I am having a hard time deciding between doing MBA: Medical Business Assurance Program or just a Biology major. Will it become harder to major in something such as Finance and complete the Pre-Medical prerequisites? I was thinking about majoring in Biology but its a GPA destroyer. I am not sure what to do. This is like playing a game of chess without having the undo button there to assist you. Also, would M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) be better than a D.O. (Doctor of Orthopedics) aka dentist? Dentistry sounds like a good field too but opening a private practice and being independent really draws me away from it. Let me know your views.

Orthopedics-is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system.

If you are worried about the difficulty of a Biology degree then you will freak out about the difficulty of medical school. Biology will prepare you much more for the MCAT.

Also, D.O. is Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, not Doctor of Orthopedics, and even if it was Doctor of Orthopedics it still has nothing to do with dentistry but rather Orthopedics (bone injuries and such).

Good Luck.

Think of it this way. What do you want to have as a fall back option? Major in something you enjoy and CAN enjoy if you decide later on medicine or dentistry is not for you. Just my $0.02

Here you go:

MD - Doctor of medicine
DO - Doctor of osteopathic medicine
OD - Doctor of optometry
DC - Doctor of chiropractic
DPM - Doctor of podiatric medicine
DMD - Doctor of dental medicine
DDS - Doctor of dental surgery
DVM - Doctor of veterinary medicine

You can always go into academic dentistry and have a faculty practice at a dental school.

Probably not at much as you'd assume, Bio majors have on average some of lowest mcat scores as compared to other majors.

I hate HSDN. Also, calling troll (DO aka dentist). Get a BA in business and forget about anything in healthcare

This has been beaten to death but the short response to this is that most people who do "pre-med" choose biology as their major. The higher scores seen in other majors can most likely be attributed to selection bias. If you look at the table you're referring to, biology majors alone make up half of the applicants. The standard deviations are also huge, making it hard to make any actual conclusions based on that table.

^ I was going to make this point but since I'm at work on a monday during the summer I didn't have the mental/spiritual energy. Thanks.

True enough, I was just making a small rebuttal on the bases that being a biology major won't necessarily prepare you more for the mcat or guarantee you a higher score than a business major.

Likewise, which is why I went for the simplest rebuttal, if only to play devils advocate.

A business background will probably be more useful to you than a specialised biology background in residency and beyond.

Nothing will necessarily prepare you more except possibly straight up studying, so do whatever you think you'll suck least at OP (hint: majoring in search function usage will blow your gpa to ****)

I think it's a huge misconception that a science degree is required to go to medical school. Pre-med is just science based course reqs and medical schools DO NOT care what your major actually is.

The same thing is true in aviation. Most people get a degree in aviation. BUT, when they lose their medical and can't fly anymore, they have nothing to fall back on.

Do what you are interested in. If you enjoy it, you will succeed at it.
