I was reading this recent thread (see below) and thought it would be fun for every state to get involved. Explanations optional.

How would you rank the New York City med schools?

My ranking is based on what school I would attend first if hypothetically admitted to all.

State: MI

1. University of Michigan
2. Wayne State University SOM
3. Oakland University WB SOM
4. MSU CHM
5. MSU COM
6. WMUSM
7. CMU-MD

Everyone has unique perspective of their in-state schools. I was reading this recent thread (see below) and thought it would be fun for every state to get involved. None of this has to go by numbers...you can put in explanations, but I'm not requiring anything.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...-the-new-york-city-med-schools.1123465/page-2

My ranking is based on what school I would attend first (at the current time) if I was hypothetically accepted to all of them (barring tuition as a factor).

State: MI

1. University of Michigan
2. Wayne State University SOM

4. MSU CHM

Indiana
1. IUSM
2. Marion (DO)

How I wish they would break up the state school system here.

1. New Jersey Medical School

Realistically, RWJ should probably be #2 or even #1, but I absolutely hate the area it is in and would much prefer to go to NJMD or CMS.

Journalists should learn from us how to get pageviews: ask premeds to rank something, anything. Shoes, clothing, movies, video games, but especially schools they've never visited or spent any time at. Boom. Done. It's like leaving cheese out for mice; they always bite stupidly.

7. Drexel*

Not ranked because I don't know enough about DO schools (though I would probably go PCOM first of the 2)
PCOM
LECOM

*Drexel still has not let me know that I am rejected yet. Send me a damn cursory form letter saying "thanks but no thanks." You don't even have to use my name or gender; you can go with a cursory "Dear Applicant." Get your stuff together cause to not even acknowledge the hours I put into your application is downright rude.

Not new with the Drexel thing. Back when I applied in 2005 I applied to 15 schools. I never got a secondary or heard ANYTHING back from Drexel. They are the only school that didn't get back to me in any way. I think I even contacted them and didn't get a response iirc.

1. UT Southwestern
1. Baylor
3. UT Houston
4. UT San Antonio
5. UTMB
6. Texas A&M
7. Texas Tech
8. TCOM (one of the best DO schools. I personally know many people that go here/have gone here and they only have good things to say and those that have matched into residencies agree)
9. Paul Foster SOM (Texas Tech El Paso)

Don't know about Pan American or Dell, but I think Dell has potential to surpass UTH in ~10 years.

Just my personal opinion.

About #1- I am going to UTSW and I have a few friends going to Baylor and we have discussed this very topic. We agree they are essentially equal and have strengths in different areas. This is my n=4 :p

USUHS shouldn't be ranked with any others

the woes of a state with too many pre-meds and only one state medical school :/

@ChrisMack390
there is no way RWJ could be placed anywhere below NJMS. NJMS objectively blows compared to RWJ lel piscataway/nb>newark all day every day

1) KCUMB or Kirksville? Dont know which DO school would be harder to get into. I think both are some of the upper tier DO schools in the nation.

KCU (what was KCUMB lol) has a better affiliation with UMKC and KUMC and is actually focused on establishing their research side.

I had no clue Ohio had so many schools . . .

@itsogre I would take a crappy city but somewhat up and coming city 5 minutes from NYC or an absolute dump 5 minutes from Philly over just a crappy place in the middle of nowhere any day.

As I said, RWJ is probably academically the best, but I would HATE to live in New Brunswick. Also NJMS has a pretty insane match list (though I haven't looked at RWJ's).

idk man, if I had the choice between nb and newark, I wouldn't hate to live in new brunswick. I've lived in both nb and newark (and getting into NYC is nothing special tbh), and NJMS is hella run down and disorganized :/ not that RWJ doesn't have its own problems.

this is like the case of the grass is always greener... just glad I'm leaving NJ for med school.

Princeton Med>>>>>RWJ>NJMS>(Seton Hall's opening)=Cooper>Rowan-Osteo

@itsogre your favorite NJ med school is the one that doesn't exist? :nailbiting:

It's personal preference obviously, but I am very interested in high needs urban health care and I really hate the burbs so...

@Dr. Stalker I was referring to Cooper as 5 minutes from Philly (there is literally a bridge into Philly). I will be applying there for sure, mainly because I have tons of volunteer experience with the homeless and prison populations.

PS - I'm not sure what to think about Seton Hall. I know Hackensack is a great health system, but I would be in the first matriculating class ever and that makes me feel uneasy....

I've moved around so much I seriously don't have a home state, so I'll reply to a bunch of states in the order they're posted. Based on the "quality" (define how you will) of the education of each school for undergraduate medical education.

Michigan

1. UMich
2. Wayne
3. MSU CHM.
4. Oakland
5. WMU
6. CMU
7. MSUCOM
This one was pretty easy.

FL

1t. University of Miami
1t. University of Florida
3. University of South Florida
4t. University of Central Florida
5t. Florida State University
6. Florida International University
7. Florida Atlantic University
8. Nova Southeastern University
9. Lake Erie College of Medicine-Bradenton
I've replied in the FL thread. Only reason I didn't give UCF an edge is because it's relatively new.

IL
1. University of Chicago
2. Northwestern
3. UIC
4. Rush
5. Loyola
6. SIU
7. RFU
8. Midwestern (DO)

PA
1. University of Pennsylvania
2. University of Pittsburgh
3t. Jefferson
3t. Temple
5. Penn State
6. Drexel
7. Commonwealth
8. PCOM
9. LECOM

OH
1. Case Western Reserve School of Medicine
2. Ohio State University School of Medicine (though they should lose points for use of the definite article)
3. University of Cincinnati School of Medicine
4. University of Toledo School of Medicine
5. Wright State
6. Northeast Ohio Medical School
7. OU COM
NR: Cleveland Clinic. They're kinda too specialized to compare to the rest. I always forget they're not part of Case

if you want explanations, ask away

I had entirely forgotten about Boonshoft, Wright State is such a big school yet I almost never hear about it, and that's as a student at an Ohio university not too far away.

Idaho:

University of Washington (35 seats)
University of Utah (8 seats).

We don't have a medical school, but Idaho reserves a certain number of seats at each school. It actually really works out, since we have two "in-state" options, whereas most Western states only have one.

Why? Because of the lower MCAT and mission of FSU? FIU and FAU are still newer schools so that was my reasoning, although I realize both are still really good schools.
