Question about Pre-Op

Where do you get the information for deciding what to write for on pre-op orders (ie labs, meds, nursing, ...)?

I've looked through "Essentials of General Surgery", but it's not specific to the type of surgery being performed.

Is there a website with recommendations, or is this something that comes with experience?

I thought there might have been some "hard and fast" rules, but after reading uptodate.com on the "management of the preoperative patient" I have a better understanding of what you're getting at.
