Welcome to the 2012-2013 Underdog Thread!

Looking for the underdogs list? See the next post or click here on this text.

It will be yellowperil that will be in charge of keeping the scores updated. Please contact him if you have questions regarding the list or wish to be added.

Please follow proper procedure by giving your SDN name, cGPA, sGPA and MCAT. If no MCAT, please write TBD. There's also an MDApplicants.com project going on this year for all D.O. applying students.

The underdog section of the MDapp: DO List is pretty bare, and there's much more to an applicant than cGPA/sGPA/MCAT and underdogs know this best! Get a MDapp profile, edit it with your application story: tell of your LOR's, your EC's, and make a timeline of your progress, and post it to the comprehensive MDapplicants: DO List.

Here's some data that may be useful when applying:

"Please consider your statistics before posting in the thread. Each person has their own definition of what an Underdog is or should be. However, posting that you think you are an Underdog with a 32+ MCAT and a 3.5+ GPA doesn't exactly qualify you as one, and doesn't help anyone who is going to really struggle to get in.

When posting statistics to share on this thread, please post as like this:
sdn name- cGPA, sGPA, MCAT
That way this year we can also ensure everyone can use both the cGPA and sGPA as a reference, as well as the MCAT.

The Underdogs had great success last year and hopefully this year we can keep it up!

Last year's Underdog Thread: http://forums.sdn.net/showthread.php?t=820171
2010-2011 thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=736438
What is an underdog? Formula from last year's thread...
Formula:
MCAT/2 + sGPA*10 = Applicant Score

The science GPA of an average applicant
The average applicant (according to the 2011 applicant data: 25.66 MCAT, 3.26sGPA) will then have their "applicant score" as 45.43, as per the formula: (25.66/2) + (3.26*10) = 45.43

The overall GPA of an average applicant
The average applicant (according to the 2011 applicant data: 25.66 MCAT, 3.41 overall GPA) will then have their "applicant score" as 46.93, as per the formula: (25.66/2) + (3.41*10) = 46.93

The science GPA of an average matriculant
The average matriculant (according to the 2011 matriculant data: 26.51 MCAT, 3.36sGPA) will then have their "applicant"score" as 46.855, as per the formula: (26.51/2) + (3.36*10) = 46.855

The overall GPA of an average matriculant
The average matriculant (according to the 2011 matriculant data: 26.51 MCAT, 3.48 overall GPA) will then have their "applicant"score" as 48.055, as per the formula: (26.51/2) + (3.48*10) =48.055

Well it has already been made :) Hopefully tomorrow I will be a 3.22sGPA/33+MCAT applicant. One year ago today I was a 2.65sGPA/28MCAT applicant (though I didn't actually apply 1 year ago).

it's kind of funny to think that i would have been an average~above average applicant 3 years ago.

sigh

i'll go back to crying myself to sleep now.

What happened in the last 3 years that hurt your application?

I'm going to start this just to make sure it goes correctly. Whoever goes next feel free to delete my name/stats since I apparently don't qualify as an underdog even though I feel like one.

I think this needs a revision. We can't say sGPA alone is what matters for admissions. We need to account for cGPA too.

Nur I think you're above average.... Average is like what? (3.45 cgpa, 3.3 Sgpa, 26.5 mcat).

Mfas you need to live in the mcat prep forum. I don't think you'll be accepted with anything less than a 30. But you're a true underdog here, I wish you luck.

yellowperil, you would need to continue updating the front page of this thread with the stats that people are posting. Wish everyone good luck!
Reason: Edit: oops sorry, just noticed you are already doing that.my bad

Dr.Willy from last cycle also had less than 3.0 GPA, but got an above 30 score and managed to get multiple interviews and acceptance. Good luck on your MCAT!

cGPA: 3.20
sGPA: 3.20
MCAT: TBD (June 21st)

These numbers are with one retake. : /

Crazy to think by this time next year my sgpa will be 3.5+ (if everything goes to plan)

Good luck everyone.

Crazy to think that the underdog threads are now moving on to the 3rd year. Look what we started...

Anyway, good luck to this years applicants.

3.15 cGPA, 3.28 sGPA, TBD July 6. I am truly an underdog

Thanks... I look above average, but that sGPA includes a bunch of retakes and w's, and not the strongest upward trend in the world.

29 on the mcat will doubtingly compensate for a rocky start/past. Either way I have no doubt that you will be able to get into a mid level DO school like LMU or LECOM and probably have a decent shot at the top tier.

Yeah he rocked it like a mf-ing boss. Serenade are you applying this cycle?

I was going to, but I think I'm going to give myself more time on the Mcat ( Doing the 120 Day method starting June 1st ) and take a gap year instead. Hopefully in the meantime I can abuse my university into letting me take unrestrictive amounts of graduate level biology and neuroscience courses to prep me for MS-1.

I took a gap year (not by choice) and took some graduate level physiology classes and such. My university didn't have an issue and adcoms liked it. When are you planning on taking the MCAT

Underdogs often get the best mcat scores; we know what it's like being on the bottom so we become motivated to hit the top.

The mcat forum is typically people with underdog gpas working their balls off to make their mcat amazing enough to compensate for their gpa.

Were all going to rock the mcat guys, and seriously once I walk through the doors to med school my days of being lazy/underdog in my class are def over.

I wouldn't say that underdogs are lazy... thats what gives people the wrong impression and underdogs a bad name.

not saying the underdogs are lazy. Im saying I was lazy. Thats why I became an underdog due to my own reluctance to work hard.

I think underdogs are the ones that often work the hardest. Ive spent over 500 hours studying for the mcat.

I'm thinking September or maybe October. And yah, I don't know the biology department at my university is really odd, mostly because I feel like our courses are split up between the medical school campus, NIH graduate training, and IBBR training. But yah, hopefully I can at least get embryology and histology out of the way. And hopefully undergraduate pathogenic microbiology and immunology will be decent prep.

Underdogs on SDN often get high Mcat scores.

I feel special for being mentioned in this thread already lol My MCAT really did save my ass. I got into a school that people believe add more weight to the MCAT over GPA (I believe it)

Good Luck guys. Best advice is to have all your stuff together and ready to go EARLY. It really does help when you are an underdog.

I really like this formula for underdog calculation since it incorporates both cGPA and sGPA.

How about this as the general applicant formula:

cGPA * 10 + sGPA *10 + MCAT = applicant score

3.43 * 10 + 3.33 * 10 + 25.66 = 93.3 average applicant

3.49 * 10 + 3.41 * 10 + 26.48 = 95.5 average matriculant

This is based on the observation that osteopathic schools seem be more holistic when evaluating applicants and a little less concerned with numbers, specifically MCAT scores, than their allopathic counterparts. This is shown by the larger percentile difference in MCAT scores (26.5 vs. 31.1) than GPA (3.49 vs. 3.67) It places equal weighting between science GPA, cumulative GPA and MCAT score.

The following modification will be made to account for students who have a graduate degree in the natural sciences or have done a postbacc with 24 or more credit hours completed (one year full time) to account for the weighting of recent coursework in returning students.

(cGPA + grad cGPA) * 5 + (sGPA + grad sGPA)*5 + MCAT = graduate student applicant score

(cGPA + postbacc cGPA) * 5 + (sGPA + postbacc sGPA)*5 + MCAT = post bacc student applicant score

To determine the criteria for an underdog we can utilize the 10th /90th percentile rule from the MSAR and apply it as +/- 1 std deviation, or the 16th / 84th percentile to keep the calculations simple. So the true underdog would have at least one of the three academic categories below the 16th percentile with the other two average or below as well. By using the cGPAas the statistical outlier, and probably the most common one for successful underdogs, we come up with the following score for an underdog:

(3.49 - .26) * 10 + 3.41 * 10 + 26.48 = 92.9 underdog threshold

(3.49 - .26) * 10 + (3.41 - .30) * 10 + (26.48 - 3.14) = 86.7 long shot

However, outliers cause issues. A 3.6 cGPA, 3.5 sGPA with an 22 on the MCAT will be a underdog, but according to a simple formula it will compute as a competitive score. To combat this we will add several modifiers to compensate for people with unbalanced stats.

-1 point MCAT overall 24
-2 points MCAT overall 23
-3 points MCAT overall 22
-1.5 points Every section on the MCAT that scores a 7
-3 points Every section on the MCAT that scores a 6
-1 point cGPA 3.00-3.19
-3 points cGPA 2.85 - 2.99
-5 points cGPA 2.75 - 2.84
-1 point sGPA 3.00-3.09
-3 points sGPA 2.85 - 2.99
-5 points sGPA 2.75 - 2.84

Additional factors:
MCAT overall scores < 22 will be screened out by nearly every school and will not be rated
MCAT sectional scores < 6 will be screened out by nearly every school and will not be rated
cGPA or sGPA < 2.75 will be screened out by nearly every school and will not be rated

Finally, there is a large difference in the admission statistics between osteopathic schools, DMU has an average matriculant score over 100 while Pikeville is around 91. So a 3.2/3.1 with a 24 MCAT may be a big problem at one school and just fine at another.

QUESTION:
how are you guys calculating your sGPA and cuGPA? did you guys use this calculator http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=839864
Don't even bother with those at this point. Go into the application and fill it out. It will give you the cGPA and sGPA. For some reason, one of the spreadsheets gave me .05 less than the AACOMAS. I went crazy for like 3 hours trying to see if I made a mistake, but apparently I did not.

So if i just fill out all the coursework section of the AACOMAS application, it will immediately show me my calculated GPA?
The reason i wasn't sure if this was true because i see people on SDN always asking how they can see their GPA on AACOMAS...do you think they are referring to their verified GPA?

I used this calculator and it was pretty spot on as long as you remember to convert quarter to semester (if you were on quarter system) and to really understand which classes count towards sGPA and which don't. Hint: look at the AACOMAS instruction booklet.

Not sure if I'm allowed to join..
cGPA 3.47
sGPA 3.53
(based off calculations)

MCAT TBD(May 19 and will probably take again since I'm not hitting my goal)
