Are you sure that's correct? I thought the number one medical school would have an average board score of 300. If not, it's more likely to be around 280.

UChicago.. 217.. what!?

what was the national average last year?

vandy said their average last yr was 243:eek:

Are you guys sure of a lot of these? They seem awfully awfully high in general....Maybe I just feel that way because Georgetown isn't in the 230's :D. But I have seen its avg. score in writing from an official memo from the administration given to tour guides. Are most of these other scores in writing or just hearsay? Especially these schools with whopping scores of >237-238.

USC's Step I average is actually 233. I saw this in print.

I think IU's Step I average from last year was 230 (stat they gave out during the interview day).

NYU's Step I is in the 220s.. 224 I think

Out of all the schools I know, UCI has their curriculum set up so that thier students would get the highest average board scores. They are Honors/Pass/Fail, so that you would get the competition from the majority of the class, even the slackers. They take the shelf exams, which are written by the same people who brought you the boards (this also would make sure they are studying the stuff that is most tested) Now, if they gave their students a ton of time to study and gave $$$ to the top scorers, they could be up there.

Eh this is kind of backwards. We are told that the last time anyone checked we had the highest average in CALIFORNIA. NOT THE NATION. And a good part of that is that we host a Kaplan course on campus in the 2 months we are given to study- helps a lot.

As far as the curriculum. H/P/F doesn't breed competition, and I'm not sure why you think it would. Generally only 10% of the class gets honors in any given class and in the end it takes up a teeny tiny paragraph of your two page deans' letter than notes that so and so honored such and such class in basic science years. So 10% are gunners and the rest of us do what we need to to learn the material but the fact of the matter is a 70 is the same as an 89 so it definitely doesn't breed competition. Very crammable if you're stupid and feel like doing that.

We only take 2 shelves first year. And they sort of teach to the boards second year but since everything is more conceptual first year they focus on that. We do take shelf exams for all three subjects second year but in 2 years that's only 5 shelf exams. Other schools take shelf exams for all their classes.

We definitely do well, but just wanted to clear up some of the rumors in this thread :)

The problem with these numbers is that some schools only release averages of their passing scores. Say 150 people take Step 1 and 15 don't pass the first time. On the second round of Step 1, those people people pass. Some schools will use ONLY the better (passing) score. If 15 people improved their scores from 180 to 210 even, that could be a significant difference. It looks even better on paper to have only a "passing average" when multiple students needed a couple of attempts to pass Step 1.

There is no regulating body to releasing Step 1 scores by school, so there is no need to be fully honest with scores. I've seen schools "fudging" numbers quite well.

This list doesn't look terribly accurate... some of the schools have the same averages as they did on the first page of this thread...which was over 5 years ago.

what is the source for that new sinai average of 234?

As has been posted so many times, the USLME STEP 1 scores are not given out, but rather individual schools give them out if they feel like it (usually at interviews). If you remember what the STEP 1 scores were for the particular school you interviewed at, post it on here and we can start making a compilation. Only post if you're absolutely certain of the score...no "I think it was...".

Unless otherwise noted, these are last year's scores:

National Average 216 (SD =23) *2002

Where are you getting your info? In 2007 Keck's Step 1 average was 233 not 220 (that's from 2003). I doubt it dropped 13 points, b/c prior to that it was on a very steady increase since implementation of the new curriculum.

Oh, I see somebody else already corrected it. Hey, OP, why don't you take your own advice and no " I think it was..."
This is the exact problem with these kinds of topics. I wouldn't split hairs over 2 pts, but 13 is a big difference, and people may be influenced to pick a school based on this ridiculousness!

but I guess it's b/c they are from different years, right? So nearly every school has been below the national mean as well?

How modern/accurate is Mount Sinai's, anyone know?

This is a worthless way to compare schools.

QFT

What is Stewart Univ? I've never heard of this one, sounds fishy. I've heard the Univ Above the Stairs average is 270 and all their students match in derm, plastics and rad onc. I've also heard from a friend of friend who dated this med student that dated a nurse that knows a clinic secretary that LD is the most pimp.

The score for the University of Chicago, 217, seems much lower than I would have expected. Also, the score for Washington University, 235, strikes me as low as well, given that Wash U students are stat freaks. It makes me wonder how accurate these scores really are.

But, as Garrison Keller said, all the children in our town are above average.

Updated Georgetown's current Step 1 average (this year our average was a 227, last year it was a 224). We had a few more fail this year then in general (~6%) which I first found concerning, but googling pass rates for other medical schools, I noticed that some years are "off years" and that pass rates can fluctuate. Without the fails, our average is in the mid 230s (233-235). I wonder if some if these extremely high averages that people are posting are given by the administration after they remove the fails....hmmmm. I would really take some of these extremely high step scores with a grain of salt. ~47% of our class scored above a 230, and 23% scored above a 240. 11% above a 250, and 3% scored above a 260 (thats like 6 people!).

That's right, be impressed ;)

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT WASHU IS NOT THE HIGHEST!!!

that's right, WashU managed to recruit students with the highest standardized test taking ability and result in an average USMLE score of 235, while not a bad score, considering their MCAT average is like 38 or 39, 99% percentile.

And I am very surprised by the high avg step 1 score of Duke, consider that that have the entire basic science education condensed into 1 year.

I want to see some updated scores for Northwestern...If anyone has their hands on this info please post

eh, the thing is, so many schools are shortening their preclinical curricula because they're starting to realize that 2 years is longer than necessary. so while duke is pretty condensed, their students aren't really at a significant disadvantage. I think the 1.5 year preclinical curriculum is really the way to go, and a lot of schools seem to be moving towards that (Baylor, Penn, and now apparently Hopkins, among others), without sacrificing Step 1 performance.

Even if schools like Duke have the brightest students, maybe 1 year of basic sciences is not enough.

Well, apparently it's more than enough for Step 1.

And I'm guessing most Duke Med alumni are doing fine...

Don't forget though that Duke students have a couple of advantages:

1) they take Step 1 after their clinical year, which apparently does help somewhat to put the basic science stuff into clinical perspective. It's easier to remember why a random disease happens a certain way when you've met patients with said disease.

2) they take Step I during their research year, which is very, very unstructured and entirely dependent on the student. I have a couple of friends at Duke and they told me that while they did feel like they were behind on the science compared to people in other schools, they got to ask their research mentors to give them maybe a couple of months to study full-time plus some part-time study time, which is huge. At most schools, you get 4-6 weeks and then you're a third year and you don't have time to study anymore. At Duke, you can figure that timing out on your own and really learn stuff independently. That can be either good or bad, I guess.

Especially these schools with whopping scores of >237-238.

i think these are inflated since I was told that schools are not given their average step1 scores but instead have to have their students self report them.
