In Italy they get about 11k euro for the year. But they also have to pay tuition during residency which is something like 2000 euro for the year (sorry I can't remember right now... but you net about 800 a month).

In Spain they get around 1200 euro a month.

In France I think they get around 2000 euro a month.

This is all off the top of my head. If you look through the individual threads on each country you will find discussions on salary.

tlew12778 youmust be talking about resident salaries, because in France the average salary of doctors is about 60 000 euros I think.

Oh yup sorry. I meant resident salaries.

I think it's a little hard to determine an average salary across the board... I mean, a GP who works off the national healthcare system will probably make a whole lot less than a specialist that works both in the hospital but also has a private practice.

Anyway USR asked for salaries during specialty-training.

Ireland:

Basic Salary for an intern is around €35k, going to around €50k basic for 39 hrs/week (35 is intern, it goes up every year and basic registrar salary which is maybe 3 years out of med school is around 50). THat salary covers the 9-5 Mon-Thurs and 9-4 on Friday. Outside of that, you are paid time + extra half rate, or sunday is doubel time.

Roughly, an intern makes 50-60k year with on call hours thrown in. Most registrars would make 70-80k doing a few on calls a month, or if you are in surgery doing 1 in 3 call you'll make 120k+. That level is rare however. Typically 3 years out of med school you should be making €80k/year with little effort (thats basic registrar at 50k, plus half again of 25k-30k for doing maybe 3 oncalls every month).

Salaries go up every year according an agreement, so you go upa grade every year, and also that new grade goes up to keep in line with national wage agreements (strong doctor's union).

That's the average for family doctors. The average for a number of specialties is quite a bit higher...especially if they're "secteur 2". But even with recently introduced salary reforms, French doctors still earn less than their British and Irish counterparts, especially for Family Medicine.

And as you can see from john182's post, Irish (and British) postgraduate trainees are very well compensated. I think they have to pay a fair bit for this training but their net earnings are still noticeably more than for French postgraduate trainees.
