Can someone explain to me how parking works at the school? When I interviewed there was an odd kind of meter you had to feed I imagine that students get parking passes how does that work and where do they park usually?

Students get parking passes. Lot 36 is the parking lot right next to the vet school but it can be hard to get a pass for sometimes, even for vet school students. There are two lots across the street, Lot 37 and 49. I'm in lot 49 and like it a lot. Parking registration is currently open until July so once you have a netID or UIN you should be able to register.

Does it work like a lottery system? Or is it like a first come first served thing?

It goes by seniority I think. Employees get first dibs, followed by vet students, grad students, and so on. It doesn't matter if you apply now or wait until July. They rank everyone after registration closes. If you don't get your first choice for parking, you'll get put on a wait list for that lot and given your second choice.

awesome thanks so much :)

Permits are NOT determined by when you sign up, as mentioned. It'll be based on a bunch of factors, but that is not one of them. We've been told to try for Lot 24 since it'll be right next to the new school. Lot 36 is still a good lot. There's also Lot 37, that's a bit farther of a walk. You should have information about it in the next packet that comes out in May or so.

I recently got a letter in the mail asking me to indicate whether I am interested in applying for the Health Professions Student Loan. In order to do so, I would have to log into the howdy portal. However, I have not received a NetID or password for this portal. Anyone else have this similar problem? I did not do my undergrad at A&M. Thanks guys!

I am in the same boat lol. My guess is the letter came from another department that is unaware of our lack of an ID.

When are going to get login info for the Howdy portal? I keep getting FAFSA notifications to sign into the Howdy portal to update FAFSA info.

I was already a student before starting vet school, so I'm not entirely sure what y'all have to do...I assume there might be information about NetID and Howdy and all that in the next packet that should be going out soon. I want to say I received mine around the 2nd week of May.

You should be receiving another package in the mail by the end of next week that has parking, UIN, howdy usernames and more.

this is from cvm student admissions office:)

Does anyone know how many students will be in c/o 2020? I wasn't sure if they decided to increase the class size this year...

Does anyone have recommendations on what to start reading for Veterinary school?

I was thinking of starting with anatomy, then physiology if I have time this summer.

I honestly don't have the money to take the anatomy summer course, but I'm interested in trying to get a little bit of foundation if possible.

If anyone could recommend a book or two that would give the best basic foundation in anatomy and/or physiology for someone who has never taken either cous in undergrad.

Thanks in advance.

Did anyone else out there attend the Texas A&M application debriefing last Friday (5/20)? I was extremely annoyed to learn that they had changed their admission criteria AFTER I applied and that my application was basically disqualified before it ever got to the AdCom. Just wondering if anyone else out there is in a similar boat.

I wasn't able to attend. What exactly did they say?

I do and I live 5 minutes away (by car :) ). None of the bus routes (at least this year, but I don't see this changing) go from off campus directly to the vet school. They go to main campus and then there's a bus from main campus to the vet school. Personally, I think parking on campus is very much worth it, but some people don't park on campus (I think that a big majority do though). It just gives me a lot more time and flexibility. Plus even though I live close some of the roads I would have to bike on wouldn't be the best haha.

how do you guys find a job at the small/large hospital as a student?
There's several ways to go about it. Sometimes they're listed on the A&M job site, others you'll be emailed about once your CVM emails are set up, and I think there's a vet school specific job page, but I can't remember what it was.

So honestly, I wouldn't read/study a ton this summer, just so your brain is really fresh in the fall. That being said, if you are careful and don't over do it, I think it may be beneficial, but everyone is different. Personally, I didn't do any reading over the summer, but I also took anatomy and physiology in undergrad and the courses were similarly set up so that did help. If you are going to study (again: DO NOT OVER DO IT :) have fun, hang out with friends, call your family, take up hobbies, etc. ) for anatomy I would just honestly jump straight in to Miller's guide to dissection of the dog. It's what you'll be using in class anyways, so you might as well familiarize yourself with the same material (assuming they're not changing the books for y'alls class). For phys however, I was brought up on Sherwood's physiology book, I love it, it was practically my baby in undergrad phys and for a while, apparently the vet school even used it. So, I wasn't exactly a fan of the Guyton and Hall book that was our "assigned reading" (I didn't ever read it once I realized it wasn't for me), but other people loved it. I didn't use Sherwood much in vet school, but when I did, it was very helpful. Some of the pictures in the slide sets were from there as well.

All that being said, try to relax this summer and don't stress too much about doing summer reading. It does have the potential to help, but you don't want to overdo it before you get here. :)

Hey everyone!

I have some dumb questions. Does anyone know how to access the breakdown of what loans we are eligible for personally? I set up all the stuff that was indicated in the packet they sent me. I'm just not sure where to look for that sort of information.

Thanks!

Also does anyone know when the survey for the MM program will be sent out? Because I am from out of state I am really interested in being part of it, and I dont want to miss an opportunity because I am computer challenged (;))

Thanks!

Not exactly sure what answer you're looking for. As professional students, we are eligible for federal direct unsubsidized loans up to $40,500 or the COA, whichever is cheaper. For A&M, that would be the latter. COA has been about $37-38K for the last 2 years. You could also be eligible for the HSPL or Loans for Disadvantaged Students. Whatever you've filled out will cover these loans and any scholarships. You should receive an e-mail (to your @tamu.edu account) about award package around mid-June. You'll be able to log-on to myfinancialaid.tamu.edu to see the breakdown and complete any required forms.

That helps! I realize that I should be covered in loans. I just want to make sure that my fasfa was processed and everything is in check. thank you.

I don't remember what it was called, but I'm sure if you search TAMU vet school jobs, you can find a lot of listings and possibly that site as well. It may have been through the agrilife extension or something, but I don't remember honestly. :)

I would ask this question on the Facebook page, but I think it was already sent out, but ask there to be sure. Posting on Facebook may give you a better chance of having our VP (who's in charge of it) seeing it and responding than on here. It may have been sent to your new CVM email account so check there too.

Any recommendations for a vet in CS you take your own pets to? Just for annual checkups, vaccines, etc...or do you use the teaching hospital?

Do students receive any discounts at the teaching hospital?

I don't have any pets here, but vet students do get discounts at the teaching hospital (I can't remember what the percentage is, I want to say between 15-20%, but someone correct me if that's wrong--whatever it is, I remember thinking it was good). They told us about it at orientation I think, but if you call and ask I'm sure they'd tell you, or you may be able to find it somewhere on their website. I haven't needed to look before, so I don't know if it's on there or not. :)

Awesome sauce! Thanks for the info...I have four fur-kids that I'm bringing

To all the current/former vet students out there,

What is physiology lab like? We just received our class schedules and it looks like phys is heavily weighted. I did not take anatomy or phys during undergrad.

Just trying to get an idea.

Thanks in advance!

Lab will reinforce topics covered in lecture. Some days you will be doing hands-on activities, other days you will just be watching/listening to a specialist or whoever the professor that is lecturing for that block of material. You will also have worksheets due nearly every week and a weekly quiz--neither of these are overly difficult. The only thing that sucks for the quizzes is that they are all or nothing. No partial credit. :\

Hey Guys!

I was going to register for parking today but I wanted to get everyone's input first. The page I received in the mail suggested requesting in this order: 24 36 37 71 and 100 is guaranteed. However, we get to have 6 choices on the registration. Also lot 71 is not a listed option. My new plan is to put it in this order: 24 36 37 (three additional lots) and then 100 since its garunteed. Does anyone know of any other lots that are semi close? I'm from way out of state so I have no idea what I am doing! Thanks everyone in advance!

I have heard from everyone that the Sherwood Introduction to Physiology is much better, but the Guyton and Hall is required for class.

Has anyone had any experience with either that they would be willing to share? Particularly, what did you think of Guyton and Hall in terms of readablilty, comprehension, organization, etc as compared to Sherwood?

Thank you in advance

As I mentioned a few posts earlier, I bought Guyton and Hall and frankly... I hated it. I used Sherwood in undergrad and LOVED it, so I used Sherwood the one or two times I needed to reference something, but I honestly didn't even use it really at all so if you don't have it, I wouldn't stress about it too much.

how busy is the first year? im thinking getting a part job 10-15 per week. should i do it or no? when i was in undergrad, ive always had a part time job and did fine
