Hey guys,

I wanted to explore the idea of doing an AOA approved residency in radiology. Just wondering if there are any disadvantages to going AOA vs ACGME in terms of job opportunities, fellowship, etc.

Also, as a DO how difficult would it be to match into an ACGME rads program?

Thanks for any input you all might have.

if you work hard enough anything is possible. anyone that tells you otherwise is full of it.

realistically though? (and statistically speaking) prepare to be average. dream all you want, but if you think you're going to walk into med school and just land a "x,y,z' specialty, then you're gonna have a bad time.

Contrary to what the above poster said when it comes to acgme residencies, as a DO there are quite a few things that ARE impossible no matter how hard you work.

Radiology at academic programs is extremely competitive with a proportion being impossible for a DO but community programs have become fairly uncompetitive and open to DOs.

ACGME Rads is moderately competitive, and unlike some fields that are more closed to DOs, the majority of rads programs do rank and interview DOs. If you have the scores and apply broadly, it shouldn't be a problem.

One thing to keep in mind: 50% of PDs said they don't consider the COMLEX. Now granted that likely includes the 1/3 of programs that don't consider DOs in general, but it also includes programs that do. Be sure to take USMLE Step 1, and do well on it.

I don't know much about AOA rads, but if its a shakey program that might not make it through the merger, or might pull that move that the one NYCOMEC hospital pulled where they just decided to switch all rads funding to PC and just didn't renew their rads resident contracts, I'd stay away. Hopefully someone with more AOA rads knowledge can chime in.
