I completed residency at UPMC several years ago and have to say the regional exposure was top notch. They have several fellows every year, usually from outside programs because the residents get such good training a fellowship is unnecessary. The volume of patients is huge so you certainly will have lots of practice despite the large block team (usually several fellows, 3-4 residents, 1-2 interns, a med student perhaps, and attendings). The attendings are all well trained and proficient in all blocks. You'll become an expert using ultrasound for blocks and have the opportunity to author articles and book chapters. It's busy but an enjoyable experience because of the people and the support the hospital system gives them. Call didn't seem too bad since the residents usually take first call, unless this has changed. Good luck.

Take a look at the program at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. Great program.

Does anyone know of any regional fellowships that might be appropriate for a practicing anesthesiologist that already does a lot of US regional? Looking for fellowships where you spend time in the block room or research, rather than sitting cases. Looking to build some academic credibility and find a good job in a saturated urban marketplace.
