RAVE HERE thread

Hell week (4 7am exams in a row), is OVER! :soexcited:

2 more weeks until white coat!!!
My exhausted brain totally read this as "47 exams in a row" at first and I was like...

But yay! 7 AM exams are no fun, especially multiple in a row. Good to hear that you made it through! :)

7am sounds like a new layer of evil. EVILLLLLLL
One 7am exam isn't too awful, but when you have to get up at 4 or 5 am 4 days in a row.... it becomes very old, very, very quickly.

So I've been feeling kind of lonely at school lately because I've only really made two friends so far, and then today during a class get-together to share study tips there was a lot of tension, largely due to one person that I've already complained about in the rant thread. But after I got home I had a good cry, and posted on the Facebook group for class get-togethers that basically I want us all to be a family and I want to get to know more people. A bunch of people liked my post and I already have plans to go hiking on Sunday with a girl I've barely met. :) I feel better about life now.

I may get to fly home over our "fall break" long weekend which would be the greatest thing ever! I miss home so much and Thanksgiving still feels so far away. That will hopefully help these next two weeks fly by.

A possible FB, 2 GDVs, and a hemoabdomen all walked in the door within an hours time today, it was so much fun! FB didn't need sx (in colon), 1 GDV went to sx, other went to heaven, and hemoabdomen also went to sx. Pressors for all, a platelet transfusion for the GDV, and a pRBC and plasma transfusion for the hemoabdomen! Fun things!

Took my first NBVME practice exam and it said I should pass, whoop whoop! Also halfway done with fourth year, so definitely feeling that finish line creeping up!

This sounds horrendous. Of course, we're not an emergency centre, and have limited staffing and most of our clientele are on unemployment/pension/disability with zero budget, and we don't have access to:
platelet transfusion ....pRBC...plasma transfusion
And the only pressor I think we have is epinephrine (if we have dobutamine or dopamine, I'd be really surprised...).

hahaha well until very recently, most of the ER/CC cases i've been managing have been polytraumas, wounds, neuro anything, and orthopedics which are all things i dont really enjoy. i like the metabolic/respiratory/cardiac side of ECC a lot more and have mostly just had things that i was either transferring med/onc or the above listed stuff. which is great in small doses, but after you've seen the 6th HBC in a week...ya know. also wounds are blegh.

I hate orthopedics and eyeballs....what do I keep getting? Obscure limping cases and weird eye issues.

As much as I think the breed just shouldn't exist anymore, a successful C-section and eight wriggly bulldog puppies squeaking away (mom snoring in the background) in our treatment area is pretty stinking adorable.

I've only seen one c-section but it was awesome. There was so much going on.

I loved c-sections and racing to see whose baby would start making cute noises first.

My first one was a bulldog mama too! We also inseminated her surgically to make the babies, so I got to be there from beginning to end.

We have green and warm which is great also have humidity that is terrible. I come from brown, hot, dry, and dusty though, so it's a nice change.

Previously mentioned adorable c-section, fat lab spay that went amazingly well, I probably caught a zinc responsive dermatosis second opinion case, free lunch, bosses complimented me on dealing with the last couple crazy days, we ordered clinic business cards in with my name on them (I'm official!), all my owners today were nice, AND I left half an hour early...

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get hit by a bus or something to karmically balance out the fantastic day I've had so far.

Maybe the universe is paying you back for vet school? (Different kind of bus)

I did enough ridiculously awesome stuff in vet school that I don't think it needs repaying. :p
This gives me hope as I sludge through histology at 10:30 at night when I just spent thirteen hours straight in the vet school. :dead:

Tests and studying eventually just became a dull constant throb. Helps to not gaf about grades.

But man, the highs were so high. I did the coolest things in vet school. Pulling a dog through kidney failure with dialysis... orthopedic sx on a vulture... RAVS trip to treat animals that live nowhere near vet care but whose owners love them very much... root canals on a red wolf... watching people get seeing eye dogs that you are helping to breed and ensure the health of... getting to play with drugs and a huge support system in anesthesia... watching your first (and second, and tenth, and hundredth) surgery patient recover... vet school is a lot of what you make of it, the opportunities you pursue, and just how you deal with a lot of extraneous BS to keep yourself sane. I'm in the camp that thinks it really only gets better after first year, too... second year is crazier, academically, but the initial heart attack about grades and how to study is over and you settle into a system that (usually) works.

I just realized my health insurance actually covered my rabies vaccines! I was so sure they wouldn't because I have crappy Obamacare insurance, but I realized I hadn't gotten a bill from the student health center so I checked online, and lo and behold they're all paid for! :soexcited: I was seriously dreading having to cough up $825.

Yesterday, I received two tear-jerker cards from the families of two super nice dogs who I euthanized recently. Then my office manager showed me a review written on our FB page that calls me amazing repeatedly. Then I saw a Boss Man Only client who was skeptical going in to see me, my receptionist told her she would love me, and she told the receptionist afterward that she did.

Some days this job makes me wonder why I don't just quit and get a desk job and push paper 9-5 for the rest of my life and not have to worry about all the emotional trappings of this field. And then I have a day like yesterday and I feel like it is all worth it.

Today I got to watch a necropsy from start to finish for the first time since I started working here. I love being more involved (and getting paid!), but I miss getting to shadow and just stand around and watch all the cool stuff. ;)

Also, my Millie cat is finally using the litter pan after WEEKS of angst and tears. She's been urinating inappropriately on the living room carpet (Probably she's protesting the foster girls . . . ) Tried different litters, different pans, moving her water dish, etc. Apparently potty pads have whatever magic quality she was holding out for, because now she's using the pan with them in it. I've never been so happy to see cat pee in a pan!

Has Millie ever been evaluated to r/o FIC (feline idiopathic cystitis)? She has been displaying a consistent pattern of urination on a soft horizontal surface .. and I was just wondering about FIC, that's all.

When I first got her she would urinate on my bed where the other cat sleeps. She did that 3 times, then nothing for months until the fosters came. Millie won't sleep in my room with the other cats, so she's 100% on the ground floor now. That's when the urinating started. We did a standard UA and didn't find anything abnormal, and we also did blood work, and that was all normal as well. I'm not familiar with FIC so it hasn't been on my radar at all.

It's fairly common. Also, I believe there have been behavioural studies or something done to show that cats will not urinate on things out of spite (such as in response to your fosters). Maybe someone more hip to behaviour could provide more insight on that.

Whoa. UA's that come back normal are always attributed to behavior at my hospital.

it could still be due to fosters too - if they are causing her undue stress.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to completely dismiss that! I more meant, it's not due to any kind of protest on her part although any kind of excessive stress can cause a flare up of FIC :)

Yesterday, this would've been a rant but woke up able to remain upright for longer than a minute. I don't know if anyone ever experienced Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), but I had one episode during vet school and had one last night. More nausea and strange having an onset so sudden but same vertigo. Couldn't stay upright without my world shifting. Read that chronic migraines could contribute but it's an idiopathic thing. Grateful and happy that I can sit and stand upright. The little things, yanno.

Oi.

my brother's visiting from college this weekend, and he and my parents came over here to see us/grandparents, so I convinced them to make a day of it by checking out the local reptile convention going on now. So many beautiful snakies, makes me wish I could have one...one of my teachers is also there because she breeds geckos, haha. Since we came a bit late in the afternoon we were told our admission is good for tomorrow too, so might go back again with my sister, we'll see. Sucks that my group's on kennel duty and have to worry about coming back in time for that.

My undergrad beat our biggest rival today! It was the first time in 12 years, and we totally crushed them. It also helps said rival is my brother and sisters alma mater, so I got to rub it in their faces :p

We're also first in our division!

Many cats present with signs and symptoms indicative of FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis) despite negative lab results. In those cases, it is important to methodically evaluate the health of your cat before ruling-out any underlying illnesses or disorders. In certain cases, a dx of FIC may, in fact, be rendered by default.

In those cases (where behavioral stress is not a causative factor and a dx of FIC has been delivered by default), you might want to explore different treatment options.

* For instance, it is well-reported that a diet of dry cat food can lead to urinary problems in cats. Although diet might not have anything to do with Millie's episodes of inappropriate urination, it is worth exploring further ... just in case your cat's diet is a contributing factor (and not behavioral stress, such as the presence of other cats in your home).

* Here is a website devoted to urinary problems in cats (it is written by a DVM, who is a feline medicine specialist):

http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth

* It is also important to mention that FIC (whether a diagnosis of FIC is based on positive lab results or by default) can be extremely painful for cats - and cats are notoriously reluctant to show visible signs of pain. So, if FIC is even remotely suspected, try to make sure your cat is as comfortable as possible. In other words, your cat may not be urinating on your living room carpet as a manifestation of "spite"... and "getting even" is not a natural trait in cats anyway, as noted by @Rwwilliams above. Instead, Millie may be very ill - and unlike we "speaking" human beings, Millie is unable to "tell" you in words how much her ailment might be hurting her.

* Finally, these are simply my general comments in response to your earlier posts about Millie. Of course, Millie's veterinarian is in the best position to provide expert advice, care, treatment and counsel.

Thank you.

I had multiple episodes of vertigo in high school/college and it is miserable. Glad your world is staying put :)

I feel like I should have done this more in vet school, but I made my first cast today on a live animal and it looked beautiful!! All the layers were nice and flat. Just hoping it stays on the dog now.
