Hi, I'm just wondering if Dentists need to go through the same rigourous procedure that IMGs have to, to be allowed to practice in Canada?

Yes, it is the same process and EVEN more harsh, since a great deal of Foreign-trained Dentists end up applying to dental schools and start all over again.
So if you want to get licensed in Canada, first you have to write an EE exam and after passing that you have to apply to those dental schools having Qualifying Program for Foreign-trained Dentists, and if accepted do 2 more years of schooling, you will start from the 3rd year of the regular dentistry program.

There are qualifying programs in the following universities:
University of British Columbia
Dalhousie University
University of Western Ontario
University of Toronto
University of Alberta
University of Manitoba

For more information check their websites and also:
www.acfd.ca
www.ndeb.ca

Hope that helps,
