them about being flexible about confirming the spot so you can apply to Phase 2 without concern. Especially if the site is competitive than getting another prac student when/if you match in phase 2 shouldn't be a problem. And it's only a couple of extra weeks. Good luck!!!!

Apply apply apply! Maybe this phase they won't be so blind and you will get that interview/spot. :) Plus it's a great talking point that you're showing continued interest in the site aka you're committed to that specific site's training opportunities.

Anyone else thinking of sitting out Phase 2? Advice please! I'm trying to decide whether to apply to sites for Phase 2 or wait it out... I could possibly make some of the phase 2 sites work but they are not very good fits, and when I think about the sites that I did interview it is beyond disappointing. It's confusing because I received enthusiastic feedback from all of the sites that I mailed thank you emails to post-interview and my stats are pretty good (good hours, number of pubs, diverse settings, etc), so the bottom line is I just wasn't ranked high enough. The thought of waiting another year does not sound great (assuming I could even match in phase 2). Does anyone know of people that have matched to sites that they have interviewed at the previous year the next year?

THIS. I am in a rural location and thought it would suck but I actually really love it. There are several rural apa spots available. don't let the term rural dissuade you from applying.

A few years ago I matched in phase two to a site that didn't offer me an interview in phase one. According to the TD, they had gotten a record number of applications and had to eliminate some by a metric in which I compared unfavorably. But when they looked at my application in phase two, they saw I was a really good match for the position.

So, by all means apply again... it can happen.

Don't really see a lot of APA Accredited CMH sites in Phase 2. Fit might be an issue this go around.

All APA and CPA Accredited positions available for Phase 2!

If anyone wants info on the Canadian sites listed, please PM me! :)

I'd be interested in learning about how a CPA site would work in terms of licensure in california. Can I PM you about that?

Also, if anyone has any further information about the IMCES in LA or interviewed there Please PM me. That site is ideal for me in terms of location and fit, but have heard mixed responses from there.

I'm at a Canadian site (which is on the Phase II list) as an intern this year, and it sounds like many Canadian sites are opting to only interview Canadian citizens due to changes in immigration law and work permit issues. So I'd recommend you check with these sites before spending time on the applications, if you are American. Best of luck with the process!

I'm shocked at one of the Canadian sites that has spots. PM for details. It would be a great place to do your internship.

I think you could just apply in phase 2 to sites that are a good fit (if any). This is what I did last year. I applied to 4, got 1 interview, and didn't match. But I still think it's worth it to apply if there are good matches. In hindsight, I regretted not applying to more in phase 2 last year. It probably depends on other factors in your life and how it would be to delay internship a year. Also, other sites may be added in phase 2, so keep a look out just in case.

Hey all, wanted to check in with you about how you are all feeling now that the dust has settled a little bit? I was really depressed this morning but by evening i'm feeling more hopeful and determined. I've been really pleased with how supportive my supervisors and colleagues have been. Hope you are all taking care of yourselves. I just ate chinese food and am following it with a cookie.

I felt AWFUL this morning. That email hit me like a truck. I am doing a bit better too. Faculty and peers have been really wonderful. It is really difficult to not take this personally, so it definitely helps to have their support and be reminded that this isn't about you and you will still have a great career someday despite this setback.
Yum chinese food sounds good right about now, glad you are feeling a bit better too :)

Hi everyone, I wish you all the best of luck in Phase II. So sorry for this broken system. I was wondering what the protocol is for asking feedback from a site that you ranked but is now in Phase II? If my friend would want to apply to this site again in Phase II, would she be able to ask for feedback before applying? I would appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

A few of the sites I didn't receive interviews from have spots remaining. Some didn't even seem like they filled the slots in phase I

Does it make sense to reapply to those sites? Or after already having been told no, don't bother..
Definitely reapply and emphasize your fit with them!

You should DEFINITELY apply. Sometimes sites make rather arbitrary cuts at the beginning to whittle down the number of applications they receive. It is entirely possible your application was overlooked the first time for whatever reason.

I agree that demonstrating your continuing interest can be a big plus because they know you were interested from the beginning. They may have used some arbitrary cut points for interviews the first time and now they know they need to look more broadly so it is to your advantage to say you have not given up on them as a desired site.

How many applications are you hoping to send in for phase 2?
I am only applying to sites with a pdd/autism rotation. Because i can't seem to find any. I may not apply after to any place after all.

Did you see the track at the Nebraska consortium? One of the open positions is autism focused I believe. I interviewed at that consortium but not for anything autism related.

Edit: I just looked it up and it was not what I thought it was. I looked at Nebraska consortium which has an open position at Munroe Meyer. Munroe Meyer has autism/pdd but not as part of the open position. My mistake :(

yes i was disappointed too, but thanks for checking

X2, I felt I interviewed at some greats sites this year and would love to apply to them again.

Last year I interviewed at 6 places. I reapplied to 2 of those, got an interview at one, and did not match there (it was my 2 and I matched at 3). I also reapplied to 1 other site that I applied to last year that didn't interview me, and they didn't interview me again.

A peer in my program applied 2x. They applied to 1 site they interviewed at again, and did not get an interview the second time.

I know this is only anecdotal. I am sure others have different experiences.

A friend of mine interviewed at a neuro site the first year she applied and did not match at all that year. She interviewed at the same site the second year she applied, ranked it as 1 and matched there.

As for myself, I reapplied to four sites this year, was interviewed at three of them, but ranked them lower on my list than the site I matched at, so I will never know. Two of the sites remembered me and were really nice about it though.

I didn't match my first go around, but during my second year of the match I reapplied to many of the same sites I interviewed with and was invited back to interview with them. I ended up matching to the site I ranked #1 both years my second attempt at the match. So it's possible.

Hi all,

Just stopping by to convey empathy and send some encouragement. I was in your position last year and I know how you feel. I won't say everything happens for a reason (that really made me want to punch people when I was in your position) but I will say that things do work out in the end. I did not match in Phase II or post-match vacancy, but I did some things to bolster my application and went from 3 interviews last year to 13 this year and ultimately matched at my #2.

With regard to Phase II, I interviewed at the following sites and would be happy to share info, give you my impressions, etc. via PM.
Orlando VA
James Haley/Tampa VA
Central Texas VA
WellSpan Behavioral Health
SUNY at Albany (phone interview in Phase II last year, so more limited info).

I am so sorry that this happened to you. Know that we rally behind you and will support you anyway we can.

anyone apply to the UCLA or UCSD counseling centers? Interested, but would want to explore fit. PM me please

I'd be interested in learning about how a CPA site would work in terms of licensure in california. Can I PM you about that?

I am Canadian, so I'm not sure how much insight I can offer about that. I do know that APA and CPA came to an agreement that CPA is supposed to be seen as equivalent. However, that does not mean that state licensing boards or employers will treat it as such. I would try to contact your state licensing board for more info just to make sure. I know several Canadian sites that have taken Americans this past year (e.g., CAMH and Hamilton Health Sciences) so it may be good to talk to one of the interns at those sites.

Also, just wanted to add that several of the Canadian sites on the Phas II list are amazing sites and I couldn't believe they went unfilled.

Hi everyone, just dropping by to express my sympathy and solidarity. I matched, and though I'm happy on a personal level, I have a lot of frustration and anger that not all of us did. This is a problem for everyone; it's unfair that you are bearing it on your shoulders.
I wish you the VERY BEST in Phase II. Please stay strong and keep your heads up....for all of us.

Wow, there are freaking great sites in phase II.

I know a couple people who got matched to better sites in phase II than they had interviews at in phase I. Definitely keep your heads up! :)

Hi all,
I just wanted to 1st say hang in there!!! I matched in Phase I but a close friend did not so I have mixed emotions -excitement for myself as well as anger and hurt for my friend and the rest of you who are applying in Phase II. I am determined to try to be a part of some committee one day to try to help fix this broken system!!!

Also I have a question for my friend who is not an SNDer. If you applied to a site that is in Phase II and didn't get an interview, are you reapplying? And if you are, are you addressing that although you weren't initially invited for an interview you still think you are a good fit for the site (i.e. in your cover letters or essays)?

Thanks!!

UMBC counseling center has 2 openings. Feel free to PM me if you want any info about the center or the area :)

Good luck to you and your new site! I am an alum of U of L clinical psych and saw the Cardinal in your signature. Louisville is a cool town.

If you applied to a site that is in Phase II and didn't get an interview, are you reapplying?
I think that this was discussed above....scroll up. I'm not sure what people do in the cover letters though. Good luck to your friend.

Anyone have any info about the Crown Point Track at the Jesse Brown VA? Like what exact rotations are available at the Crown Point location? Can't really tell from the brochure.

Anyone have any info about the Crown Point Track at the Jesse Brown VA? Like what exact rotations are available at the Crown Point location? Can't really tell from the brochure.

I emailed the training director inquiring about this position LAST year during phase 2, so this information may be inaccurate or outdated. Below is the question and the response I received.

Me: "I am interested in applying to the Jesse Brown VA open position in Phase 2 but wanted to clarify some details. The National Matching Service listing describes the opening as "Crown Point." Would the position be exclusively at this outpatient clinic, or would that clinic be the major rotation with options to have other minor rotations?"

Training Director: "The Crown Point slot refers to the internship position that we have at our Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Crown Point, Indiana. Despite the position being primarily housed at a site separate from the home facility in Chicago, we share the same overall training program and training resources. It’s a very, very strong place to be if you have an interest in empirically-based practices, esp. in the realm of PTSD. Generally, we’re looking for someone who has interests in the aforementioned area and who is excited to be working in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic such as ours. Although some rotations that have telehealth components from the main facility may be able to be incorporated into the CP position, most here in Chicago will not. I’m going to attach for you the most recent copy of our brochure, which gives more details about our program and some greater specificity about training at Crown Point. Please let me know if you have any questions."

Thanks I see that people are reapplying but I'm really wondering about strategy.

When I went to Phase II a few years ago I didn't mention anything about why I possibly didn't match. In my cover letters I discussed and emphasized fit to their programs. (And even reapplied to a site that I had ranked during round 1, and received another interview during phase 2 and they said they were happy I reapplied) I did update my CV to reflect a table of updated hours and additional progress made in my dissertation.

I think strategy is up to the individual and what they are comfortable with, but interviews can and do happen without mentioning the mishaps of the matching process.

Good luck to everyone during this process!

This is similar to my experience last year going through Phase II and matching. I tailored the cover letters to each site as much as possible, and updated my CV to reflect some new practicum experiences (even though I couldn't update the APPIC list of hours). I think strategy is similar to Phase I: emphasize fit, including how you're a match, what else you can bring to the table, and what they can help you with.

As for talking about not matching, I didn't mention it in any cover letters, and I think it only came up at two of my interviews. So be prepared to spin it (mine was geography), but no need to come out of the gate with an explanation. They know it's a screwy system too.
