Successful Applicant Stats - Class of 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello, everyone I'm a 1st time applicant from California. I just finished Bachelors in Biological sciences and am looking forward to the nice break before heading to vet school!
Male 21

Applied: UC Davis, Cornell, CSU, WSU, Oregon State, Ohio State, Western, Midwestern
Rejected: Cornell, CSU, WSU
Interviewed: UC Davis, Ohio state, Western, Midwestern
Waitlisted: UC Davis
Accepted: Ohio state, Western, Midwestern, Oregon state

Overall GPA: 3.73
Science GPA: 3.67
Last 45: 3.89

GRE: (Quant,Verbal,Writing):
157,150,4.5 (I would recommend to anyone in the future to aim for a better verbal score. It affected me more than I realized as WSU and CSU said it was the only reason for my rejection).

380 Hours as a junior technician at specialty hospital (Paid)
330 hours shadowing Holistic Vet
240 hours interning with Research veterinarian
100 hours internship from HS
6 hours monitoring anesthesia of pigs

Dean's Honor list x7
Sportsmanship Award
Varsity Coaches Award
Outstanding Track Award
Best Junior Handler
Coaches Award JV Cross Country
Junior handle Award of Merit

LORs:
Research Vet
Holistic Vet
Ochem professor

Personal Statement:
I wrote about how I was not the typical person wanting to become a veterinarian since they were a kid and talked about how a dramatic event with my dog made me see that I wanted to give back to society as a veterinarian. I talked about how my experiences shaped me and only further confirmed my goal to become a Veterinarian.

My personal advice is for anyone applying that thinks they are lacking in something is to stay positive. You never know what could happen. I have friends that got accepted to places I didn't with lower GPA's or whatever but its all a random chance in the end!

To everyone else already accepted: good luck to you all and I hope you all have great time in Vet school!

Personal statement:

Going in, I thought my stats were awful so I was determined to have an eye catching personal statement. I talked about my fascination with dead animals as a kid and how I would bring home dead rabbits, birds, and squirrels and dissect them (seriously I did) and went from there describing my interest for animal medicine and science in general and how I thought it was intrinsic. Also talked about my animal experiences, and talked quite a bit on allllll my extra involvements and how I thought being so busy in undergrad (2 jobs, 2 college sports, clubs, volunteer work, and rigorous biology courses!) has more than prepared me for the extremely tough academic setting in vet school.

In my interview all of the interviewers commented on the strength of application due to my outside involvements and seemed to be impressed that I handled all of it while still maintaining a good GPA. Assuming they overlooked my bad GRE score because of those things :).

SO if your applying I encourage you to be sure to list all your involvements on your application to show schools you can handle time management, stress, and pressure, and if your not as involved right now, get at it!! Good luck to all applying next cycle! :)

Seriously did not think this day would come, but I finally get to write on this thread!!! Definitely think my stats are pretty darn average, so I hope it gives some future applicants peace of mind.

Personal Statement
I focused my personal statement on how I heard a presentation from a vet at the Indy Zoo and how I one day wanted the opportunity to work with her. I used my experiences as a springboard for how I was to get enough experience to be a viable candidate for an internship at the zoo's hospital. I went through the main experiences that led me to the zoo, and I focused on how much I learned from the zoo's vet once I worked with her, specifically while observing necropsies. Throughout my personal statement, I incorporated my love for exotic animal medicine, which ultimately led me to want to and get the opportunity to work with the Indy Zoo veterinarian.

SO thankful that I am finally a vet student! Congrats to all those who have gotten good news and good luck to those still waiting to hear!

Congrats to everyone posting here! It still doesn't feel real yet, but maybe after I post it will! I definitely applied to too many schools, but I had below average everything and was honestly not expecting to hear back from even one school.

LORs/PPI:
Molecular/Developmental Bio Professor
Veterinarian at SA clinic
Veterinarian at Zoo

Personal Statement:
I worked on my statement for around 2 months and had around 10 people read it and give me feedback. I made sure the reviewers knew vet school was my choice, not med school because of my career change in the middle of college. I used my biggest weakness, compassion, and turned it into a strength. I also brought new perspective into typical Western medicine from my time at the Taipei Zoo. As for my low GPA, I didn't address it at all mainly because I was hoping they would see the upwards trend!

I know when I was reading the stats I was very discouraged with all the high GPAs and GRE scores. But really play up your strengths and do your research on every school you want to apply to. Good luck!

Just curious if you only took prereqs then applied?

Nope. I planned on getting my Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology and a minor in Animal Science, but then I randomly decided to apply early because I just so happened to have most of my prereqs done. I think my application stood out because I have taken so many additional science-y classes in addition to "just the prereqs". For example: Medical Entomology, Virology, Pathology, Medical Microbiology, Swine Science, Prokaryotic Diversity, Honors Immunology, and Leadership classes.

I hope this helps someone :) I didn't have a ton of veterinary experience....like definitely under 500 hours. I think I did well mostly because my grades and GRE were good and the little veterinary experience that I did have was....weird.

I promised that if I got accepted that I would post one of these because I have pretty bad grades and these postings used to give me hope haha.

23 y.o. male 1st time applicant VA resident
Major- B.S. Biology

Applied- VMRCVM and MWU
Interviewed- MWU
Accepted and Attending- MWU :)

GPA: 2.98 (looks pretty bad but grades aren't everything)
Science GPA: 3.0 (I think)
GRE: (Q/V/W) 150/163/3.5

Vet Experience:
Small Animal 24 hr emergency clinic/specialty referral center- 2160 hrs (veterinary assistant)
Small Animal GP: 960 hrs (veterinary assistant)
Lab animal medicine: 400 hrs (veterinary technician)

Animal Experience:
Horse back riding instructor/Barn staff at a summer camp: 792 hrs

Research Experience:
~1000 hrs Studying the effects of an invasive parasite on the American eel. Identified first known vector of this parasite in the US and presented findings to South Eastern Society of Parasitologists.

Extracurriculars:
Spent most of my time outside of class working at the vet hospital.

Personal Statement:
This is most likely what got me an interview. I wrote about the kind of veterinarian I want to be which is one who looks at the big picture of human, animal and environmental health (One Health). I talked about how I want to use the skills that I will acquire in school to serve my community on the local, national or even global scale. I described my background in ecological research and clinical medicine and how together they have given me a unique view of medicine. Overall i tried to make myself stand out as much as possible!

Explanation Statement:
Had to include one of these to explain that GPA. I struggle with pretty bad ADD but didn't want to take medications when I was younger because of the side effects. I did fine throughout high school and ok my first year of college but once i started taking more courses and started working part time I just couldnt keep up and my grades tanked. I explained that I made the decision to seek help and after about a year of trying different meds, found one that worked for me. After I got the help I needed my grades started to improve. Unfortunately its very easy for your GPA to tank but nearly impossible to bring it back up. I went from a 3.3 my freshman year to a 2.6 at the end of my sophomore year haha.

Hope this helps anyone who is having doubts about their grades. You can still get in! Just prove that you are dedicated to the field and find ways to make yourself stand out!

Just thought I would mention this funny anecdote. I was at the White House when I got my two denial e-mails from schools. I was invited due to my accomplishments. I sat next to Jamie Foxx even!! The irony was hilarious. Who gets invited to the White House and denied entry into vet school?

Such is the reality of veterinary school. Sometimes it seems like there really is no rhyme or reason to it.

Congratulations on everything you've done! And it sounds like you're just getting started - what an amazing story.

I'm a very non-traditional student...I wanted to post my info in the hopes that I could give some encouragement to others in shoes similar to mine! :)

I am a married 33 year old mother of 2 boys (ages 13 & 3). This was my first time applying for vet school and I was super nervous! I am currently majoring in Microbiology & Cell Science and minoring in Entomology and Nematology at UF (I'm actually a distance student). I will be finished with my program this summer. I never thought I'd even get that far! I finished my AA in 2006 and wasn't able to return to school until 2012! Now I'm going to be starting vet school in the fall!

Applied: UF (IS), UGA & UTK
Interviewed: UF & UTK, UGA doesn't do interviews.
Rejected: UF, after interviewing (I think I was too honest!)
Waitlisted: UGA & UTK
Accepted/Attending: UGA & UTK, Attending UGA! :D

GPA: ~3.69
Science GPA: ~3.57
Last 45: Not sure, but around 3.59? Different schools calculate it differently (part-time vs full-time, etc).
GRE: 153 V, 150 Q, 4 or 4.5 W (can't remember off the top of my head)

Vet Experience
I worked as a full-time vet tech ~5 years. Mostly in small animal clinics.
I also worked at an animal shelter briefly.

Animal Experience
I worked at PetSmart (with the animals they sold) for about 1.5 years.
My in-laws owned a bird breeding business (mostly African Greys and Eclectus) for a few years.
I also used to rescue animals, usually from people that relinquished them to me at work. Mostly bully breed dogs.
Then of course there's pet ownership experience, which I have plenty of! :)

Employment
In addition to my vet work experience I listed above, I've held numerous customer service (call center), retail, temp jobs, etc. I've worked since I was 16, so I've had a fair share of jobs! LOL

Extracurriculars
Pretty much anything to do with my family...hiking, boating, etc.
I'm obsessed with my freshwater aquariums. I keep both fish and shrimp!

LORs
2 from veterinarians I worked with for almost 3 years.
1 from my microbiology lab professor at UF.

Hi there! Congratulations on being accepted!

I had a question for you if you don't mind. You write that you had 10 hours shadowing am equine vet. In your interview, what question did they ask about it? You mention how it was a good thing in their end hearing about this.

Thanks!

I haven't heard back from all of my schools yet, but I figured I'd post here. There is hope for anyone who feels they are in the 'average' area of GPA/GRE!

23 year old, female, MI resident, BS in Zoology, concentration in Zoo and Aquarium Science. Second time applicant. Last year, I applied to five schools and was flat out rejected by all. This year, I dropped to three of the same schools from last year and followed most of the file review advice. I entered this cycle expecting another round of rejections and wondering if I should have just waited so I could collect more experience hours, but I'm glad I didn't.

Applied: Michigan, Florida, Illinois
Interview: Michigan, Florida, Illinois
Wait-listed: Florida
Rejected: Michigan
Accepted: Illinois
Attending: Illinois!

GPA: 3.61
Last 45: To be honest, I don't have a number. I'll estimate that it's in the neighborhood of 3.5-3.6.
Science GPA: Depends on the school.....Michigan had me at a 3.2 last year (no significant changes were made), Illinois has me at a 3.48 this year.
GRE (Q/V/W): 158/154/4.5 (I did retake, and decreased all of my scores slightly, so I elected to only send out my first attempt)

Veterinary Experience:
500 hours as Walt Disney World's wildlife intern at time of application (responsible for all injured/orphaned/relocating wildlife on Disney property; assisting during zoo animal procedures)
10 hours shadowing equine vets (I questioned if I should even bother listing this, but it came up in an interview as a good thing)
500 hours as SA vet assistant (at time of application)
115 hours working with vet at a wildlife rehab center
260 hours as SA receptionist
6 hours shadowing SA vet (waaaay back in the day....I listed everything this year)

Research Experience:
400 hours collecting data at the Detroit Zoo regarding collection animal welfare (exhibit use, social interactions, sterotypy, etc)
*For my first application, I listed a class project I designed and completed regarding the nutrient requirements of bacteria found in local rivers. I did not list it this year due to VMCAS guidelines*

Animal Experience:
4 hours being trained to exercise pregnant sows for a project (this project was cancelled due to PED, but would have resulted in a more significant contribution to my app)
48 hours evaluating body scores, judging meat, taking temps on horses/dairy, brief exams on horse hooves, and using balling guns on cows (classroom experience, elected to list this)
40 hours raising broiler chickens for a class project (we designed their diets and cared for them daily)
55 hours showing dairy and horses for a novice show put on by a school club-I mentioned I was awarded third place in the horse showing
260 hours as amphibian department intern at Detroit Zoo-provided daily husbandry including meds; exhibit design and building

Employment Experience:
A lottttt of hours at a campus dining hall as a student supervisor-I cited this as leadership experience
1000+ hours as a child care provider

Community Experience:
I listed everything, including high school activities.

Awards:

Dean’s List, scholarships, and I listed my high school awards as well

eLORS:
Zoology adviser
Zoo vet at Disney
SA vet I had the most hours with
Dining Hall manager

Personal statement:
I kind of just updated my essay from last year since all of my file reviews complimented my writing style and content. I have a hook as the first sentence of my statement, and I highly recommend trying to capture your readers with your first sentence. Illinois spent a good 10 minutes telling me that my essay was actually enjoyable to read. Avoid the "I've wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I was five" introduction if you can.

I kind of walked the reader through my life and how I had a desire to learn more about vet med at each stage and how I got my experience. I emphasized my compassion by touching on how I frequently dealt with geriatric patients at one of my clinics, talked about how I improved my second app, and why I want to be a DVM. I finished up with a quote from the veterinarian that euthanized my guinea pig, which is a quote that continues to inspire me. I did my best to show the reader that I'd be a good choice, and that I knew what being a veterinarian was about.
Hi

Hi there! Congratulations on being accepted!

I had a question for you if you don't mind. You write that you had 10 hours shadowing am equine vet. In your interview, what question did they ask about it? You mention how it was a good thing in their end hearing about this.

Thanks!

Hi
Thanks! Only one school mentioned it (UF), but I should note that UF is the only school I applied to that did open-file interviews. They pretty much said I covered my bases and that I had impressive experience, and said it was good I made the extra effort to find equine experience. They didn't ask me much else about it. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your info! I was considering doing the same getting maybe 20 hours in some areas to add onto my experience, but then it seemed so little. I guess some in one area is better than none! Thanks!

I was asked in one of my interviews about why I only had 5 hours listed as LA experience, but I got to explain how the one case I observed really impacted me and challenged me to make sure that this was the field I wanted to go into (it was a somewhat emotionally traumatic case). They seemed pretty satisfied with my answer. I also used the experience to open my personal statement. So really just make sure you pay attention and really learn something you can talk about later, regardless of how many hours you got out of it. :)

Great, thank you! I have mostly small animal, shelter med, some large animal, getting wildlife experience this summer, I also rode horses for three years so I will put that on there. However I wanted more horse experience actually working with them, so I was planning on getting it in this summer before I turn in my applications this summer.

So nervous!

Thank you for your help!

Hi there! I see that you only applied to one school, i'm kind of in the same boat with you because I really only want to go to one school. Did the reviews end up asking you why you only applied to one school? Just wondering for my pierce of mind since I may be doing the same this summer.. I wonder if they see it as a good thing or a bad thing.

Hi there, could you just personal message people with questions? This page starts to get really bogged up otherwise and then it's harder for people to see the actual stats posts. :) please and thanks!

Don't quote me on this though, I'm utterly grateful to the schools that interviewed me with what I believed to be a shoddy Q score! Hi Everyone, I've been a lurker for a long time but decided to post because I am a totally non-traditional student AND I'm old (44 yrs old-hurts to write that because I do not feel that old!). So never give up on your dream :) Still pinching myself.

So, 44 yr old female, New York State resident, first time applicant

Applied: Cornell, Tufts, Missouri, Colorado, Lincoln Memorial, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Ross
Interview: Lincoln Memorial, Tennessee, Ross (declined it because I got in at LMU)
Waitlisted: Cornell, Tennessee, Wisconsin
Accepted: Lincoln Memorial, Tennessee, Wisconsin
Attending:

Overall GPA: 3.54
Science GPA: Ugh, not sure, most of my classes were science pre-reqs because I already had the gen-ed classes
Last 45: Probably about 3.4

GRE: V: 169/Q: 147 (Yes I know it's awful, but I only had one week to prepare and no time for a retake)/W: 5

Degrees:
AS in Veterinary Technology; BS in Natural Science with a Health Science specialty

Veterinary Experience:
14 years as an LVT working in a shelter, small animal practice, and for two board certified avian vets, and an exotics only practice
Board of Directors for local SPCA
Licensed Educator with National House Rabbit Society for 20 yrs (yes, there is such a thing!)
Lots of volunteer work with TNR and low cost spay/neuter programs
Countless hours of volunteering in all capacities at my local SPCA
Fostering more animals than I can count
Farm animal experience from tech school and from the barn at the SPCA
Lab assistant for the pathology/exotics lab at the local college for Vet Techs

Research Experience: Ethogram on foraging in captive Dasyprocta leporina (agoutis)

Extracurricular Activities/Awards:
3 plus years Krav Maga and Muay Thai kickboxing, achieved one belt below black belt
Escort for local women's clinic
Rabbit rescue, including assisting law enforcement, and education
Board of Directors for SPCA (not the one I worked for, a different one)
Dean's List most semesters

LORs:
Vet I worked with at the SPCA
Executive Director of the SPCA where I worked
Two of my upper level science professors (both Biology professors)
The two vets where I am currently employed (have worked with the one vet for over ten years-we moved together lol)

Personal Statement: My one professor said my statement brought tears to her eyes, so yes, I did get personal and spoke from the heart. However, my statement did show a logical progression as to why I decided to pursue becoming a vet after being a technician for so long. I was honest and didn't sugar coat things, and I said what I felt I could bring to the table and how I had proven myself in the field.

I'm leaning toward Tennessee for sure. I just got called off the waitlist this week for Wisconsin and I was pretty shocked because I was really far back on the waitlist, so I have some serious thinking to do this weekend :)

Congratulations!! So amazing! What made you want to become a Vet after being a technician for so long?

Wow, @moxshorpun, for a second I thought I wrote this! You totally lost me at Krav Maga though, lol. I'm 45 years old and have been an RVT for 12 years . I'm glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to make the change this late in the game. I was hoping you were going to say you were going to Mizzou with me! Congratulations and thanks for posting!

Some of the vets I worked for early on had actually encouraged me to go back to school and apply, but I never thought I was smart enough. I was in a situation when I was on the board for the SPCA where we were always begging for vets to do the shelter work (Even though we paid them it was still hard to find vets who wanted to do it), and it was so frustrating. I thought "why not me?" I figured I had to try, and here I am. My first love has always been shelter medicine.

I was accepted this cycle, but I deferred a year so I'm technically going to be in the class of 2020. Anyway, I'm a first time applicant. Graduated this month. :)

Applied: UGA, NCSU, LSU, Mississippi State
Interviewed: Offered an interview at LSU and Miss. State, but ended up turning down both
Rejected: NCSU
Waitlisted: N/A
Accepted: UGA
Attending: UGA

Vet Experience
~500+ hours of experience in small animal practice

Animal Experience
Don't remember exact numbers, but I had experience from animal science labs with beef, swine, horses, dairy cattle, and some poultry and sheep experience.

Employment
Worked at a vet clinic every summer, except the one between freshman and sophomore year. Also had two work study jobs - one in the Biology department and the other I was a stockroom assistant for the Organic Chemistry teaching labs.

Extracurriculars
Served as treasurer and then president of my school's secular student club.

LORs
1 from a vet at my clinic who had known me the longest
1 from the practice manager of the above clinic
1 from the professor that supervised me in my job in the organic labs

How did Tufts and Cornell NOT give you an interview?!? Do you mind me asking where you attended undergrad?

Does anyone know how the UF admission looks at GPA, GRE, Experience, LORs, etc. ?

For example, if everything was above average but GRE was below average, would that be a deal breaker?

How did Tufts and Cornell NOT give you an interview?!? Do you mind me asking where you attended undergrad?

I did not attend any school that contained "ivy" ;) In all seriousness, I attended JMU for my first degree, and for my second degree - the biology one, the #10 small public liberal arts college in the country, MCLA. Neither school had heard of it though when I went for tours and such, so I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get into either anyway. All in all, there's no real way to tell "why" one school does or does not give you an interview (Cornell actually doesn't have them, they have an extensive supplemental app). I also didn't get interviews at LSU or Missouri. But, as I've noticed throughout the years, everything truly does happen for a reason - The second I walked onto the campus of UTK, I knew I belonged there. :soexcited:

Thank you for your confidence though! I do think this is a great illustration of how the process can seem kind of random - you get an interview here, but not there - you know what I mean?

You had mentioned that you were willing to send - I could really use some guidelines because I feel like I always want to edit my responses to improve them lol - driving myself bonkers)

Best,
kim

I hope that my stats will inspire future applicants to apply despite low veterinary experience hours and OK academics/GRE. It IS possible!!! I applied to DVM and DVM/PhD programs.

22 yr old female NY resident, 1st time applicant.

Applied: Auburn, Cornell, CSU, Illinois, Minnesota, Mississippi, Mizzou, Penn, Tufts, VMRCVM

Vet from house calls/small animal clinic
Gen chem professor (also is my departmental major advisor)
Coordinator / advisor of my research program
Research PI at my institution
Research PI at Cornell
Research PI at Penn

Personal Statement:
I focused on my research/vet experiences throughout undergrad in a chronological manner, with memorable instances/take-home messages from each experience. Since the bulk of my experience was research-heavy, the challenge for me was to avoid coming off as an applicant who should only pursue a PhD.

Explanation Statement:
Although optional, I wrote an explanation statement that discussed my transition from art to science (this was suggested by someone on a vet school committee because he thought this was very interesting about me and would let me stand out). Basically, I was in an art program during high school and got accepted into a top art school with scholarship - but at the end of the day, I chose to attend a liberal arts college and to pursue a career in science/medicine because I wanted to learn more science and challenge myself in such a rewarding career. I also discussed family and financial hardship growing up, which allowed me to understand and handle making sacrifices.

For my Cornell supplemental essays, I wrote about a diverse range of things. I’d be happy to share my essays and PS as well as provide tips about the DVM and DVM/PhD application process to anyone interested! PM me :)

Very cool personal statement :). Being a wisconsin applicant that was also rejected, I think that the reason we were both probably rejected there was due to a lack of interest in dairy medicine? Just thought I would give you my input since you seem like an amazing candidate in all other aspects. And I might be trying to make myself feel better about being rejected as well :p. Best of luck to you wherever you end up going. :)

Hey there,

First off - CONGRATS on your successes. I am applying now for 2016 & could really use some amazing guidelines to help shape my PS a bit better - I read that you are willing to send yours. Could you please =)thank you so much for your time and help!

Best,
kk

I thought I'd post my stats since I just got in about a month ago and it might make some of you feel more hopeful about your chances. I'm also so amazed that I get to post here, was losing hope. :)

Older than 20's applicant, 3rd time applying

First Cycle: Applied: CSU IS, OSU, WSU

Declined all

I literally did the whole application in the 48 hours prior to the deadline. Was very interesting, a bit of a psychedelic expereince, wouldn't suggest it. I was really intimidated and didn't feel like I had a chance and kept being too scared to start my application until my back was against the wall.

2nd Cycle:

Applied: CSU, Midwestern

Waitlisted: CSU IS, Midwestern

Offered: CSU OS- I declined it

3rd Cycle:

Applied: CSU

Waitlisted: CSU

Offered: CSU OS spot on April 16th- declined offer
CSU IS spot August 24th at 5:04pm- gasped and accepted spot

Overall GPA Third Attempt: 3.4 (3.2 first cycle, 3.3 second cycle)
Science GPA: 3.2
Undergrad GPA 3.1
Undergrad Science GPA 2.7
Graduate Degree GPA: 3.8

GRE: (Q/V/W) First and second cycle: 390/610/4.5 (old format- if you don't know what these scores mean: Q is cringe-worthy embarrassing & as bad as you can get, V is good)
Third Cycle 150/161/4.5

Veterinary Expereince:
Volunteered for years all over the place, shelters, rehab, private practice etc. Lots of vet hours. Some hours working as a tech.

Research: Completed my own designed and executed research project
Also assisted on multiple other research projects. Some were fairly exotic and interesting.

Animal experience: Lots, wildlife, small animal, some food animal, equine, exotics.

Work: biologist, and lots of other things from vet receptionist to waitress.

Personal Statement:

I talked about which specific area of vet med I'm interested in and why. I presented a clear narrative of who I am, how I got here and what about my experiences has guided me to where I want to go. I clearly illustrated how my past reinforces my interest in exotic animal medicine and that the other experiences working or volunteering in vet clinics has shown me what being a veterinarian really means and that I realize what I'm getting into and that it isn't all roses and puppies. I honestly thought it was ok, but not great. I really struggled to put together a personal statement that I felt was true and didn't brag or misrepresent who I am.

Explanation Statement: I talked about some of the specific challenges that occurred in my undergrad, resulting in a few unfortunate semesters. I talked about how I've overcome these challenges and how I am a better person for having to overcome the challenges I overcame. I pointed out that my grad. GPA showed that I know how to succeed in higher education and that I can handle whatever comes my way and succeed.

I thought I was not getting in this year again, but then I did and it is so awesome and I'm so thankful, although vet school is a hella hard crazy ride!!

Hopefully this will inspire some of you who don't have stellar stats, but want it so bad. You can do it, it may not be easy or as quick as you like, but if you want this, go for it.

Hello there,

Can you PLEASE send me your essays and PS for cornell app! i would LOVEE to go there, I just attended a tour/presentation there & feel in love!! I am a NY resident applying now for 2016. THANK YOU so much for your time (sorry for all the caps its just that cornell excites me so much, it is my goal and I am super happy that I stumbled upon your post! You had mentioned that you were willing to send - I could really use some guidelines because I feel like I always want to edit my responses to improve them lol - driving myself bonkers)

Best,
kim
Sorry if I come across as a jerk, but I read the first few words of your message and the whole "send me your PS" caught my eye. I think you are more than capable of googling veterinary PS examples from Illinois, and Michigan which come up as the first results when you google. Second, the PS isn't meant to be THAT difficult- I'll admit, I found it daunting. I drafted several times a few that were very "me me me me me me" and "oh you should take me because I grew up with so much adversity :(((" when really, the best PS is just a story you about yourself that is veterinary related. It took me up until the VMCAS deadline to find a story I wanted to tell my audience and I'm so glad I waited because the story I told happened only days-weeks before the app was due. I shared my PS with the veterinarian I wrote it about- who is also a great friend of mine now, and a few other friends of mine. I can offer you the advice above, but I wouldn't want anyone modeling their PS after mine. It has to be your own or else the committees will see you as transparent and unoriginal and probably toss it. Again, just my opinion and advice.
