How does your program test your knowledge to prepare you for boards/RISE? Does your program give tests of some sort based on lectures that are given? What curriculum do you have in regards to testing residents periodically to prepare you for the boards. Or is it mostly self-directed study and the only testing are the RISE exams given every year?

We toyed with little quizzes related to a few lecture series from our program director at one point, in part to get people showing up on time for them and in part to try to raise the bar a bit. For the most part, however, the RISE was the "annual" gauge of progress and personal observation by attendings was the "day-to-day" gauge. The RISE pointed out people who played the game well and somehow always seemed to look good in person, while day-to-day observation pointed out people who might have a lot of book smarts but just struggled in real life.

Many many programs "teach to the test" with the RISE and if yours doesn't you will be at a disadvantage. Many programs have conferences where residents get together and review RISE questions from the previous year. You are dealing with a stacked deck and can only hope it is stacked in your favor if your program emphasizes RISE performance.
