I am interested in finding out more about the San Beda College of Medicine. I am aware that it is a fairly new medical school and there doesn't seem to be a great deal of information on the forum yet. Any information/comments would be very welcome, especialy from current students or foreigners who have visited the college. I am looking at applying for the next school year (2010).

I also want to see what a fantastic resource this forum has been for me and I have found it so helpful.

I visited the San Beda campus in Mendiola before I applied to medical school in the RP. Yes it is new. They have no hospital and their students rotate mostly through José Reyes Hospital (gov't) and some others. The school has faculty who also teach at near-by more established schools so the curriculum is at least "on paper" pretty close to what the other schools offer. I personally know a few students at SBC-Med b/c they used to be students 'at another' near-by medical school... I think SBC-Med is a good option for someone who would 'fit in' to their program.

As a new school it doesn't really have a reputation as yet.

There are dozens of schools in the Philippines. Why are you particularly interested in this one. You live in Malaysia? Are you Malay? Indian? Chinese? What are you looking for in a PI med school? What other schools are you considering?

Thanks for the replies. I am actually an Australian but I am currently working in Malaysia - finishing here next month and heading to the Philippines with my wife, who is a filipina.

The main reason for looking at San Beda is it is new - there is lots of information on the other schools here so I just wanted to hear a bit more about San Beda. I know the other schools are popular and why from reading the other threads.

As for me, because I am Australian and looking at returning to Australia following the completion of my degree, my requirements are a bit different from most of the students here who are interested in working in the USA, which has a different registration procedure. I have checked with the Australian Medical Council and all of the medical courses are accepted in Australia, with the addition of the AMC exam following graduation.

As for other schools, I like the look of St Luke's, but their website says that they are only accepting applicants with NMAT over 90 now.

Why not do my degree in Australia? Cost of living is a huge issue now, as well as the limited number of places for us 'mature' students. My wife is a bonded scholar and has to finish her degree first in Manila, so I thought I would take the opportunity to follow my dream of being a doctor. I will be visiting the other schools in August when I get there (except Fatima) so am very open to suggestions.

You may want to revisit the St. Luke's option as they only WISH they could get 90's on NMAT. Most schools will be lenient of foreigners except for UP and UST (these 2 have too many applicants). Aside from St. Luke's try other established schools like UERM where there are many Fil-Am students.

Thanks for the advice regarding St Luke's - I will go and talk to them as well. Will be dropping into DLSU, FEU and UERM among others.

I have always enjoyed reading through these forums - the advice given has been great and it has helped me a lot in making the decision to apply for medicine in the Philippines.

Considering you are married and u are looking for a low cost of life you may wish to consider the strong schools that do not get alot of mention on this forum. Where is your wife from in the Phils would also be a concern potentially. I would encourage you to check out the following schools. I would hate to live in Manila and do med school. Ugh, not for me. So here goes a shortlist of overlooked but awesome schools.

Baguio - Saint Louis University
Dumaguete - Silliman has a new med school. Very new but again its Silliman!
Cagayan De Oro - Check out Xavier
Cebu - The 3 schools there all worth a look for sure.

Not sure if there is a good school in Davao or not but Davao is probably the most wonderful place in the world to live in my humble opinion.

I think if you read the forums at SDN you will find a lot of information about Fatima - it has both its detractors and supporters. Each person will choose their school according to their own needs and I do not think Fatima would suit me personally - others may find that it is good for them though.

An update - I visited the Admissions Office at San Beda College yesterday and their materials state that no science subjects are now required as part of a pre-med program. I have a meeting with the Dean of Medicine tomorrow, so will post some more information as soon as I can.

My wife is a nursing grad and is also interested in Med school in a few years. I told her that if she really want it, then go for it. She's also considering San Beda which I have no problem with as San Beda will be more than 10 years old by the time she finished her med school.

After meeting with the Dean, I have some more information about San Beda. The curriculum is currently undergoing review and will be submitted to CHED next year, meaning that the new curriculum will begin either June 2010 or 2011. Curriculum is focused towards creating primary care physicians rather than specialists. Current fees are about P76000 per semester. San Beda has applied for university status. Because it doesn't have its own hospital, SBC uses a number of hospitals for clinicals, including Makati Medical Center, although MMC will probably be replaced because rich private patients apparently don't like having students prod them. Generally, I was impressed with the school, and have decided to apply there for entry next year.

Forgot to mention - from looking at the proposed new curriculum, it looks like first year will have to do some Theology subjects.

I was just accepted by San Beda for the coming school year. In addition to the NMAT, San Beda also gives you a critical thinking test as well as one of those psychometric tests. You then have an interview with the guidance counsellour which lasts about 40 minutes. Nothing particularly challenging, and I think they have decided to let you in by the time you get to the interview stage. Will post anything new (curriculum etc) after I get more information (probably after May).

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Perhaps you could shed some more information about San Beda, such as the facilities, school atmosphere, a general lay down of their curriculum (I've noticed that most schools in the Philippines have slight differences comparatively) etc. As you said your self, San Beda is a new school so perhaps sharing more info will help other applicants in deciding if San Beda is for them :)

Also, just a quick question. Have you taken the Nmat already? I'm pretty sure that there pre-unit nmat requirements aren't enforced (atleast anymore) but several years ago CEM (the company providing the NMAT) had unit requirements in order to sit the exam, which was something like 15 units bio, 9 units chemistry, 5 units physics etc.

I'm just wondering if you had heard anything about this, because whilst I know it was a requirement a few years ago I'm not sure whether it is still enforced (or if it was ever enforced). Seeing as how you just applied, I figure you'd have some of the most up to date information, hence the reason I'm asking :)

Hi Mykii

The facilities in general at San Beda seem adequate and they have a lot of newer equipment. There is some talk that university status will be awarded in the next year or so, so whether that will affect anything is something to wait for. I found the atmosphere at San Beda quite welcoming, and the campus is neat and tidy. The staff are friendly and helpful. As to the curriculum, as I mentioned before, it is undergoing development at the moment. I saw the proposed curriculum on the board in the Dean's Office while I was waiting to talk to him, but I can't remember a lot of it. I know 1st year subjects include Anatomy and Physiology, Histology, and a subject called Introduction to Clinical Practice as well as a few others, including 3 subjects in Theology. I will have a better idea when I enrol in April/May.

I took the NMAT last December. I had to show them my transcripts but there is no requirement for any science subjects. The NMAT in the Philippines can be applied for online, but I had problems with the system because it doesn't (or at least it didn't) allow you to add overseas universities. I emailed the administrators about this and the said that they were working on it, but since I am in Manila I just went to CEM and applied in person.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Fatima University is US accredited Title IV, which means if you are US citizen you can apply for loans to pursue medicine. Fatima Univeristy and Silliman University are the only accredited for that. Fatima university does clerkship in US.

Just finished enrollment and got my class schedule. Here's how it looks:

Biochem
Physiology
Gross Anatomy
Histology
Psychiatry I
Family and Community Health I
Intro to Clinics I
Bioethics I
Neuroscience I

Also have two Theology subjects on Saturday from 8-10am, but I think they are only for the first semester.

Hi.

Do you have information regarding what is the tuition fee for SY 2012-2013 1st semester in San Beda College of Medicine?

Hopefully, I could inquire there this coming April. And do they have a NMAT cut off?
Would you mind to share your experiences in San Beda Med?
Thank you. It would be a great help for me.

From the meeting ASMPH had regarding tuition fee hikes, 5% increases a year seem to be the norm. Even UERM had a 5% increase from the 2011-2012 year.

In the document, it stated San Beda's tuition currently at 85k pesos / sem.. If there is a 5% increase then.. (math here, lol, you know)

Hope this helps

hello....do you have any idea about sn beda regarding the following for sy2012-2013
1. tuition fee
2. nmat reqt
thank you :)

as they already told you in this forum, prepare for 85K pesos to 90K pesos depending on wheter there will be a 5% increase.
They are not strict with the NMAT score(as long as you take it).
