hi im an international student finishing medicine this year and i want to do my specialization in one of the countries that speak german since i already started learning german this summer @ goethe. i understood there is a staatsexam in germany which would waste some of time studying for it, is it the same in switzerland and austria. do i have to take the staatsexam if im only there for training.

And how does it go for specialisation do i have to apply to the university or the hospital. are there fees if it was the university and can you give me an idea about it ? and wat do i need for application
and which universities are good and can grant me acceptance easily

i found on some site that the TU in munchen is one of the best and cheapest at the same time is that info right ?

and there is one more thing some sites said there is a prespecialization period you can have willingly, can i do that if im waiting to finish my staatsexam or i need to finish the exam first and how to apply for it?

im also majoring in psychology so i had the idea of continuing psychology in some university and look for my medical options when i get there if you have an idea i would appreciate it

Hi, everyone!

I am 6-th year medical student from EU country (Romania) and it is time for me to make some decisions. I hope to continue my post graduate training in Austria, Germany or Switzerland.

I want to know the following:
1. How can I obtain a residency position (plastic surgeon or general surgeon) in Austria (Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz, Tirol) in as a foreign doctor?
2. How can I obtain a residency position (plastic surgeon or general surgeon) in Germany (Munchen, Berlin, Stuttgart) in as a foreign doctor?
3. How can I obtain a residency position (plastic surgeon or general surgeon) in Switzerland (Zurich, Lausanne, Geneve, Basel) in as a foreign doctor?

How exactly does one apply to a residency in Austria, Germany or Switzerland? Do I have to find a hospital that's recruiting? Is there a test I'd have to pass?

If someone could explain this to me, I'd really appreciated.

Thank you very much.

There is no formal residency program in Switzerland or matching system like in N. America.

  • First and foremost, you will need to speak one of the national languages fluently (not just to a C1 level but enough to practice medicine with);
  • Your degree will need to satisfy the conditions of the bilateral agreements Switzerland has with the EU;
  • Surgery is very competitive in Switzerland (especially plastic) and you will most likely need to wait a year or two before a spot opens up and even then, it's quite difficult;
  • Although a requirement, the most competitive foreign students are those that have substantial research and academic credentials. I'm thinking of students who have PhDs and/or have contributed to research papers.

My recommendation to you is this: get specialised in Romania or another European country (ideally, Western) and learn either French or German to a very high standard. Re-apply once you're specialised and get the federal recognition.
