RN New Grad Programs

Does anyone know what the general selection process for RN New Grad Programs is? Also, what makes an applicant more competitive for a position in a RN New Grad Program?

To the best of my knowledge, schools generally use one of two approaches. Some rank applicants by scores, HESI, GPA and some system I don't fully understand (points for being male for one, an ethnic minority, from an under served community, redheaded, I have no idea). They have x slots every semester and take the top x candidates. I am told that this is the general norm.

However, I have heard that a few schools still go by entrance exam: pass and you get on a list according to date of application, and students accepted in the order that they applied. Fail and go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect $200. Seriously, if you fail, I think you can take it repeatedly.

Check with schools you are interested in and see what their process is like.
