Well, I guess it's time to start this up for next year! I haven't seen one up yet and I guess I will give it a shot, especially since I will be an Underdog myself! I will follow HockeyDr09's great lead from last year and post everyone's stats, interview invites, and acceptances on the front page as we go along.

I genuinely hope this can help those who need it just as the Underdog Thread did for me last year. After two years, I had a 3.1 cGPA and a 2.9sGPA. With the encouragement that thread gave, I was able to earn a 3.7 GPA in my junior year to raise both of my GPAs and still give myself a shot, depending on how my MCAT went.

Please consider your statistics before posting in the thread. Each person has their own definition of what an Underdog is or should be. However, posting that you think you are an Underdog with a 32+ MCAT and a 3.5+ GPA doesn't exactly qualify you as one, and doesn't help anyone who is going to really struggle to get in.

When posting statistics to share on this thread, please post as like this:
sdn name- cGPA, sGPA, MCAT
That way this year we can also ensure everyone can use both the cGPA and sGPA as a reference, as well as the MCAT.

*** Please do not post statistics until your GPA has been verified by AACOMAS and your MCAT scores are in. Until that happens, this can be purely discussion. This will keep me from continually having to go back, find names, and edit information.

If anyone else wants to contribute by making spreadsheets or anything of the like, feel free!

The Underdogs had great success last year and hopefully this year we can keep it up!

Best of luck to you all.
DJack

What is an underdog? Formula from last year's thread...
Formula:
MCAT/2 + sGPA*10 = Applicant Score

(The "sGPA" here is your science GPA)

The average applicant (according to the 2009 matriculant data: 25.49 MCAT, 3.25sGPA) will then have their "applicant score" as 45.25, as per the formula: (25.49/2) + (3.25*10) = 45.25

The average matriculant (according to the 2009 matriculant data: 26.19 MCAT, 3.35sGPA) will then have their "applicant score" as 46.60, as per the formula: (26.19/2) + (3.35*10) = 46.60

Keeping my fingers crossed! I am super nervous about my MCAT. I get my scores back in a couple weeks.. but I feel like it went awful. Having to retake it would really set me back, but we'll see!

Wishing you the best of luck! :luck:

Ah good luck!! I swear it's harder to wait for scores than take the actual test, everybody feels awful after it though so I wouldn't rely too much on post-exam feelings :) I'm retaking a low mcat this June bc it was the closest date I could get :/ hopefully I won't be too late in the cycle.

I know there's a lot of uncertainty and anxiety going into the application cycle, but try to keep your head up and be confident! Good luck everybody!

Finally a new underdog thread! Good luck everyone. I'll be in your shoes next year.

This is awesome. I might be joining in later, but if I do it will be late in the season. More than likely I'll wait until June 2012 to apply. Good luck though everybody!

+1. Thanks Djack. The Underdogs killed it last year, and even though I was just a "supporter" (come on, we all feel like underdogs doing into this mess) the thread was a huge inspiration. I hope that it can live on for years to come. HockyDoc did an amazing job last year, so you have some big shoes to fill Djack! Underdog Class of 2011 is rooting for you all!

This thread has the HockeyDr seal of approval.

To all the future underdogs,
You have a better chance than you think, just go out there and prove to the adcom's that you deserve to be there. Make sure your personality and desire come through through your personal statement (take your time on this, make sure it's as perfect as possible), and always try and improve. Be as proactive as possible. Get your application in early, and return those secondaries quickly. Contact schools and let them know you're interested. Just don't let anyone bring you down. :luck: to all.

Any tips for getting off waitlists :D

Good luck to everyone this year, PM me if you have any questions!

Good luck to everybody. No offense, but hopefully I will not have to be a member of the underdog thread after I get my retake MCAT scores back. Right now I'm sitting at 3.8 cGPA and 22 MCAT.

DJack, I don't know if you took the April 29th MCAT like I did, but I feel the same about my scores. Fingers crossed that we will be wrong and get great scores.

Why not have spread sheet like the 2010-2011 underdog thread ?

You're a dentist, offer some free dental work.

Good idea!:D One list even though I'm on the "high" list the number seems pretty far. The other list is random, so I'm holding out a bit more hope. On one hand I don't want the school to forget me, and on the other hand I don't want to call them without a good reason either.

I just want to tell every underdog that's applying this year good luck! There will most certainly be times when you get depressed and feel like giving up, but trust me (trust all of us who got in from last year's thread) it is definitely possible and completely worth everything you went through once you get accepted!!

I initially applied last year with a 3.5 cGPA, 3.3 sGPA, and only a 24 MCAT.

With the help and support of fellow underdogs, I managed to raise my GPA to a 3.65 cGPA and 3.5 sGPA and retook the MCAT and pulled off a 28 (9p/9v/10b).

I applied to 12 schools (10 DO and my 2 state MD schools). I received an interview invite from 9 out of the 10 DO schools and also from both MD schools. I was initially accepted to LMU-DCOM (which is an amazing institution btw) in October of last year even before my new MCAT scores were in. I knew I loved the school, really wanted to go there, and ended up withdrawing from all other DO schools after it was all said and done.

I didn't receive interview invites from my state schools until the end of March and April of this year, and to be honest, I had given up hope on them...I was packing my bags and getting excited about heading to DCOM.

Then just yesterday, I was miraculously accepted to one of my state schools (LSU-New Orleans) and I can't even begin to describe to you what an amazing feeling it was to read that letter!! If you would have told me that I was going to be matriculating there this time last year, I would have laughed and not even given it an ounce of consideration.

Basically, I just want to encourage all of you with mediocre stats who have been told by others that you really don't have a chance to NEVER give up hope! It is certainly possible, and dreams really can come true!!! :D

Yes I did take the 4/29 MCAT. Sucked. Not looking forward to the scores... PS was super chem heavy, which sucked because physics is one of my strengths. Lets just :xf: for good scores!

We will. I am talking to a few people about it. I will also be posting information from last year's thread to give even more info to this year's underdogs. HockeyDr will be sending me some info soon.

If any of you have any other ideas, feel free to let me know! We will start adding stats up in June when people begin getting verified and also begin applying.

thanks for the good luck wishes! we we so excited...

sorry for the awful reference but it's friday and i had to do it ;)

Friday, Friday, gotta get down on friday, everybody's looking forward to the weekend, weekend

I am also praying for planetary alignment... I'm taking the MCAT on 'Judgment day' so maybe I'll get a 45??? ;) Anyway, wishing everyone the best... We're the best of the bunch... we just have to get people to see it!

Good luck everyone! I was an underdog this past year but got in at PCSOM and I'm beyond happy. Keep your heads up and keep plugging along! I know you all will do great! Any Q's on anything hollar my way! I had a cGPA of 3.45 and a sGPA of 3.3 and mcat of 25 but I had good refs and from what I'm told interview extremely well. If anyone is looking into pcsom pm me!

So excited that I am about to start this process...cGPA 3.18, sGPA 3.3+. What minimum mcat score would make adcoms take a look at my application? Also, I am taking the mcat mid august...Will that be late?

You should try to get at least a 27 on your MCAT so you can kind of offset the GPA. Taking the MCAT in mid august puts you a little late with that GPA but if you submit your primary in June or July then you will already be verified and some schools will send out secondaries with MCAT pending. That way you can get some of the secondaries done and the ones that you don't receive yet, look up the essays and write them so you can send them out as soon as you receive them after the MCAT.

First time poster,

Applying for DO schools this time around too!!

Stats: sGPA 3.25; CGPA 3.35; MCAT: 27Q

Longshot, but really really want to get into western in Pomona,CA (15 min away from my house)

Also applying to Touro CA + NV, AZ DO schools, PCOM, Chicago, Western in Oregon...

Hope I get in somewhere! Best of luck to everyone!! :)

I want to tell you my story. Twelve years ago I had to withdraw from my classes due to complications with my first pregnancy. I decided about 2 years ago that I wanted to be a doctor. I returned to the school planning to pick up where I had left off. I only lacked 2 semesters to graduate. The problem was they no longer offered that degree. I was told I would need to start over. Most of my classes would not transfer. I met with several advisers. I told them what my goal was and they told me I was crazy. They even laughed at me. They said what I wanted to do was impossible. I couldn't become a doctor. So I transferred to a different school. I decided as long as I had to start over anyways I would be a premed major. The advisers at my new school weren't any more encouraging. I scheduled my mcat exam for last July. At the time I hadn't taken any ochem and only physics 1. I bought an old copy of an ochem book at a used book store and signed up for a mcat study class. I studied hard and with a lot of help from the man up stairs I scored a 26M. Since returning to school I have had strait A's. My gpa is 3.67 and sgpa is 3.9. I applied late in the cycle. I received 3 interview invites. Two MD in state and one DO. I was rejected from the MD in state’s and waitlisted at the DO school.

I feel like an underdog because I applied this cycle with no degree. I was told the whole way through by everyone I talked to that I couldn't do it. I shouldn't waste my time and money. I found out last week that I was accepted! I will be a medical student, class of 2015!! Don't let anyone tell you, you can’t do it. Dream big!! Work hard! Keep the faith! Good luck to each of you in your quest to follow your dreams!!

WOW! That's an awesome story doctor mom! It just goes to show you, a little determination, perseverance, and maybe even a little divine intervention can make what some say is impossible, possible.

I'm very happy how things have turned out for you and wish you the best of luck at DCOM! I absolutely loved everything about that school.

doctor mom and vmorel1, you guys are my new heroes. Good luck with everything!:)

You should really consider retaking that mcat score. Your app seems very competitive even for MD schools.

Since I will be an undergod next cycle I was wondering how many if any retakes you guys had? I am going to have 5-6 by the time I apply and I just wanted to see were I stood.

I have similar stats, but haven't narrowed down the list of schools at all... I will be applying super broadly to everything that I have a smidge of a chance at.

Starting up Excel right now to create OCD comparative DO school spreadsheet. ;)

PM me the spreadsheet when you're done if you dont mind :-D

I've seen alot of people get in with worse GPA's/MCAT score combinations into a few of those schools. I don't know too much about alot of the other schools, maybe i'll apply to those too, but applying can be expensive!! :(

3.74 gpa. 24 mcat!!! Sucks it worked out like that lol damn 6 in verbal :( I am retaking in July though. Ill be submitting my app in June and indicating I plan to retake.

Hello 2011-2012 underdogs, 2010-2011 underdog here!

I just wanted to tell all of you to keep at it, don't give up. This process you are about to begin is geared toward, and favors those who are undaunted and confident. That can be hard to do as an underdog, but I really believe that if you can pull it off as an underdog, you are a force to be reckoned with.

I applied late this past cycle, no primaries till October. With my underdog GPA I already had the deck stacked against me, or so most would have me believe. I took my MCAT in September and did well so that helped some.

I refused to lose; call it tenacity or blind ambition, maybe even call it delusion. Either way, I got a couple of quick rejections from schools I wasn't really that interested in in the first place, no big deal, I wasn't too torn up about it. Then in February I got invited to interview at the school I had designated as my top choice. Words can't describe the feeling. I got the invite on a Friday, and elected to interview 7 days later. I went from getting no love and making other plans, to frantically buying a new suit and booking a flight, to having completed an interview within 7 days. 5 days after my interview, I got another invite for my #2 school. Later that afternoon I got the acceptance notice from my #1 so I declined it.

I may have had the most significantly underdogged GPA in the thread this last cycle. But I was determined, and remained undeterred about giving it a shot. I knew I belonged, I knew that my GPA was the only thing that didn't scream out that I should be a doctor. And I knew that if I could just get an interview, I would be accepted. In the end, that's exactly how it turned out.

When I got the word from my school that I'd been accepted, they even went as far as to tell me that during the committee meeting they didn't even have to discuss admitting me. They told me it was a consensus that I would be an excellent fit for thier school, and that I was just what they were looking for. Not sure if they tell everyone that to butter them up or not, but considering my underdog stats, it felt GREAT!

I like the idea of creating a spreadsheet for people to use as a guide to applying. But please bear in mind that regardless of stats (as long as you meet the minimum), if you've truly got what it takes (and can show it in writing and past actions) you'll get a fair shake everywhere you apply. It'd be more efficient to decide what each school values in an applicant. You'll get way more mileage from a thorough evaluation of you personal strengths and experiences, and what you can offer a school; then using that info to find schools that are looking for that.

Stay positive, don't give up, and don't get discouraged. If I can do this, then certainly you can do this.

I caved and threw my MDapps back up as a reference for anyone interested. I took it down because I hated looking at how badly my stats sucked , oh well, hopefully it will help some people out. I added some of my EC's but I left out the descriptions. If enough people wind up asking i'll take the time and throw up descriptions, but i'll leave it as is for now.

Nice job getting accepted to your top choice! Good luck to all the underdogs this year.

Hi everyone,

I graduated with a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology this May and will be applying to DO schools in the next few weeks. I didn't even consider going to medical school until summer 2010 so I'm hoping my lack of direction earlier in my college career (and resulting grades) won't hurt me too bad during the application process.

My stats are:

January MCAT = Q writing - 11 VR - 10 Bio - 7 PS, I retook the MCAT on 4/29 to bring up my PS score and am still waiting for the scores to be released.

cGPA - 3.03 (EDIT)
sGPA - 3.08 (EDIT)

I have about 250 volunteer hours working with patients in the ER of a local hospital and I was a college athlete.

Wish me luck!

Hi everyone,

I graduated with a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology this May and will be applying to DO schools in the next few weeks. Nice MCAT score nevertheless :)
Good luck!

I have 3.24 sGPA, 3.29cGPA, MCAT 33M.
The only marginally meaningful EC I have during undergrad is a 4 month volunteering in a research lab in summer 2007.
In a situation like this, is it wise to first find some EC to do, or is early application still the key?

I say apply early, while finding a clinical volunteer thing to do (preferably something at the ER). That way you can put on your application that you are currently doing something. Your stats, numbers wise, are awesome so all you need is a little bump in the EC department.

I wouldn't be surprised if you received multiple interview invites with your application as is fwiw. Good luck! :luck:

If you were set on applying to DO, you should have not retaking the MCAT; a 28 mcat is good for DO. You would be better off in working on your GPAs. Though, I think your chances are good for DO with your current stats.

Your GPA is low, but your MCAT is solid. I think if you apply early, you will be fine. Best of luck!

Personally, I wouldn't even consider you an underdog! A 33 is a great score man. Not having ECs will hurt some, but I still think you will be looking at multiple interviews and acceptances (assuming you interview well!)

You two ARE getting in. If you need any advice on your personal statements or anything else, feel free to let me know.

Thank you very much! You have been a great help thus far.

That goes for me also.

Thanks VeeTeeHokies!
