Hey Everyone!

Like the title says, I'm shadowing my cousin, who is a general dentist. She's owns her own practice and has been practicing for 12 years now. She also attended a dental school that i'm interested in applying to, and i thought it would be great if she could write me a LOR?

I wanted to know if this could ruin my chances of getting into dental school or not?
Should i just find another general dentist to write my LOR, or stick with her?

Thanks!

Ruin? Probably not ruin, but it looks a little weird if they notice...does she even share a common last name?

She's a good start. But try to branch out. She might know of some good people to refer you to that could hopefully write you just as strong of a letter. She might be able to hook you up with some specialists too.

yes, we both share the same last name. I'm just afraid that the dental schools will look down upon me using a family member as a reference.

If there was no name shared, I'd say go for it and that they probably wouldn't notice. With the same last name, I'd say that's a no go. They'll notice and will realize it's a biased letter. I'd have her refer you to some of her dentist friends that can write you good letter.

Tell her to, as beyonce would say "put à ring on it"

Ask her to put you in contact with one of her colleagues practicing in the area and start shadowing them. Then get a letter of rec from them.

lol, at MOUTHLOVER.
@Babyblue57: that's the best route that i've been told. the only thing is that I feel bad just abandoning her lol. I mean, she's the only dentist in my family, and she's so excited that someone in the family has decided to become a dentist.

Lmao! I'm sure she'll understand lol.
