Retaking Courses to Boost GPA??

Ive noticed that some people post that during their year off after graduating and not getting into dental school, they raise their GPA by retaking couses. How does this work? Do the schools avg the grades, take the higher, or does this even matter at all??

It would average the, but why not just take a new course and get an A? Same thing.

Do ALL school avg them or just some? I always thought they didnt avg at all but if you retook a course because you didnt meet the 'C' minimum it was considered met.
