anyone sending thank you emails or cards? i'm thinking of sending emails at the end of my interview season to only programs i am highly interested in.

I sent a single handwritten thank you card to the PD, basically telling them I appreciated the opportunity to interview - nothing more or less. I didn't do it because I think it really helps with ranking, but because I think it's classy. I bought some decent stationary too - it didn't break the bank but it was better than you find at target or walmart . . . plus I kind of like that nice thick paper feel in my hands . . .

I saw a post about this program last year. It was very positive. However, a few months ago I remember reading someone posting difficulty regarding parking at one of the UC hospitals. Is this the one? I believe someone had recommended renting a car to get from place to place, but I don't remember if it was about UC Davis vs another UC program. What do you guys know?

Parking at Davis kinda sucks. There Is plenty of it available it is just a long way away so they have shuttles to take you to the hospital. You can walk but it would take you about 10-15 minutes. In regards to the interview day I recommend a rental car so you can drive between the Davis campus and the med center located in Sacramento. Traffic in the am is moderately bad so be sure to leave early. Good luck! It's a great program. I ranked them #2 and would have been incredibly pleased if I had matched there instead of my #1.

It is obvious that they listened to those of us that interviewed last year. I am glad because having to drive all the way to UC Davis campus in Davis CA and then come back to UCD med center sucked. I guess my info from last year is outdated so go with Aryan3!!!

Thanks for correcting the info.

I was still right about parking though. I spent 8 weeks at Davis doing some rotations and the parking was terrible. You might not have been expose to that on the interview day because they let you park in the parking garage right next to the hospital. That is the last time you will ever see that parking garage!!

I interviewed only at the last (cancelled NSLIJ and didn't get invited to NYU). So I'll comment just on BI.

I ranked BI second, after my first choice USC. I was very pleasantly surprised by BI; I had expected it to be much lower on the list. The things I found exceptional:

--Fantastic echo
--Great procedural numbers
--Good access to interventional pulmonary
--Fantastic young faculty

Reservations I had, which ultimately led to my ranking it behind USC:
--Small program
--Not really a true university program
--New program director

Ultimately my decision boiled down to whether I wanted a known quantity, with predictable numbers, a stable program, and university support versus a smaller program that was going to depend heavily on my personal interactions with a few faculty.

I am going to regret missing out on the echo experience at BI (which I think is probably superior even to NSLIJ and will put you at the forefront of the field) but great bedside echo is something you can get most places you'd look--just not necessarily from the pulmonologists. The sense I got from BI is that it is going to be a reliably great clinical program after the dust from drama of years past settles.

While I wasn't considering the exact same programs, I had to make similar considerations, and ultimately ranking known entities over a program that I found VERY attractive, but also a bit of a gamble (especially with new division chief). The gamble ended up number 4 on my list. With three known entities above.

Generally agree. UAB at the top of the list, but it's had a change in management last year and is taking a swing towards the more research orientated.

No disrespect to previous post. Due to my association with PA; I would definitely rank Albert Einstein the lowest. Dont have much regard for TJU either but it is a decent place although definitely not superior to Montefiore. I'd go:

5/6. Thomas Jefferson or Cook County
7. Albert Einstein - Philadelphia

There are many reasons why someone might get offed a position outside of the match and most likely it's probably a spot for the coming academic year. Many programs are expanding their spots. Almost any place worth going to though will match through the NRMP.

I'm not as familiar with all the programs, but maybe something like

VCU
Cincinnati
Henry Ford
The rest as you like them

Its been a while since I've posted, but I think the best way to rank is really not to ask people (unless it is the reputation that you're interested in). You really should make your rank order list according to which program you liked the most(i.e. clinical/research breakdown, people, location). I just don't think ranking a program on reputation is a good idea (I partially did that & I was worried that I would match at a more reputable program, but that I wouldn't be happy at that program because of a high research requirement)

Nonetheless,
Cincinnati is probably the best program on your list
Temple/VCU very similar (can go either way; though I believe VCU has a slightly better reputation)
Henry Ford
The rest are all fairly similar

this is pretty much similar than what i had in mind... of course I won't go necessarily by the reputation of one or other program, but also specially by which program I liked more than the others... as you can see most of them (if not all) are clinically oriented (even mainly clinical research) which is what I'm interested in... and it's true, all counts: reputation, how the interview day went, the city, the weather, clinical vs academic, type of research, wife's preferences, IP or not, etc etc

I think VCU is a great great program; and in no way close to Temple. I interviewed at Temple and VCU both. I would ranked Temple lower than most of the places on that list. Saying that the chances of getting a spot at VCU becomes less if you require visa and are not from UVa/VCU. But in general I agree with what has been said above. The ranking depends on how you felt on that particular day about the program and also what is more important to you.

UPenn has the clinical & research reputation. Wash U is also an impressive program, though both are research heavy, as is Yale. NYU is more clinical. UT-SW is probably the best program in texas, though globally not impressive. The rest of the are very similar

These are a great set of programs. The midwest generally has a great reputation for critical care/pulmonary training. That being said:

1. MUSC (almost everybody who interviewed here liked it; have yet to hear a bad thing about this program)
2. Yale (research heavy; they have jack elias who is a research guru)
3. CCF (has the name & research; not a personal favorite of mine)
4. Northwestern (used to be a PCCM powerhouse; not sure of its current position; heard there were many administrative changes; though it has a great reputation)
5. Ohio (this was a terrific place; personally thought the program & people were awesome)
6. IU (great training; very flexible)
7. Cinnci (similar to OSU/IU)
8. UAB (also similar to the above; has a higher US News rating than some of the above listed programs)
9. Emory
10. UIC
11. Tufts (more of a comfort program; though the people were nice)

Emory/Ohio State/Iowa are all similar
personally, I felt that Ohio was the best of this group
1. OSU
2. Iowa (though location may be an issue)
3. Emory (might rank higher based upon location)
4. Loyola
5. USC
6. Temple
7. UF (heard it was maligant; though last heard they are making changes)
8. UT-houston
9. Henry Ford
10. Lahey

depends what you might want to do. Private hospitals might offer great training, but if you're even considering academics, private hospitals will limit your options.
