Hi!!
I'm from Mauritius and I have recently completed my MBBS.
Can anyone please guide me about speciality training in South Africa?
>Eligibility
>cost/fees
>entrance exam?
>Duration

Thank you

You could work in the state as a hospital general pratitioner, but MOST other countries have to rewrite each and every final exam. As for specializing in SA, I wouldn't count on it, local South Africans are not getting any posts to specialize so I deeply doubt they are going to give a post to a foreigner unless your government has some sort of agreement with ours. Sorry, I know it sucks

have you completed your internship ?

Dear Friends, Can someone provide me with the informations regarding RESIDENCY in South Africa. Your help will be highly appreciated. If possible please e-mail me on [email protected]. I am from Nepal.
Thanks

I am a South African doctor. It is difficult for a foreigner to get a training post in South Africa, there is not even enough training posts for all the South African doctors. (That said it is not impossible). Firstly you should be registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa. (www.hpcsa.co.za). Most foreign medical graduates will have to write an exam. To become a specialist you will have to do a MMed course through one of the Universities while working as a registrar in a state hospital. Course fees are not a lot compared to other countries (R10000-15000/year), but working as a registrar you will get R30000/month after tax, enough to live comfortably in SA. The best way is to first work in South Africa as a Medical Officer at a state hospital. Once you have your 'foot in the door', it would be easier to apply for a registars post. Try Africa Health Placements (www.ahp.org.za), they are a non-profit orginization recruiting doctors to work in rural hospitals in SA.

Hi Dr.

I am a newly graduated Dr from one on of the Carebbean medical schools. I live in the US but looking for a residency outside the USA. Was wondering if you could tell me more about the Test I would have to take in order to find an internship in SA. ALso, what is the difference between "medical officer" and "Registars post" and how long is residency (years). Lastly, how much is R30000 when compared to USD?

I don't know much about the test foreign graduates would have to write, you should contact the Health Professions Council of South Africa directly (www.hpcsa.co.za). (I would think its not as tough a test as foreign medical graduates have to do in the US). A Medical Officer is a doctor who is post internship but not a specialist and not in an official training post. (Basically a general practitioner in working in a state hospital.) A Registrar is somebody in an official training post and working towards becoming a specialist. (Same as a Resident in the US). Residency lasts 4-5 years, depending on the speciality. Registrars at present start at about R30000 a month after tax, (but overtime is paid extra, depending on the amount of hours you work). So in US terms you should get at least $4000 a month after tax. This is quite enough to live comfortably in South Africa.

If you just want to do your Internship in SA: Internship in South Africa is now 2 years, it is a general internship and you rotate through all the various clinical departments. Internship training time here does not count towards later speciality training and you do have to have completed your internship before applying for a registar post. Interns get paid less than registrars, but most hospitals have cheap accomodation on sight for interns and the salary is still enough to comfortably live on. (Once again best is to check the Health Professions Council site www.hpcsa.co.za)

Hi Doctor ,

I'm an Egyptian medical student , we are doing a project about how to continue your study abroad and i'd like to know the step to do that in South Africa , we need information as much as we can ,, it's related to IFMSA , thank you doctor .

Please check the Health Professions Council of South Africa's website. (www.hpcsa.co.za). Once there you will see a menu on the left. Go to the Professional Boards submenu and select medical and dental. All the information you need about registering in South Africa as a medical practitioner is there, as well as all the contact details you will need to contact the HPCSA and info on the board exams. (Just browse around the website and you will find it) For those looking for work in SA I can recommend Africa Health Placements (www.ahp.org.za), they will be able to assist you in obtaining work in some of the rural hospitals in SA.
