I've been noticing the rise in number of residency programs that offer a "research residency" or significant research component. Which neurosurgical residency programs have the option for one to obtain an advanced degree (masters of PhD) during the research years of residency?
Also, are you aware of any clinical fellowships that allow the opportunity for someone to complete a PhD?

Is it pretty common for neurosurgeons to perform research during their careers?

does anyone know of the residency programs that have 2 years of research instead of 1?

Do you know of any more mid-tier, lower-tier NS residencies that offer 2 years for research?

All Neurosurgery programs are 7yrs in length, with 2 yrs of it being dedicated to research at most institutions (typically years PGY4 and PGY5), some institutions however allow you to do enfolded fellowships during these 2yrs in a sub-specialy of neurosurgery e.g. cerebrovascular, spine, peds, tumor.... if research isn't your thing... you just have to research the program you are interested in, and see which one would fit your needs.

The confusion between the 1 vs 2 yr research comes from when some programs refused to move to the 7yr program from a 6y program.... e.g. UCSF, IU, Duke..... so instead of have 1yr of research vs 2yrs.... but as of 2012...all neurosurgery residencies in the US have moved to the 7yr program.

if you look on freida it lists whether or not there is a required research rotation. Some have no requirement, some have 52 weeks, some have nearly 2 years...so you're saying all ns residencies allow for the possibility of up 2 yrs of research, but just some have specific requirements where as others you can pursue a fellowship instead?

What I said was almost accurate...but you worded it better... which is you have to go to a school that meets your requirement - not all schools will give you that 2 yr - some will only give you 1yr... they need slave labor to still operate.. and do stuff attendings don't want to do. See below at some of the variation....

Stanford: http://neurosurgery.stanford.edu/education/ProgramOverview.html (can do either, including 2yr research)

UCSD: http://neurosurgery.ucsd.edu/residency-program/ (just like stanford)

UCSF: http://neurosurgery.ucsf.edu/index.php/education_residency.html (one yr research requirement)

UTSW: http://neurosurgery.utsouthwestern.edu/html/residency.html (one yr research, but you could substitute it with fellowship)
