If you're leaning towards pulm, MUSC is a phenomenal place to go to. Cutting edge interventional pulm- if you choose to go down that path, you'll be signed off on stents, rigids and Ebus's..

It has to do with the less competitive nature of Pulm/cc right now. Only a few programs have the luxury of not having to deal with visa issues. Plus Baylor is in Houston and Houston isn't most peoples favorite city.

Few years ago Baylor PCCM program was going through some funding issues and internal issues.. which they seem to have resolved now. The PD and the associate PD unlike many other PCCM programs are themselves FMGs; so I guess they are are softer towards FMGs in general. It is a good program but I dont know if they are among the top few in the country or not.

Just wondering, has anyone heard from Duke or UPMC (PCCM)?

I have read the past years' reviews religiously, but missing or limited are some of the programs in which I'll be interviewing soon. Any comments, quick reviews, or thoughts on the following would be greatly appreciated!

1. UNC-Chapel Hill - I know a little about the program...so overshadowed by Duke...but hear it's great.
2. VCU/MCV - there are a couple comments about it being a quite good program, I've been impressed from what I've heard. New Critical Care Tower is pretty exciting by itself.
3. UVa - don't know a whole lot about it
4. Indiana - reviews at http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=8102448&postcount=363. Heard great things and very excited to visit and be considered
5. Case Western - read very little about this gargantuan hospital system in Cleveland, hear more about the Clinic. Any thoughts? They are part of ARDSNet, which is awesome...but what's their deal with sepsis/shock/resuscitation.
6. Baylor - attempting to make room in my rotation/schedule to interview there, feel that although the climate is the opposite of what I want, the program has strengths that are not easily ignored. Great ICU, solid pulm, and tons of places in the Texas Medical Center.

Research-wise, my interests are the multi-organ maladies...septic shock and resuscitation, ARDS management, and cystic fibrosis. More clinical than basic research. Any thoughts?

Anyone have comments/experiences (either fellowship or interview) regarding Duke's fellowship?
Adequacy of clinical training (number of months in ICU)? Intubations? Bronchs?
They are likely a research powerhouse, but wanted more info on their clinical training and opportunities to pursue advanced research training e.g. MPH.

I am starting at Duke 7/1 for PCCM. Look at my review of the program in last years thread. I obviously thought Duke had outstanding clinical and research training. Don't just think they are all about research because they are not. They definitely encourage you to pursue a research career and require almost 18 months of research but you can bet the other 18 months will be packed with top notch training including plenty of exposure to bronchs, procedures, and very sick patients transferred from all over the south and east coast for care. Also they have transplant so you will get exposure to that. I thought the faculty and fellows were incredibly nice and supportive so hopefully I will be a good fit there. Will let u know in about 6 months!!

One new program me told me that they got 140 applications for 2 positions.
Does this have more to do with the ER Graduates getting recognition to train in CCM(IM) pro grammes from last year?

I didn't interview at any of those programs, but I can tell you that Tufts, from what I saw at CHEST in Vancouver this last fall was much better represented than the rest on that list. They have a few peeps doing some really interesting clincal sepsis work.

Anyone else have an opinion?

someone asked about MSKCC pulm: fellows get involved in basic research but clinical is strong too, if you only care about lung cancer. It is a cancer hospital, you will not see anything outside of cancer, unless there is a patient with extra-pulmonary cancer and also has COPD/asthma/pulm HTN/etc. Rotations are mainly floor consults and research, fellows seemed very happy and relaxed. Fellows do ICU rotations but it is not that strong, as they do not have ER. They offer 1 year CCM after pulm for interested candidates. No sleep. In short, if you want to do some cut-throat research in lung cancer and want to pursue academics, this is the place to be, and of course if you want to live in NYC.

LSU CCM: great CCM prog, have ECMO. Fellows write CVVH orders and place bolts/PEGs/perc trachs. No CC US experience. Somehow, fellows make an extra 100k by moonlighting in the neighborhood, I find that very ironic, means the fellowship program is not busy. Their IM residency was placed on probation a few years ago, might be a reason for concern as residents do a lot of stuff in the ICU.

Tulane PCCM: Ok pulm prog, below average CC. Faculty does a lot of bench research but fellows rarely get involved. Plus point: you get to live in New Orleans.

SLU PCCM: very strong clinical prog, awesome CCM at St. John's. They have EBUS, sleep (not accredited). Fellows are worked to death and research is non-existent. I have heard most of the faculty at SLU is mentally unstable (communication and ego issues). They have an US guy who lectures at ACCP and around the country, but no formal curriculum. Plus points are: CCM at St. John's and EBUS. FELLOWS ARE NOT HAPPY.

Beth Israel, NY PCCM: very good clinical program. Lot of politics involving faculty and administration making fellows unhappy (had a friend who did PCCM there).

Maimonides, NY PCCM: it is an average PCCM prog. As someone else mentioned earlier, you will land a good job and make a decent living, but you will not know a lot.

AECOM PCCM: very good program, strong CC. Strong clinical but not a lot of research. Busy, with varied pathology.

Wash U PCCM: strong pulm and research, ok CC.

I didn't interview there, but it looks really good on paper. Very active division, lots of sick people in a county ICU, good clinical research. The hospital is kind of a crap hole though, BUT I definitely would check it out.

I keep mine in a carry on garment bag. It's usually a little wrinkled but after 15 mins of steaming in the hotel shower its as good as new.
