So with the new Step 3 starting in November 2014 (and no test dates at all in October), I am weighing the pros and cons of taking a known test (having resources known to help) rather than serving as a guinea pig to tackle an unknown beast. Thoughts?

According to USMLE, the last date to register for the old step 3 is July 18th, 2014; I graduate end of May. For those who have already taken Step 3, is a 6-week window enough time to get the necessary paperwork processed to register for the old Step 3? Maybe the USMLE folks want the 2014 graduates to all take the restructured version...

Also - one of the changes is the option to schedule each part on non-consecutive days, with no changes in the total amount of testing time. Seems like a nice option. For those who already took it, would you have taken this option if you had it, or are you happy you got it over with in 2 days?

  • See increased numbers of items that assess an expanded range of competency-based content, including foundational science essential for effective healthcare; biostatistics, epidemiology, and population health; literature interpretation; medical ethics; and patient safety
This alone would make me want to take the old step 3.

It might be easier to schedule if you can take it on non-consecutive days (you don't get just a whole lot of consecutive days off intern year), but I was quite happy to knock it out on back-to-back days.

6 weeks will likely be enough; however, the FSMB royally ****ed up my application and it took about 7 weeks.
