Hey y'all,
I recently got accepted to both SUNY Buffalo and GWU. I'm leaning towards Buffalo b/c of the price and that both schools are similarly rated. But Buffalo looks like a sucky place to live and study; I have always envisioned it as a a cold, dreary and boring place to live, as opposed to DC, which is a truly exhilirating city. Also, how diverse is SUNY Buffalo compared to GWU? Can anyone tell me anything about student life and the atmosphere of buffalo if it's different that I described? Yes, I know that I'll be going to medical school to study, but at the same time, I wish to be in good surroundings. Time is of the essence b/c I have ot reply to one school by the end of the day. Please share what you can. Thanks.

Hi I just read your thread and I thought I'd reply to you, even though this probably is coming too late and you've already made your decision.

I just finished my first year at Buffalo and I had a great time. Students are very friendly here for the most part. I think our school is pretty diverse, but I'm not really certain how it would compare to other schools. I have lived in Buffalo all my life and I went to undergrad here too. I wouldn't have stayed here another 4 years if I didn't truly love the city. Most Buffalonians have a lot of pride in their city, and people from out of town eventually grow to love it. The night life is great (especially the bars and the local music scene). Plus we have Niagara Falls (huge casinos) 30 minutes away. The weather here is not too bad. Winters are very cold and there is a lot of snow. But the summertime is gorgeous and the autumn leaf change is breathtaking.

I'm not sure if this helped much, but if you have any other questions just let me know. I'd be glad to help.

I also finished my first year at Buffalo.

Buffalo is a great city. I guess it can be a dreary city sometimes but Buffalo is fun and exciting.

Yes Buffalo will save you 50-100K over 4 years.
I also think the curriculm is better at Buffalo. Its more intergrated after talking with somebody from Georgetown.

I love my classmates and i know we have a lot of fun

Plus you got to love the theater. We have Toronto and a lot other things

Although this is a bit late, I'm a high school student living in the 'burbs of B-lo who is entering the GW 7 yr BA/MD program, so I might be able to give you somewhat of a comparison.

In terms of environment, Buffalo's Med school is on UB's South Campus, across from the VA Hospital and you don't get much of an urban feel from that area. In terms of the bars and nightlife stuff, that is farther into the city and not too close by. The Falls are close, but not a thing you will want to do very often later on. (Having been born and raised here, going to the falls has become more of a dreaded thing than something looked forward to). Toronto is 2 hours by car, awesome city but as to whether you will be able to go often is something you may want to consider.

With GW, you're in the heart of DC, the edge of campus is 4 blocks from the White House, etc. *The National Mall (Lincoln Mem, Washington Monument, etc.) is a good place to go for a date.* There is a much more urban feel, greater availability of nightlife, retaurants, etc. closer to campus.

With regard to commuting, at UB, I know of no housing within 4/5 blocks of Farber Hall, whereas at GW, many apts, immediately off campus are available. Yet, for 3/4 yr. rotations, you will likely need a car for both schools.

That's my 2 cents...
